Default Swimming or Kickboxing...which will make me HOTTER faster?

I'm guessing kickboxing would be better but I am a bit intimidated, I have been pretty sedentary for the past few months. I also don't want to be gawked at by sweaty men while working out, that is why I hate the gym. I don't know how common all women kickboxing classes are.

I love the pool, but the only move I can do properly is the backstroke. I'll have to actually learn how to swim freestyle before the 'workout' part can start...

    Any kickboxers among us?

I do boxing, though not of the kick variety, and it worked very quickly for me.

I do regular martial arts classes, and I also occasionally teach cardio kickboxing. Nothing will kick your ass into shape faster.

For women's only classes, your best bet would be to check your local karate schools; many offer women only classes on certain days.

If that doesn't work, some gyms will have them, or try an all-women gym like Lucille Roberts for classes.

I too HATE the gym and never go for the same reason , plus I just find the thought of it distracting . Anyhoo , I have seen amazing results from Turbo Jam . I am sure you have seen the infommericals . In the video there is Kick boxing , martial arts , cardio , abs , weights ...u name it . I have even followed their diet plan and lost weight , about 5lbs a week . They have these little gloves that help with resistance that you HAVE TO GET !! I saw a 2 pack and major obliques after a couple of days , no joke . The downside for me is that its kinda hard to get through , not to follow but to finish . I get winded and are just about near death 3/4 of the way through the 20 mins cardio jam ....so yeah , its works though and it has this slimming effect , I never like those bulky muscle so I was worried but I am getting sleek muscles with this work out ........let me know if you need more info or if you get it. .....maybe you have it and hate it , I dunno
Visit me on myspace , Let me know if your from SW !!!!

What city do you live in?

AZ, CA, NV, NY and a few more states have LA Boxing which is great its boxing and kickboxing classes that are offered a few times a day. The membership is a little more than a real gym (about $70 a month) but it really kicked me into shape. I went to the one in Las Vegas for a while and it was great. I also tried one in LA..

A good kickboxing class will be kicking everybody's ass soooo hard, no one will have time or energy to gawk.

If you want a real kickboxing class, not just a cardiokickboxing type of class, check out www.ikfkickboxing.com for a list of reputable gyms.

Thanks everyone- I considering doing the cardio-type first for a month to get my body acclimated then go ahead with the real kickboxing.

Sindi- I will check out the TurboJam, I love working out at home.

I will check out those links for those gyms.

I LOVE kickboxing!!! I hate the gym, I found my kickboxing class was not sceney, just ppl that wanted to do kickboxing. They might have perved but if so it was discreet. But I'm sure all places are different. I was totally unfit when I started, I vomited halfway thru my first class, nice huh?
But it does awesome things to your body and self confidence. Highly recommend it!!

I have mixed feelings about this. I do martial arts...a muay thai based defense system. My body responds great..but in DIFFERENT ways I get hot swimming. In fact ever since I moved I haven't been doing laps and I see a difference in my body. Swimming tends to "slim" for some reason. Usually I don't believe in the whole..working one part helps...I believe in working the body as a whole. Swimming does something for me that kickboxing can't, and vice versa. Try both for a month and see where you get! Also a GREAT workout is Bas Rutten's tapes. They are fantastic...they want you to have a bag for it, but you don't NEED one...however results are faster if you have one.

I definitely not trying to slim down whatsoever. I eat a steady diet of pasta and bread with fruits and veggies thrown in just 'cause I have to. Not to mention the death-by-chocolate cupcakes I eat when I am not feeling my best.

I want to have a tighter/more toned look, be stronger, etc. Not interested in weight loss.

Here is an example of a body I like...She is a triathlete so I'm not going to get as firm as she is- but close to it will be fine.

But doesn't kickboxing work lower and upper body? I thought just plain boxing was mostly upper body.

I have taken a swimming class in the past- and as much as I loved it I had a terrible time trying to tread water. I still can't do it. Thankfully I'm almost 6ft so I would just sink to the bottom and push back up to the top.

CK- yeah I'm gonna wear a swim cap. I'm about to get micros before I start . It's hell pulling that cap over braids but it can be done. I don't want to have to wash chlorine out my hair all the time.

Boxing is a full body workout thanks to the form used (the waist is twisted during most punches and foot sequences are also used).

PV, I would vote for kickboxing then. And don't be surprised if you COULD look like that. Bodies can do stranger things. Kickboxing just FEELS more muscularly demanding. To me that is. I think you'd have better luck with that.

No offense or anything, and I'm not trying to be abitch but there is NOT a healthy way for you to look like her w/o changing that nasty diet, lol!

If you want a good toned healthy body, you have to eat good healthy food.

Oh and to answer your question, MMA hands down.

I train in a MMA gym and I don't worry about guys gawking at me, Scott, Dave and Turner are keeping us all WAY to busy to worry about gawking, lol!

I love kick boxing that's why I preferred it over swimming. But I recommend Pilates for body toning.

Oh no! That will be the hard part....even harder than excercise.

You get used to it babe, seriously!

Start the new diet slowly, and add good food gradually, while you are taking away bad food gradually, lol.

But 3 weeks into it, you won't have any bad food left in your house, and you won't crave it as much, and honestly I start getting sicker than a DOG if I have non-healthy food, lol!

Lots of fresh fruits and veggies, lean meats and lots of water.

Personally, I think kickboxing is the best. I do a workout that is intended for MMA fighters (the UFC guys) every day that I can. The first go around, I lost 40 pounds in roughly 3 months doing this workout, combined with a low carb diet. The great part about it is that you don't need weights (unless you want to do dumbell curls) of any kind. It's a combination of shadowboxing, lunges, squats, situps, pushups (I use the Perfect Pushups to really strengthen my core), bridges, and mountain climbers, and it takes about 30 minutes to complete. Very tiring, and very worth it. The routine is done by a guy named Bas Rutten, who's a former fighting champion. You can get the whole collection at:

    http://www.basrutten.tv/mm5/merchant...tegory_Code=DV

If you don't feel like buying it, I can make a copy or two if you want.

The DVD is actually just instructional, so you know what to do when he calls out the combos (i.e. "4" is a jab, right straight, left hook, right hook combination); basically meant so that you maintain proper form. Each CD has 2 tracks, and I put them on my iPod so that I can vary the workout when I get my body back into the rhythm. Right now, I do track one of the all-around workout CD, followed by track one of the Thai boxing CD (the easiest of the boxing CDs). I actually hit the heavy bag for the boxing CD, because it burns more energy, is tons more tiring than shadowboxing.
