How do I get this hair?

Now that I've got something resembling a bob, I'm trying to learn the sexiest way to style it. I've discovered that I like it best when I shake it up hard, so it's a little poufy with lots of volume and texture, sort of like this...

How would I get this? Would liquid wax, a volumizing root spray, and blowdrying it upside down work? Is there a way to do it without blowdrying, since I'm growing it out and I want to keep heat styling to a minimum?

use a texture product. i like redkens grit wax as well as their rough clay. both are from the "urban experiment" line. the best way to use it is after blow drying your hair for some lift. you don't need a lot either and don't apply it directly at the roots. both products will give you that textured/pieces look, although the grit wax is a little lighter. the rough clay has a bit more hold and will hold ends together better. i also like big sexy hair's "play harder" for keeping it all in place without losing volume.

i know cause i have a pixie-type haircut... and i do mine very similar at work.

do you have a sephora near you? they've got some killer hair wax/pomade/grip type stuff.

the best hair I've ever seen done was done with a product called Dirt-- but it wasn't tousled-- it was super slick and poofed.

but yeah-- that's one style care area that I need to learn more about too.

I second Grit Wax! I just started using this stuff and it rocks, makes my bob look a little less polished, more touseled.

Well damn, off to buy more product then! Will I find it at the drugstore or will I have to go to Sally's?

^^^ I think you'll need to go to a salon or Ulta... I know the Sally's in Colorado doesn't carry Redken.

Okay. I think I'm gonna try it at home with the liquid wax and pomade and maybe some root spray since I already have that, and then if that doesn't work I'll hunt down the Grit Wax.

I just realized I'm probably going to wind up looking like Amanda Plummer from Pulp Fiction with this huge red poufy bob. LMAO... that's okay with me! I'll be Hunny-Bunny!

What every one else said, and if you can't get enough volume, use a large round brush to blow dry, then tousle it.

Unfortunately it's not really long enough for that. I tried to blow-dry it with my big round brush the other day and it wouldn't stay on the brush because it's too short.

I just did a H'Suan Wen Hua treatment on it and washed and conditioned it, then ran some liquid wax through it, flipped it upside down and spritzed the roots with volumizing spray and blow-dried it upside down until it was just a bit damp. Shaped it with my fingers and when it's completely dry I'll put some pomade in it. So far so good; it's not quite like the picture but it's close, and I think once it gets a little bit longer I can dry it with the round brush and use that grit wax. I'm learning to like it short. It definitely dries more quickly!

When you blow dry it you could also use a diffuser. Its this attachment for your hairdryer that has lots of little knobs like little fingers. You move it in circles against your scalp and it gives you super volume. All the other ideas are good too.

Products will help. I don't know which ones you like to use. I could recommend some Aveda ones but sometimes I feel like I'm advertising with all that. I'll pm you a few recommendations if you like.

As far as styling goes you want to blow dry your hair until it's damp, not wet. Then use the round brush, a concentrater for your hair dryer would be a good idea too. Clip most of your hair up leaving a portion only as wide as the barrel of your brush. Put the brush under your hair and start at the root. As you are drying from the root to the ends move the brush upward at an 180 degree angle as opposed to straight out or down to acheive volume. Once you get that section dry bring more hair down and dry it.

I use to blow dry mine upside down too. But it'll look more polished if you do what I mentioned above. If you point the nozzle of the dryer against the hair's natural direction you make the cuticle stand up making it look less shiny.

A big roller set could work too.

Well, hell, since we're speaking of products I'll recommend some I use.

This a good one, you can put it in wet or damp hair but don't shake it up.

This one is a good root lifter. Spray on the roots of wet or damp hair.

I love and testify to this one. You use it on dry hair. It's a powder. You just sprinkle a little on the scalp, especially around partings and work it in.

you can get grit wax from most salons that carry redken and -some- drug/grocery stores (though a salon is more legit). you can also get it at ulta i believe.

i was sold on it the second my stylist used it on me. i was like "holy shit that's so easy!". makes my hair look "perfectly messy" in a minute or two.

oh oh.. and i wanted to add! if you see "water wax" by redken DO NOT buy it thinking it's "the same". i made that mistake. it's not a bad product.. but it's more for sleek/straight looks. it won't give you the same effect at all.

I hate Water Wax... the only time I use it is around clients hair line so I don't stain thier forehead with color while they're processing. Other than that, the stuff just doesn't do it for me.

Thanks for all the tips, y'all! It looks okay but not as good as the pic. I'll have to buy the grit wax and a smaller round brush, maybe... mine is too big for my short hair.

Couldn't find the Grit Wax at any of the salons I looked at, so I tried the Super Sexy Styling Sauce by Beyond the Zone, which promised the same texturizing effect. Blow-dried with a small round brush and then applied the "Sauce" when it was mostly dry. I'm gonna have bangs cut the next time I go for a trim, I think. In the meantime, how'd I do? I sort of feel like Amanda Plummer in Pulp Fiction, which is fine with me - C'mon, Yolanda, what's Fonzie like??

Cute! I highly recommend Pantene Texturize products. They are readily available and affordable. They have a sculpting wax that would give you some separation, then you can freeze it in place with the Texturize Hair spray.
