Default Fake Nails - A Question

I've been thinking about getting french tips on my nails for a while now. I've tried doing it with polish, and while it turned out nicely, no polish will stick to my nails after a shower, doesn't matter how long they've been try. I've tried the cheap shit, the expensive shit, etc but nothing sticks. So I was thinking about getting my nails done. however, is there a way I can get french tips without ruining my natural nail? I know some methods absolutely DESTROY your natural nail, and I'm looking to avoid that. Help?

You don't have to get fake nails to get a french manicure. But if you want to go fake, gel nails are better than acrylic.

I don't understand why your nail polish won't stay on during a shower. Are you using a top coat and a base coat??

I use a kit from Sally Hansen called 5 Minute French Manicure. It comes with a super easy to use pen to draw on the white tips. twisterinAZ introduced me to it and it ROCKS!! I've never been able to do my own french manicures but I can with this. And it lasts for about a week on me.

If you have long enough nails, just ask for a french manicure. It won't do any damage at all - it's all just regular polish. And what were you using that washed off in the shower?

They can do acrylics or gels that have a white tip instead of a clear one, that can't wash off cause the actual plastic nail tip is white.

I dunno if you would want to do that or not, just an idea.

I just go every 2 weeks and get acrylic overlay on my natural nails, so they don't break and chip or fray or anything.

I have been lucky so far and haven't broken one yet, lol.

I use a top and base coat. I've used Sally Hansen, OPI, and borrowed a friend's Chanel, but it all comes off, regardless if I use a basecoat. I have no idea why.

I used to get fiberglass nails done and they are great for french or natural with no polish, they look exactly like your real nails, but are much tougher. They don't damage your nails at all. They are strong, but more flexible than acrilycs so I liked them better for dancing (if you hit one it's not gonna break). They're really expensive though. Almost double what acrilycs are, and it is hard to find a shop that does them.

That is just so bizarre to me. Perhaps you are using a heavy moisturizer or oil on your hands before you apply the polish? Other than that I can't think of anything else that would cause your nail to not hold enamel.

^^That would make sense. I swipe my nails with some polish remover after doing my cuticles so there is no moisture whatsoever on them.

If your nails are thin and bend easily it is almost impossible to keep polish on. Every time they bend the polish gets little cracks, then flakes off. It's usually worse on the tips.

I do have weak nails and I always swipe my nails with a nail polish remover and allow it to dry before doing my nails. It peels off in the shower.

I think some people have more oils that come through their nails. I started to get acyrilic overlays on my short nails and the polish lasts forever!

SS, I used to have the same problems unless I had my nails done with gel.

Then I discovered Nic's Sticks by OPI. Cheap ($6) and you can get them at walmart, or target, or Ebay has some great deals. You just click the pen and the polish comes out. It's like a marker.

They have a white, so you could just do the tips by hand, I imagine.

Any fake nail that you opt for is going to hurt your natural nail (not permanently, it will grow out). They need to rough up the top of your natural nail to get the fake stuff to stick. If you're not too hard on your nails, I'd suggest the gel. I've heard that they're more gentle, but they are also more natural looking.

Maybe you just need to toughen up your nails then. Have you tried OPI Nail Envy? Maybe consider taking a hair and nails vitamin to help strengthen them too.

For three years I was a nail tech in OR and here's my 2 cents!

If you are really worried about acrylics damaging your natural nails, you could try Chip Skip by OPI. I use bond-aid on my toes; its a product made to be used prior to appling artificial nails, but it's main purpose it to dehydrate your nail bed to help product adhere. That, along with a base coat like Creative Nails Sticky (the double sided tape of base coats!) might help.

As far a artificial nails goes, if your nail beds are really oily you may have more lifiting problems with gels than you would acrylics. I recommend finding a good nail tech, not just going to the shop down the street, any one can buy a dremel but it the wrong hands it's not good! They drilled through my nail bed once, ouch! As long as you have a nail tech that properly uses their tools and you don't pick at your nails you will not harm your nat. nails. And if you want them off, PLEASE soak them off, no picking and prying, that's the worst!!!!

Not sure if you have this in the States, but my manicurist got me hooked on BioGel. It doesn't ruin the nail bed and they paint it on your natural nail (you can get tips if you want them to be longer right away). It just makes your nails super strong but still flexible. Plus the gel comes in a million colors and it doesn't chip. My manicure lasts two weeks but some people can make it last up to three. I get my manicurist to airbrush white tips and then she coats it with gel and they last till the next time I go in.

You should try Essie nail polish. I find them super long lasting, esp with Seche Vite topcoat. It lasts me about 3-4 nights of dancing or a week + when I'm not dancing.

ETA: Also heres a thread from another forum with some really great tips for applying nail polish to real nails.
