    Default Worried about arthritis

Do any long term strippers here, most likely older or retired I suppose, have arthritis? It's something I've been growing more worried about with age. It used to be that when I danced I would feel like crap the next morning. Now when I dance I feel like crap for almost a week.

I've always known that stripping isn't good for the joints, but the moment weighed more heavily than the future. Well the future is here and now when I feel achy and joint pain I think omg, is this arthritis?

I haven't danced full time for 10 years. I've always exercised, practiced yoga, eaten healthy. I've stripped on a part time basis and always stretched beforehand. I've always done the "right thing" in terms of taking care of myself and it shows. I just want to dance 1.5 more years, but even though I look the part I worry about the physical toll it might ultimately be taking. Just rambling with achy fear I guess....*sigh*.

well...the reason dancing leads to joint degeneration and arthritis is because of the heels! Wether they're platforms or simple 3 inchers, it's all in the shoe! I recommend that you compromise with yourself...you know, still look hot but work it in a costume that allows a healthy shoe...themed outfits, like sexy cowgirl with healthy flat cowboy boots...things like that.

I have a shakey hip and only use flat shoes and I make money just as fine as before. Just weigh out what's more important, sexy shoes or a sexy healthy you.

I've been dancing 7 years. I have arthritis in certain places. But the worst arthritic pain is from a break in my foot, on the sesamoid bone. I broke that because of dancing, it was a stress fracture from too much hard dancing on the balls of my feet (which is what the shoes make you do). I saw several docs and none were as helpful as my acupuncturist, who kept me in the shoes nightly. she's awesome. i take herbs to strengthen bones as well, and deal with long term joint pain.

But, it's inevitable. We will all have it from prolonged use; hell how many of us actually stretch before work? I get strange looks from others in the DR when I do, so.. you can be sure there's a VERY small % of dancers who stretch and are good to their bodies the way they should be. (granted, most are probably on this site heh)

If you have other arthritic Qs, PM!

    Love it!

I am also an older dancer. I didn't start wearing platforms (aside from boots) until four years ago. However, I had no foot problems until last year when I started training for a marathon in FLAT SHOES! Go figure, right?

I did speak to my doctor when i first started wearing platforms, because my knees hurt. he said it would help to switch shoes whenever my feet felt tired.

It has helped at bit. It's funny, there girls in the dressing room will always ask if I am leaving when I am just switching shoes. But it does make a difference.

Which shoes are the healthiest? What if your club doesn't allow flats for the most part since theme outfits aren't generally allowed?

Any suggestions for manufacturers or a shape of heel that can distribute the weight more evenly? Are there any that have ergonomic padding under the ball of the foot? Do a straps make a difference?

I think boots with a thicker heel and platform with tight ankles might provide the best support, but I'm not sure boot are always going to be allowed where I'm auditioning. I might have to kiss my boot fetish goodbye.

ETA: Kinda random, but I'm looking for white shoes, as the rumor is that people bank while wearing white? Clear is my next choice, as black makes my legs look awful and stumpy for some reason.

I have to admit, I would feel positively naked without the stripper shoes! Switching them is a good idea though, and I'm now searching for a good acupuncturist. For me it's joint pain, but also a generalized achy/fatigued feeling that I think acupuncture could really help with. Since I posted this I've done the legs-up-the-wall yoga pose with a bolster after work and my legs have felt better the next day.

Joint pain- meaning knee pain? I don't have arthritis so I can't really advise you about it. I was wondering the same thing actually. One of my knees hurts sometimes too. I agree stretching before and after helps. Also when you get home from work and your knee hurts- follow RICE- rest, ice it, wear a compressive brace available at drugstores and walmart, and elevate the knee to or above the heart level. This will reduce swelling and inflammation which will reduce the pain and speed recovery. Also the supplement glucosamine lubricates the joints and makes knees feel better. Also taking ibruprofen at or after work reduces swelling and speeds recovery. Also try to avoid crawling on your knees as it's hard on them. I got most of this info from The Knee Crisis Handbook which I read when I had knee pain. It has other good info on knee pain too.
I wish there was a website devoted to dancer knees Lol. When I went to the dr to have him look at it, I didn't want to tell him I danced so I told him I was doing lots of squats exercise (what we do to pick up tips). He looked at me like I was stupid and was like "Well stop doing squats."

I find the tall ellies (7 1/4 I think) are less steep. This way there is less pressure one the big toe joint. I wear the 821 Juliet. I cannot wear other shoes because they really hurt my big toe joints. I already stock up as it is, if I ever heard they were going under I would buy SO many!
