    Default Lost Voice, help!

My voice started to go on Sat, Feb 2. (I was helping my SO move into his new place) and through that week it was just slightly different than normal, but nothing really significant. But by the following Thursday, it was totally sexy-hoarse. I was busy joking around that I could do phone sex now because I had the voice down. Now, it's been deteriorating for over 3 weeks, and it's at a SERIOUSLY hoarse whisper, cracking all of the time when I can produce real sound.

what could be causing this, i dont know, but it's not smoke, or cold air (i bundle up outside and dont smoke and am never around it). i may have lost it originally from yelling (in a loud gym it's often hard to be heard as coach)

FTR, I'm not sick! I have no other sick symptoms, although i've been around sick ppl recently, I haven't been sick per se, just a loss of voice.

I have an appt to see a doc, but it's not until monday.

What can i do? I've been drinking throat coat tea. I've seen my acupuncturist 2x but nothing seems to be working. HELP!!

    Love it!

Have you given yourself a real break from speaking at all? Believe it or not, whispering is harder on the throat than speaking (forgot where I read/heard that).

You might have strained your vocal cords while yelling and need to give them a rest. Feel better!

yeah, i have been avoiding whispering. actually this happened years back and a doctor told me that, no singing, no whispering. today i went to blockbuster and the guy was asking me questions, of course i couldnt answer. finally i wrote out, "i lost my voice, can i pay now pls?" lol. guyess it pays to carry that mini notepad and pen in my purse haha.

    Love it!

Ha-when I lost my voice for a week or so, people kept trying to talk to me. And then got offended when I had to point ot my throat and shake my head. Figures the ONE week Jerseyans get nice, I have no voice. Just don't talk at all. It's annoying because people will ask 'oh did you lose your voice?', expecting you to reply. Also, the yoga lion pose (where you stick your tongue out) might help a little. But mostly rest!

Gargling with warm salt water has always helped for me, along with resting my voice as much as possible.

Hot compresses on you chest and throat always help me. It's extra good if you soak the cloths in hot tea. As soon as it starts to cool, remove it, a wet cloth is so counterproductive.

you could also maybe get a heat pack.

That is so strange! I don't have any advice, just want to say I hope you feel better.

I've worked with singers in the past (operas/musicals) who would over-do it before the show and the only cure was either a steroid shot in the ass or complete voice rest. Since your ass is probably too cute to poke with sharp things, I suggest voice rest.

Don't talk at all for a few days if you can avoid it. Even if you have to write stuff down. It's a miracle. I had a voice teacher who went on voice rest for an entire year to avoid surgery on her vocal chords that would have resulted in permanent scarring and changes to her voice. It worked. If she could do it for a year, you could do it for a few days.

Just type A LOT on here.

Viral laryngitis is making the rounds, I've noticed. I second the voice rest.

Try some zinc lozenges. Taste like crap but really effective for soar throats and laryngitis.

Maybe you had a sleeper virus?
