    Default knee problem...please help

Hey everyone. I have been dancing for about six months now. I have had on and off knee problems since I began dancing. When I first had trouble with my knees, I just did less floorwork and they improved. Recently I began doing more floorwork again since I thought that they were okay. Now I have a bump on the inside part of my left knee. It is a bit to the right of my kneecap. It feels like the bone is swollen or something, idk though. Its not very big, but it worries me. My question is; how do you know if its water-on-the-knee or if it is just swollen and inflammed? I don't really want to go to the doctor since I do not have insurance. Also, do you ladies experience pain in your knees? Mine are always sore whenever I'm not working but they feel fine when I am at work and wearing those stilletos. I have no idea why.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm thats odd. Im sorry I dont really know what to tell you but to slow down w/ the floor work again and see if it gets better again. maybe ice your knees every time after you work to help prevent any inflamation after stressing them.

if it doesnt get better, you will need to see a dr you're young you dont want fucked up knees when youre old.

I have no idea what that is. I've had tendonitis in both knees, but that doesn't involve any bumps. Try taking aspirin before work and icing it after. With my knees I would also use heat on them before dancing, but I'm pretty sure it's a different problem so I can't suggest that.

Do some searching on the internet if there is no way you can see a doctor. Try http://www.webmd.com

ok, so are you stretching before work? if not, you need to do this!!!

second, this can depend on the kind of shoes you're wearing in and out of work. i have to wear closed toe shoes and put memory foam insoles in them. out of work, i wear flat, sturdy shoes with insoles or sneakers.

not sure what type of floorwork you're doing, but it sounds like you're rolling on your knees. are you? if so, stop! i cant do this move anyways. do you stop or jump alot at work? if so, that impact is bad.

try taking aleve before work instead of advil.

do you run? if so, the impact can mess your knees up. try the elliptical or a bike instead.

how many days a week are you working in a row? i myself need to take a 'day off' because of my physical condition and have a limit as to how may days in a row i can work without severe pain.

does the swollen part feel hot to the touch? have you kept a record of when it acts up? how long does it last? is the bump hard like bone or squishy?

Sounds to me like you might have torn a ligament, possibly the medial collateral ligament, one of the ligaments that stabilizes the joint. Does your joint feel unstable, as though your knee might buckle under you? Can you bend your knee without pain?

The knee is a rather flimsy joint. It's called a hinge joint because the knee is only meant to bend back and forth in one direction. If you force your knee joint to bend very far in any other direction, you will gradually stretch and weaken the ligament tissue, and after a while the weakened tissue will often tear.

Don't ignore knee pain. It is a serious problem. Ligament tissue is VERY slow to heal and unlike muscle tissue, it will not contract once it is stretched, so that if you weaken the ligaments in your knee they will stay weak for the rest of your life.

If at all possible, you need to rest until your knee heals. Depending on how much the ligament is torn, you may need to rest for as much as 3-4 weeks.

You need to figure out what movements are stressing your knee and stop doing them. Common knee-stressing actions I see dancers doing are putting too much pressure on the knee during floorwork, spinning backwards around the pole with the pole pressing into the back of the knee, and getting up and down off the floor incorrectly with their weight too far forward -- when standing up from a squat, always press your weight into your heels and use the strength of your thighs and hips.

There's a great sequence for healing knees in one of my yoga books. If you're interested, I'll PM it to you. I also wrote a little article on stripper yoga in my blog, if you want to check it out: http://graceundressed.blogspot.com/2...or-skanks.html

can you not go on stage? you can tip the dj, or work it out with the mgt. i 've been on stage i think 3 times last year, and i'm making more money that way. also, always take your shoes off for dances and cr's (helps if you have slip off shoes) that wont fix your knee problems, but it might prevent new ones. my body's been thanking me since these changes
These days I like to count my money. I like to wash it delicately and iron it. Sometimes I dry it with some bounty to make it all nice and cuddly. I love my money... did I say that out loud?

