    Default Waxing or shaving........

So I'm a shave monster.... I'm too scared to wax my kitty because I can barely stand plucking my eyebrows so I figure that would be torture to my poor puss.

But I get sick of shaving, so my question is how long does a wax last on a bikini area, legs, ect. Does it give you a more smoother appearance then shaving?

I waxed every month for awhile. I was totally smooth for about a week, week and a half, and then the hair grew back much slower and less dense afterwards. Honestly the pain is tolerable. I'm a total pussy when it comes to ouchies, and I lived through it month after month. The first is the worst and as the hair grows in finer, it's sequentially less painful.

However! I calculated that I was spending approx $2400 a year in waxing (armpits, legs and brazilian) and I got a package deal for laser hair removal for the same areas for $3500 plus free touch-up treatments for two years after I'm done. So I cancelled waxing and started lasering. After just one treatment, I've noticed an immense decrease in hair growth. So to me this is the only way to go. I know you're black and it's sometimes tougher to achieve permanent results with laser hair removal if your skin/hair tone are too similar, so I don't know if this would be a good option for you or not. But I'm loving it.

I shaved and just recently started getting waxed. I was told it would start coming in in about 3 weeks and it would be time to do it again in about 5. I'm not sure how long it's been, probably about that time, and I'm a little bit hairy but not bad.

The worst part is, surprisingly, around the mons. I fixed that problem for the most part by leaving a landing strip. You'd think around the asshole etc would be awful but it's just really hot.

They told me the first time is definitely the worst. We'll see, maybe they just said that so I'd come back But it's really not that bad. By far preferable to shaving before work every damn day.

    Definitely going for laser someday.

I do brazilians on and off. I have absolutely no tolerance for pain, and the first is the worst. But after going every 3 weeks religiously (never go more than 3 weeks in between), it doesn't even hurt. and the hair does grow back thinner and thinner that eventually, 3 weeks came and i didn't even have any hair to wax.

that is true. Wendy Williams was actually saying that there's a special type of machine that is effective on dark skin, so you have to make sure they actually have this stronger machine, otherwise you'll just be wasting your money.

^I sympathize, sashabunny! I'm going to the American Laser Center. They claim that their lasers are just as effective on dark complected people because they use a combination of infra and radio or something. Anyway, I also was irritated about having to let the hair grow out to get waxed; I missed a lot of weeks of work because I had to be hairy. So the laser thing works just fine so far with my lifestyle but I do hope it's effective ultimately!

Waxing can hurt... a lot. But the thing that bugs me is the fact that you have to let hair grow back in before you can wax again. When I'm dancing... this really isn't an option.

I'm gonna say a wax lasts 4-5 days (at least on me it did) and then I would have to let it grow out and repeat the process...

    So I shave...

The first wax on any body part it the worst. Right now, I get my eyebrows, upper lip, underarms, upper leg, and a brazilian, but not all at the same time! I admit that the first brazilian I got was horrific and I thought I'd never survive, but the next time wasn't so bad. Like it was mentioned above, the pain subsides quickly, and you have smooth skin for so much longer than shaving. Nowadays, I only shave my legs below my knees.
People equate sexy with promiscuous. They think that because I'm shaped this way, I must be scandalous - like running around and bringing men into my hotel room. But it's just the opposite.

So with waxing, you have to let it grow back before you can wax again. But what do you do in between waxes, like when the hair is coming back in? I know it'll be thinner, but on a person with fair skin and dark hair, it would still be really noticeable. Any suggestions?

I have never waxed before, anywhere. I've tried depilatories like Nair, but usually I just shave and pluck. Even with waxing, there's stray hairs left behind, so for me it's better to shave.

I have no solution; you really have to let it get to a certain length before the wax will pick it up again, and I have gone in with two week's worth of growth and still had hairs that were too short to pick up. Can't shave or pluck when you're approaching a wax session. That was the big problem that I (and it sounds like a couple other ladies) had with waxing.

laser on the genital area? is that safe? wouldnt that put you at risk of cancer down there or something? what if the laser hits a delicate area?

    Errrmm....

    http://www.skinlaserdirectory.org.uk/hairemoval.htm

1.) "These lasers all produce a bright pure red light that is not cancer forming. It does not penetrate far into the skin, just a few millimeters. It is not like X-rays or radiotherapy. However it is dangerous to eyesight and protective goggles must be worn."

2.) "A laser is simply a source of very bright light that is all of one colour. The light is fired as a very brief flash and the energy is absorbed by dark hair follicles yet diffuses safely away in pale skin. The light energy is turned into heat as it is absorbed and the length of the flash is carefully controlled so that this heat does not spread and damage other parts of the skin. In this way the dark hair follicles can be selectively heated and damaged. This is sufficient to cause the hair to fall after a week or two and any subsequent regrowth to be finer and sparser."

The only time that I felt anything was when the laser found a hair that I hadn't shaved down to the skin and so the surface area got a tiny zap. But if it was below the surface, I barely felt a thing. And uhhhhh compared to waxing, which DOES hurt all over on "delicate areas"? Yeah, laser is the best thing ever.

Update: Sigh, I have to shave regularly again. It's been just over a month since my first session and unfortunately I have another month before my next one, which is a little annoying. I want to get zapped again now! My armpits are still growing hair very slowly and sparsely. Same for my legs, although the front and sides are really the only areas showing any growth. My kitty is apparently the most prolific part of my body; I can't tell much difference in the growth speed and density from one session. Hope that the next one takes out more of the hair.
