    Default Want purple hair

I want purple hair so so bad. I'll just give up and buy a wig for work. I have a few questions though...

*How damaging is Manic Panic or Fudge hair color for your hair?
*If I want to go deep purple (a bit darker than the girl in my gifs below) do I have to bleach it first? I'd really rather not since its so damaging.
*Should I not do an at home dye job but instead go to a salon then?

I have dark brown hair now but want to try hair like that emo guy in the link.

    Advice? Tips...all appreciated.

I've had purple hair before. lol. Memories.

Anyway, I used Manic Panic. It wasn't damaging to my hair, but DAMN was it damaging to my sink and bathroom. Be REALLY careful with this stuff, it STICKS.

I didn't bleach my hair because I'm already blonde, but it is suggested. You could try it without, but it probably won't be as noticeable on your hair, it will just look like a tint.

If you have different colors on your hair now, then odds are the purple is going to come out in different shades. Same applies if you have roots. If you're dealing with lots of different colors, I'd probably go to a salon. HTH.

What color is your hair? Is it dyed already? If it's anything but blonde, you'll have to bleach it to get a true purple color. The lighter you bleach, the more vivid the color will be. You will probably have to re-dye your hair every couple of washes to keep it vividly colored. I have been dying my hair at home every color imaginable for 10 years, and I found purple to be one of the easiest to maintain, but if you want a color like the one in the pictures you will likely damage your hair achieving it.

Is it more damaging than bleaching it? I used to have honey color hair like Tyra's.

Manic panic gets a thumbs down from me. It has a tendency to wash out quickly and fade unevenly.

I do highly recommend Special Effects Dyes http://www.specialeffectsusa.com/home.html.

Special effects lasts for a solid 4 weeks with regular washing/conditioning. It does fade but at least it fades in a controlled fashion. manic Panic dyes end up fading in weird splotches.

Aside from that, You should probably bleach your hair. Perhaps a few bleached highlights thrown in so you don't have to bleach your whole head. These semi-permanent dyes take much better to hair that is heavily processed. The color will be truer to the bottle as long as your hair is very light, otherwise you'll just end up with a tint.

The semi-permanent dyes themselves are not very damaging. There's no bleach or peroxide or anything in them. It's the bleaching to get your hair to a suitable shade to USE those dyes that will really mess it up.

In my experience, if you try to use purple on your current hair color it will come out muddy, brownish, purplish, not vibrant and bright at all. You will need to start on a light shade to achieve that. If you're not experienced in bleaching your hair or confident in your ability, I'd go to a salon!

me I'm too stubborn and CHEAP to go that route so I do it all myself.

My natural hair color is about the same as your current hair. I dyed purple over it and you couldn't see it at all. It just made my hair look more brown. You will def. need to bleach first.

I've had really good results from Jerome Russell's Punky Color . Manic Panic is watered down crap, IMO. That sort of dye does stay better on slightly wrecked hair and if you want it PURPLE, you'd prob need to bleach it.

I had varying shades of red and purple from 14-26 or so. The dye itself won't damage your hair, but the bleach will! If you do it, don't wash your hair as long as you can stand it, bleach it in your prefered way (I used 20-30 vol), let it dry, protect your skin (put vaseline on the skin near the hairline, all over) and leave the color on for way longer than the tube says. I usually did it before bed and slept with a plastic bag on my head.

The pic is me with Pillarbox red, mixed with Plum (obviously, I am the standing one). You'll probably want something like Violet. A lot of purples are very pinky red.

All I can tell you is you'll get lots of compliments! I had a brown/purple mix and everyone told me how much they loved it. Mine were extensions, so I didn't have to worry about dye.

    ditto, ditto, ditto.

I had bleach blonde hair to start(a la holly), and my pink needed to be redone 1x eveyr 3 washes. and it came off on everything, my sheets, all over my bathroom, my towels, my clothes....

ick. i'd advise against that brand.

My hair color instructor hates the stuff.

Maybe put some purple extensions in? We had a salon come in recently who uses SO.CAP extensions, they seemed like really nice extensions.

Lola Rose and I had the same experience. The pink faded FAST and got over everything, it was ridiculous.

You are going to have to bleach it for a true purple color. I have seen awesome purple tinted hair (on an Asian over her natural black hair) where it looked black straight on but in the light/sun it was PURPLE. It was way badass, but it doesn't seem thats the look your going for.

I like the darkness of my hair I have now. It hides the roots well. hehe I would get extensions but I still have to be an attractive stripper....purple hair doesn't fit into my attractive stripper look.
I guess its no on manic panic then. Glad I didn't waste time on that one.

Joplin, thats what I want, really dark but a hint of purple in the dark. Dark as in club scene or dinner with friends kind of lighting. I guess I still have to go to the salon to get it right.

Manic Panic sucks. I dyed my hair black with it, and it proceeded to turn blue, then red before finally washing out a week later. I was BLUE DAMMIT. It sucked ASS. Special Effects works so much better.

Zxcire and I tried to do my hair blue and it turned this awful seafoam green. I even tried to redo it the next day...still green.

Manic Panic and Beyond the Zone both are fine for hair, it's the bleaching that's the rough part, lol!

My hair is dark brown naturally, and currently it's mostly the same, but the top is pink, I mean pink pink, lol.

Like a mix between MP cotton candy pink and flamingo pink, lol.