You aren't kidding! I got my knee ripped sideways in a head on motorcycle wreck, it tore both outside ligaments in half. They did great surgery but it also fucked with the anterior cruciate ligament inside and it wasn't worth going in there to mess with it. As a result of that and a stretched nerve so I can barely lift my left foot, it is a serious impairment as far as trying anything radical with the left leg. I still limp a bit if I am drunk or tired

Knee pain is the most severe imaginable if something really goes wrong--be very careful!!

The best thing you could do, other than stretch it carefully, etc., is to get a pair of thigh high boots, and wrap the hell out of the knee using sports tape, just like football players use, you can go online to see ways to wrap it, but you need to use diagonal criss-crossing methods. Do that and you will have a bionic knee that can take almost anything.

Fuck ace bandages or those stupid light weight velcro knee braces, I have tried everything, and if I think I am going to have to stress that knee in any serious way i wrap it and never had a problem.

Oh be sure to shave your legs first, even tiny hairs can hurt like hell when you remove the tape (slowly!). You can also get underwrap to protect the skin, put it on first.

Thigh highs might be an expense, buy good ones not the cheap 60$ ones that will break in a week, but if you use this method it's better than being out of work with a busted knee!

ALL great advice and I thought to add just one more...

Supplements helped me A LOT when I was dancing, silica, glucosamine and chondroitin. Joint support. Helps with cartilage etc.

I really noticed if I forgot to take my supplements for a time, so I really was religious on taking them.

I have bad knees from years of floorwork. If you can, go see a doc to rule out anything severe then take the advice of the PP's (stretching, ice, etc).

I also take Emergen-C for Joint Health 2 times per day. Get it at Target or Walmart for around ten bucks. Ups my immune system and has glucosamine and condriton (sp) in it as well ~ both are known to protect and lubricate joints. It does make a difference!

My man is a hardcore soccer player, but he messed his knees up pretty badly a few years ago. A stripper/nurse co-worker of mine suggested Osteo Bi Flex, and he's been using it ever since. He tells me there's minimal to no pain, and tons more flexibility. Even when his knee 'pops' when he's playing, he says it doesn't hurt. Not that it's okay to work your leg to the bone because you can't feel it, but it's nice to know you can do something about the pain. The words he used were "cushion" and "comfort" so I don't think it's numbing you or anything like that. Here's a website, the supplement can be bought at any drugstore, we get his at Wal-Mart..

Start using a thick comfy blanket for floor work. If you can wear a tensor wrap on your knee and thigh high boots to cover it.

I started to have some serious knee issues and I ignored them thinking it was no biggie, well it got way worse and I had to have minor surgery on my knee.

Take care of it and don't ignore it!!

Also as Leigh suggested start taking supplements.

What is a tensor wrap? Something new I haven't heard about, maybe?

If there's something easier than tape I'd be interested, I might wear it to work on busy nights. I mean I have gotten pretty quick about taping, it's not a big deal--but then you have to take it off carefully, buy more rolls of tape, whatever.

I did have one velcro thing that wasn't too bad, if nowhere as good as tape. The Ace bandages are better than nothing, but basically worthless compared to better things.

hey babe! I'm wondering how high your shoes are? Bad knees run in my family, and I found that they started to act up when I was consistently wearing 7 inchers to work. I rested for about a week and a half, then when I went back to work I wore 6 inchers and occasionally 5ers and took it easy onstage. My knees haven't acted up since, so maybe you could try decreasing the height? Less pressure on them, or something. Anyhow, good luck and I hope they feel better!

Its either this or more likely the meniscus is torn. If it were a ligament, you would have weakness in the knee. With a torn meniscus, the knee is still strong but it tends to lock and be sore. The reason why it doesnt hurt as much with the high heels is the angle your knee is at when you are working.

It probably will require surgery to remove the tear and fix it though. The surgery can be done laproscopically.

I agree with pornlaw. I have had two knee surgeries on the same knee. I was a torn medial meniscus(inside of the knee). I hurt all the time, would swell something TERRIBLE. It got so bad that I could not walk. Get it checked out if you can and as soon as you can. The surgery was about $10.000 mabye a bit more. My advise would be to get insurance and get it checked out. There are several websites that compare private insurance and breaks down all the figures, deductables, and what is covered. Good luck.
