    Default Aspartame

Are you being poisoned by consuming aspartame in diet sodas and in some foods?
Apparently it is being linked to MS and lupas cases.
It is also reportedly responsible for:
    - headaches
    - memory loss
    - blurred vision
    - dizziness
    - anxiety
    - depression
    - uncontrollable anger and rage
    - seizures
    - brain damage

It also makes you crave carbohydrates and gain weight.

This is why aspartame is dangerous:

When the temperature of this sweetener exceeds 86 degrees F,
the wood alcohol in ASPARTAME converts to formaldehyde and then to formic
acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis. Formic acid is the poison found in the
    sting of fire ants.

The methanol toxicity mimics, among other conditions, multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus.

    Well I'm finding this compelling.
I actually gave up diet soda and soda in general about a month ago and I have noticed my body looks better and I feel better too.

Aspartame accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. Many of these reactions are very serious including seizures and death.(1) A few of the 90 different documented symptoms listed in the report as being caused by aspartame include: Headaches/migraines, dizziness, seizures, nausea, numbness, muscle spasms, weight gain, rashes, depression, fatigue, irritability, tachycardia, insomnia, vision problems, hearing loss, heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, loss of taste, tinnitus, vertigo, memory loss, and joint pain.

You probably continue using it because you are addicted. I was terribly addicted to coke zero until recently and it was very hard to give up.

My aunt is a dietician and former body building champion (Miss Universe) and she told me to cut out all the diet products, diet shakes etc and eat fresh food and even foods which i had cut out due to the fat content.
Low fat is not always the answer due to high sugar and salt found in it.
Plus eating the way she taught me makes you feel better because it is good for you.
    She advocates low GI eating.

What are the Benefits of the Glycemic Index?
Eating a lot of high GI foods can be detrimental to your health because it pushes your body to extremes. This is especially true if you are overweight and sedentary. Switching to eating mainly low GI carbs that slowly trickle glucose into your blood stream keeps your energy levels balanced and means you will feel fuller for longer between meals.

Low GI diets help people lose and control weight
Low GI diets increase the body's sensitivity to insulin
Low GI carbs improve diabetes control
Low GI carbs reduce the risk of heart disease
Low GI carbs reduce blood cholesterol levels
Low GI carbs can help you manage the symptoms of PCOS
Low GI carbs reduce hunger and keep you fuller for longer
Low GI carbs prolong physical endurance
High GI carbs help re-fuel carbohydrate stores after exercise

The sad thing is... they are allowed to put that in food based on tests done below body temperature. Once it's in your body, it becomes something entirely different than what's on the label. Fucked up, isn't it? My mom reads about this stuff and used to tell me all about it and make me only want to eat raw foods, etc. Kind of makes me want to go vegan again.... but I won't.

I am totally in the anti-aspartame camp and I'm a big fan of stevia.

Aspartame is bad for you but I would never deny it to anybody who wanted. But the main thing that gets me is FDA collusion along side the manufacturer to get stevia banned for a few years, including Nazi-esqe book burnings(literally) of stevia cookbooks.

I had always thought it was better than sugar, but now I guess I'll just avoid it altogether. Jess has been trying to tell me of its evils but I thought he was just reading some crap somewhere. If I read it on SW, then I know it's true.

When I learned about all the bad stuff that Aspartame does, I quit using it. It is so prolific, however. It is in all kinds of processed foods like yogurt and other sweet dairy products, chewing gum, soft drinks (like flavored water), and a variety of processed foods.

I do have less headaches and mood swings since I quit drinking aspartame laced drinks. I'm not as hungry, either, so I eat better and healthier.

Well, hell. I'm giving up aspartame and start smoking cigarettes because of the health benefits.

It is tough to trust our own FDA. Phen-fen is a perfect argument for double checking the FDA. Oh, and how about all the food recalls of late? 143 million pounds of bad meat tells me that the FDA is understaffed and over worked.

The Snopes article talks only about some of the most outrageous claims made against it, not everything.

Quoting the establishment to debunk the establishment is generally not going to yield the accurate results we want.

A 2006 National Cancer Institute study seemed to ease cancer fears related to aspartame, but that study had major limitations, including its reliance on imprecise food-frequency questionnaires, and it included only subjects between the ages of 50 and 69 who first consumed aspartame as adults. The effects of consuming aspartame from infancy or childhood might be very different, says CSPI, as suggested by the new animal study.

Among those who today called on FDA Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach to review the new aspartame study are former Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials John Froines (now at UCLA) and Peter F. Infante (now at George Washington University); James Huff, current Associate Director for Chemical Carcinogenesis at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS); and Kamal M. Abdo, a toxicologist formerly at the National Toxicology Program of the NIEHS.

As a result of the new study, for the first time CSPI downgraded aspartame on its online Chemical Cuisine directory from a “use caution” rating to “everyone should avoid.” CSPI also urges everyone to avoid the artificial sweeteners acesulfame potassium and saccharin. It rates sucralose, also known by the brand name Splenda, as safe.
I welcome all who like it to use it, but I never ingest it. Why take the risk when there are so many substitutes that taste better?

Then don't. I certainly don't. You notice as of late how those disclaimers in TV pharma ads are becoming longer and more brazen all the time? One commercial I saw actually stated some side effects from the advertised drug could be fatal.

But there's a lot of non-FDA material provided on this subject that suggests that the information in the OP's post is at best unproven, and at worst bunk. Just copy-paste a couple lines from there into Google. Much of the material is from a chain letter that has been circulating since the mid-90's. If aspartame were causing all those ailments that it supposedly causes, everyone from the media, to medical professionals to lawyers would have been all over this years ago.

Considering how much diet soda alone is consumed annually (I believe in fact diet soft drinks now outsell sugared ones) don't you think we'd have so many cases of these ailments that we'd be hearing about these health warnings through channels a lot more mainstream than chain letters and questionable websites?

The thing is, is that the studies which approve it (aspartame) as healthy and/or safe are not independent. The initial studies by which the FDA went on were conducted by the company who produces the chemical, that great, candid and humanitarian corporation Monsanto. Most (92%) of independent studies find it highly questionable in regards to its safety.

We have been hearing about obscene increases in the areas that Jaizine noted in the OP:

Are you being poisoned by consuming aspartame in diet sodas and in some foods?
Apparently it is being linked to MS and lupas cases.
It is also reportedly responsible for:

I know so many people that are on anti-depressants and other drugs to treat a good percentage of the symptoms listed above. Why, all of the sudden are so many people suffering from those things now?

I don't know about the experience of other people, but my personal experience is that I used to suffer from insomnia, headaches, mood swings and various other physical ailments that are gone since I quit drinking diet drinks and diet yogurts.

I just know that I feel better. I'm not going to return to drinking diet drinks (I usually just get iced tea when at restaurants).
