Default Smoke is making my skin look damaged!!

The skin on my cheeks looks dull and stressed. I went to a spa and they told me it's damage from "free-radicals". I spend no time in the sun, I just KNOW it's from the smoke in the club!! My skin was fine prior to dancing.

This reason alone, is becoming incentive enough for me to quit this job!!!

They told me I can benefit from glycolic peels, a series of 6. $450 dollars! Whatcha think? I might get a second opinion at another spa..

Anybody here have aging skin due to this job??

smoke and the clubs UV lights are murder on your skin... You can do at home glycolic acid treatments for much less- I've used Natura Bisse's Glyco Peel in the past ($170 for approximately 6-10 applications), but honestly, the shit you can get off ebay works just as well and starts as little as $10. I've used as much as a 50% peel, but my skin is a little sensitive and I have less irritation when I stick to 25-30%.

If you DIY a glycolic peel, just remember to keep everything else mild and acid free (this includes AHA, BHA, retinol, etc). You'll want to use a gentle cleanser, alcohol free toner, and a basic, penetrating moisturizer.

I used to cleanse, gently pat my skin dry, apply my peel, leave it on for 10-15 minutes, rinse, apply a hydrating and/or oxygenating mask, wait 10-20, rinse, then tone and moisturize.

For you're daily skincare when you're not peeling, use a moisturizer with a mild AHA, BHA, glycolic, or retinol at night , and make sure to use sunscreen every day and at work.

Check out http://www.makeupartistschoice.com. They have a full range of glycolic, lactic acid and TCA peels in all kinds of strengths, and their prices and service are great. You can buy kits that contain everything you need to do it (pre-peel cleanser, gloves, etc--though you don't really need gloves with a 30-50% glycolic), and a 1oz bottle that will give you about 10-12 peels costs about $50 including shipping.

If you have sensitive skin, try their lactic acid or enzyme peels. My sister uses the enzyme and really likes it. I've done 30% and 50% glycolic, and 12.5% TCA, with great results.

That is incredibly scary that one could get the same glycolic on the Internet as in the spa. It's supposed to be for professional use only because if one overdoes it on their skin, it will ruin it. It's a very strong exfoliant and too much use (Cher has used it too much) will cause your skin cells to reproduce too fast and you will look worse.

I know at the school I went to for skin care, offered 6 sessions of Glycolic at like $200, so maybe check out a beauty school for prices. Even if you don't spend any time in the sun, you should still wear sunscreen of at least an SPF 30 every day. Just walking out to your car can cause skin damage, even on cloudy days.

I've read really food things about the makeup artists choice peels. I think on www.makeupalley.com they got great reviews. I think I'll be purchasing from that site soon.

Thanks! 450$ is sooo much. I just don't want to mess up my skin if I do it myself. I'll make sure to do plenty of research on this.

I swear by Vitamin C cream. I've been dancing for 15 years and noticed a great improvement after a short time of using it 10 years ago.

I usually buy it from gnc.

I don't think the peels will actually help prevent further damage...

I do recommend you buy a high strength vitamin E oil...(like 2,000 IUE) and rub in on your face before applying makeup. It acts as a shield to prevent much (but not all) of the free radical damage from smoke.

also, ingest an antioxidant vitamin before your shift (just google what they would be) ( You know smthn with E, C...licopene (tomatoes!)

Drink WATER like there was no tommorow and stay away from the liquour as this would only worsen the issue!

    Tell your custy smthn like.......
'giggle giggle" (bat the eyes) I know you are gonna be upset, but I am allergic to cigarrettes. I'll get you a new one when I'm done if you put if out for me".. I know this sounds obnoxious , but it works atleast 50% of the time...

I was working at a smokey club-cigars too. Bleh. I'd start the shift looking nice and smooth and end with dry skin and lines! I use jojoba oil on my hair and I started applying it to the liney parts and my neck before bed-seems to help. I've also rediscovered Palmer's cocoa butter lotion for the rest of my body-seems to work better than my expensive Body Shop or B&BW lotion, honestly.

I'm going to try the Vit E! At 31 I know the lines are coming...

I second taking vitamins, esp. Vitamins C, E, and folic acid.

In fact, I'm gonna go git me some today...

Things that work for me (when I'm not too lazy to bother ):

--mixing vitamin E oil into collagen-elastin cream
--mixing antioxidant/vitamin C serum into vitamin E cream
--removing makeup (right after work!) with jojoba oil
    --Prevention anti-aging cream
--exfoliating with a natural sugar scrub once a week
--putting creams on right after a warm shower (when skin absorbs the most moisture)
    --applying unscented sunscreen before work

I will say that it does seem reversible. When I was dancing, at first people took me for 18-20; then they took me for 22-24 after I'd been working for half a year. I believe this is due to the smoke. I stopped about a year ago and now everyone thinks I'm 18 again, which is really goofy and irritating since I'm a teacher, but hey! when I go back to dancing, it'll be fun times. I have also been wondering how to prevent smoke damage. The vitamin C and E stuff sounds like a good plan...

If you still want to go through with the glycolic peels to help damage that has already occurred, you can order peels in sample sizes from the site Aviendha listed. I just ordered 3 samples packs for about $50. One TCA peel, One glycolic peel, and a lactic acid peel. I'll report back with the results when I start using them.

If you use antioxidants internally and externally(vitamin c, vitamin e, green/white tea, etc.) you may be able to slow down the effects of the smoke on your skin. I've heard Paula's Choice antioxidant serum is pretty good and can be worn under your makeup at work, but there are a lot of other options out there.
