Default Those w/ daughters, Barbie doll?

My little girl got her first Barbie. She's her fav doll now and shes always saying "barbies wearing too much makeup" then she will just sit and stare at the doll for a while and starts saying stuff like "this is me mommy, dont i look like her?"...things like that.

I have heard Barbie promotes unhealthy body image, etc and agreed a bit, it could, but never really gave it much thought until now...any thoughts? do you let your daughters play w/ Barbie?

God forbid my daughter have self esteem issues i have/had! i guess thats what it boils down to i am so afraid for her in this terrible world.

I bought my neices American Girl dolls for that exact reason. God forbid they have to go through the ED hell I did - every little bit helps.

You can get them to look like your little girl, or use one of the premade ones that go with the historical books that come with them. And there's TONS of cute clothes for them.

^Trust me, brand new doll and cute accessories? Plastic barbie is a thing of the past.

Good thing about the dolls - if you break them, or chip them, or dye their hair with rit-dye, or amputate something, they have a doll hospital. You send it in, and they come back in a hospital gown with a get well balloon all fixed up.

I hated them as a kid (I was a major tombot with a fleet of Tonka trucks) but both my daughters loved them and owned dozens of the damnable things.

I honestly think kids develop bad body image from the people around them and how THEY behave long before they're influenced by a doll.

I loved my barbies! Didn't they change the look of them a few years ago... made their waist larger or something?

I think any unhealthy body image issues I have came from people or the TV, not my dolls.

yeah but if you can ditch the barbie early on and then discuss later on (in a couple years) why that type of body image is bad-- then it's a good start.

I had a couple barbies, and I'd like to think I'm fine although I will say that I was super pervy (as was my best friend when we'd play barbies.) Those plastic suckers were getting down in a serious way. So yeah, kinda disquieting in a way to think of two little girls playing that their ken and barbie were having sex (at least insofar as a six year old can understand what sex is.)

I doubt you could be that pervy with an American doll at that age.

damn, now I'm thinking about this-- would kids take any doll and be that pervy at that age or is there something about Ken and Barbie that just screams "SLUT HORNDOG!" ?

I had a ton of barbies. /me and my sister would put different colored waskclothes all over our playroom floor, and those were each a different room. Our barbies were intelligent, high powered women, with great jobs and a family. I have so many nice memories, and any body image issues I have were from real people and the media, not a toy. All barbie did for me was bonding with my sister, knowing Women can be powerful and happy, and a cool fantasy world. My little girls will definatly have barbies if they want them.

I dont think that Barbie had a negative impact on me what so ever ......I am supergirly and so it my daughter , she is 22 months . Last night I had to run to the store and I was running around getting ready , my daughter comes into her room and I made a little dress up area for all her costumes and jewelry , anyways she goes over to it and starts accesorising , she put on a hat and grabbed a leopard purse ....it was my prideful moment . I love it , we play with make up and it makes her so happy . She has a mini Louis Vuitton and keeps her toy cell phone in it . I know thats a little off topic but my point is that I make it fun I tell her how cute she is when she has PJs on and just dumped milk on her head ......I think that if you are a strong role model and a good parent with common sense AND most importantly your child has common sense then you dont have to really worry about Barbies and things like that . You cant be afraid to talk to you kids PLUS I am sure she thinks mommy is prettier than Barbie and mommy doesnt look like Barbie , right ???

I don't mind barbie for my girls but you have to be careful we do not allow any bratz toys in our home at all those are insane. I went to a brithday party for a little girl and thats all she got for her birthday i was appalled to see what some of the dolls and stuff looked deftingaly the wrong image for little girls.

Barbies NEVER made me feel bad about my self-image. Girls at school talking about dieting, etc, were much more of an influence. Oh, that and looking through VS catalogues. Also be very careful what you say to your daughter about food, dieting, bodies, etc. Be positive and real. Never bitch about your own appearance in front of her, too!

My mom always made a big positive fuss out of my tall green bean model figure when I was under 13, so when I started gaining weight and changing it was kind of an acceptance/I can be perfect if I diet since I've gained weight now thing. But she also told me in the summer between 8th and 9th grade that I should exercise. Because I was getting cellulite. At 128 lbs...

I don't have any kids but I've seen those bratz dolls in the shops and at first I thought they were a joke. Those dolls look like child whores! Surely thats not a positive image to be giving to children??

Both my daughter and her cousins have Bratz dolls and they aren't influenced by them in any negative way. I admit some of the dolls have on clothes that a hooker can wear, but the company that owns Bratz listens very closely to their consumers.
They have changed the outfits to be less risque for the most part and have released Bratz for the under 10 set (Bratz Kidz) which are fully dressed dolls.

The Bratz dolls are for fantasy and they differentiate themselves from Barbie by having a flashy, fashion forward look. I'm just happy some company came along to challenge the 'Old Guard' i.e. Mattel.

I like how they all come in tons of different shades as opposed to just 'caucasian' and 'african-american'. When I was little I had a ton of black Barbies and one Skipper doll.
My daughter and her friends have dolls of all different colors- white, brown, beige, chocolate, etc. Which provides them with more choices and *can* represent diversity if it is already something taught at home.

I really also dislike those bratz dolls. I know I did think my dolls had the cutest clothes, and I had some matching outfits with them..... if your kid plays with a ton of bratz dolls that all wear bikinis and 1/2 tops and booty shorts, that's what she'll want to wear as well.

I had a ton of Barbies and didn't have ED. Then again, I used to cut my barbie's hair into mohawk and have them perform sex acts with Ken and My Little Pony. Yes, I did, I was a little perv. Still am.

Hahah, My Little Pony? That's a whole new level of perv!

I too made my Barbie have sex with Ken, Skipper, other Barbies, and Ken and another Ken would also be hooking up behind Barbie's back. It was sordid. But I turned out more or less alright.

I also was really into the America Girl Dolls and if I have a daughter I would MUCH rather she have an American Girl Dolls. I like the books that come with them and think they promote a more positive image for little girls to see.

I loved Barbie when I was a little girl, I was always cutting her hair and curling it, lol. Maybe I'm in the right profession now, lol. But I never felt I should look like her. I think that's an image Hollywood produces.

If I had a daughter I would buy her a barbie to play with if she wanted one. I'd probably be more inclined to buy her ones with all colors of hair, different races, etc. Just so'd she know that everybody doesn't have to look the same and she doesn't have to be like everyone else.

I played with Barbie's with my sisters a lot when I was growing up. We made imaginative little communities, it was so much fun. Although by myself I made Barbie and Ken have sex too...he-he.

I don't think anything is wrong with them and none of us ever suffered from ED's.

As for Brat's, all I know is that my sister won't allow me to buy them for my nieces.

Why is it so weird that kids make thier dolls have sex?
I mean they're basically making them have "lives" right?
    Isn't sex a normal thing?

I had no Ken. I made my girl babies sleep together. They didn't scissor or anything just VERY affectionate.

I agree completely. Environment and television (i.e. letting tv raise them) affects them much more than any doll.