I had to use a bleaching powder and 50 weight for 45 mins then rinse out and condition, then do it again with the bleach and developer. Then shampoo and condition the FUCK outta it with Melinia Mud (sp) (at Sally) for 30 mins then rinse and straighten then I put the pink in and left it for 3 hours, then bam, it was done!

If you have super healthy hair to start with, it will damage it yes; but not ruin it.

This is HORRIBLE pic of me, my face makes me look like I'm a meth head or something, but it was wind burn and no makeup, but you get the gist of what I mean, lol! In this pic it was more reddish pink, but now I found found a color/mix of colors that gets me the pink color I like, lol.

Actually the chick I knew I'm 99.9% positive she dyed it herself from a box at the store. I'll look next time I go to HEB and see if I can find the color/brand.

I knew someone who dyed her dog with Manic Panic. She said it was vegetable based and didn't hurt the dog. I would think you'd have to lighten your hair to get the purple to show up much but I'm not a hairdresser.

What ever color brand you buy it's what the base is made of that will play factor in how long it last...You don't want the water based stuff that bleeds out in a week you want the oil/ahol based stuff that last aleast a month if not more before you have to reapply.

AS for color like blue/black or black /purple that's when you dye it dark 1st then apply color unless you buy blue black or another simluar combo and get that effect with 1 color.

As for bleaching unless you want a tint over color like blue black or you are a blonde to begin with you must probably should strip your hair of color till it's atleast banana yellow then die it the color you want. (most of the time that's how they get the colors on the boxes) If you bleach it lighter then that changes are you are doing heavy damage to your hair which is why goes for white is hard becuz for most people their hair will tend to break or fall off at that point so I recommend going to a pro for white or extreme blonde frosting.

the new "amplified" line is great though. they specifically made it because their colors fade. they made it to compete with other brands.

it is not as bad for your hair as other products, but it's not as "good" for your hair as their original (which is why it stays better).

i use manic-panic and this is my hair (albeit the room is a bit dark and it's a webcam.. so the color is a bit brighter irl)

that pic is wildfire. i use pillarbox as well and my favorite is the electric lava (but i can almost never find it).

they make "purple haze" and "ultra violet" in the "amplified" line... "purple haze" is a bit darker and is probably what you'll what if you decide to go with it. the amped line is fairly new so most of the bad reviews your hearing are from people who used the original formula (which DOES fade super fast).

my advice (for your hair) is to dye it a light brownish color first INSTEAD of bleaching it. if you want a few brighter strands you can use one a highlighting kit first or one of the highlights/dye combo boxes that are so popular now. i'm telling you (from many years of exp doing this) that you will get much more even results if you apply it to a lighter COLOR rather than fully bleacher hair.

sure.. the bleached hair will give you brighter results.. but they'll be more uneven and they'll fade to a really funky tone (no matter WHAT brand you choose). i do want to note though.. that my personal exp is only with manic panic. i haven't tried the layering with any other brand... but i imagine as long as the brand doesn't have any heavy "lifters" in it, it will work just the same.

i get my color(s) by first dying my hair a light to medium red. i only do this once every 3 months. then i apply the MP about once every 3-4 weeks. it's not really a pain in the ass.. since you just massage it in like shampoo and let it sit for a 1/2 an hour.

also, if you blow dry your hair a bit while the color is in it will amp up the results. i recommend this.

also also, (i'm just full of info ) don't forget to put p-jelly on your forehead, ears and neck before dying. otherwise you'll have bright purple skin. oh and.. BUY GLOVES.. since most of these types of dye don't come with any (although amplified does).

if you are going to bleach your hair-- get it professionally done.
I used to bleach my hair when it was short and had no problem.
however, I tried to do the same thing with long hair and fucked it all
    up.

manic panic is good. I really recommend waiting a week or two
after you lighten your hair to do the manic panic.

manic panic does lighten but you can do a couple things to help out.
the manic panic has an anti-fading shampoo that helps ( I really liked the
smell, but since the bottle was $8 I would rather just spend that on the
dye and redye my hair more often.)

I've also heard you can mix a couple tablespoons of the dye into a regular
shampoo and keep it on for a few minutes and this also helps.

also-- I would recommend getting a second color of manic panic because it helps even out the fading.
for example-- pink fades into orange, but if you mix a tiny bit of purple into it (or even blue) this doesn't happen nearly as much.

blue fades into green. mix purple into it and it fades into a morning glory blue.

I'm not sure what purple fades into because by that point I was half-and-halfing pink and purple anyways. But I would suggest mixing in a bit of pink or blue to cut the fading (blue would make it fade into morning glory purple.)

since you mentioned you want to be a bit darker, I would try to either get purple and a darker color (like a dark red or a dark blue), or I would custom mix one of the crimson manic panic colors with the blue, or trying a little bit of black mixed with purple. (note: I have not tried this color combinations personally so I cannot attest to what they fade into.)

I would recommend that unless you are planning on chopping your hair off soon and going on the hair pill binge, that you either tree braid your hair with purple hair (also known as the invisible braid), or that you have purple hair randomly microbraided into your do.

at least with invisible braids you can have all of your hair purple, but the microbraiding is cheaper and easier.

However, as someone who fucked up her hair, I can say I really wished I'd either a) spend $100-300 getting my hair professionally lightened, or
    b) gone the fake extension route to shake things up hair wise.

it IS expensive, but imagine your frustration eight months to a year later on at STILL trying to grow out fucked up hair.
