So I'm getting back into Photography. I did a "test" shoot the other night with my ever-so-willing subject. She's a natural---put her in front of a camera, she poses without needing suggestions. For the test shoot, I did it at night. Big mistake on my part really, because the lack of natural light made the shots appear muddy after editing. I use fabric for backdrops (I just tack it to the wall and it seems to work very well. It's also very inexpensive.) The second shoot I did was yesterday, during the day. Had some good natural light showing through with the window blinds up. I do have a question for the Photogs out here---What would you recommend for lighting? I intend to do a lot of shooting in the house, and a lot of the time I'm sure I'll be shooting in the early evening or at night (It's when my kids are most "calm"). Again, I'm looking for inexpensive. Would it be as simple as getting another couple of lamps to put on either side of the shooting area? Suggestions are welcome! The first pics I'm posting are of the test shoot. Second set is from yesterday with the natural light in addition to the house lights. While I'm pleased with some of the shots, I'm critical of others. Let me know what you think! I overprocessed a lot of the shots to compensate for the horrible quality that the lack of lighting gave.

PS: Hubby got me a new camera for Valentine's Day. I'm shooting with a Samsung S730. It's 7.2 Mega Pixels, 3x Optical Zoom, ASR, and a 2.5" TFT Color LCD. I like it, but it's far-more complicated that the one I used for 3 years (Kodak Easy Share).

    First set:

They look nice She is a doll!

What is your ISO setting at? they seem grainy unless that is the effect you are going for.

If shooting in natural light get a white, oh man what are they called? those big oh poster boards, can get them for a buck or less at any store and place on the opposite wall from where the light come sin, works as a light reflector.

Try not use the zoom, it's better to zoom with photoshop or Gimp.

    What lights are you using?

Thank you for the compliments on Delia.. She's a doll for sure. She totally loves dressing up and having her pictures taken. If I'm in her face with a camera regularly though--she hates it.

I'll have to check on the ISO setting. I'm still getting familiar with this camera, so I have to find where that is.

Thanks for the tip on the boards.. I'll have to pick some of those up.

As for the lighting, I just use the regular house lights. I think they're soft-white bulbs--maybe 60 or 75 watts. I can't remember. Do you think if I take the globes off for shoots, the lighting will improve?

For editing, I use PhotoImpact 10 and PSP (Paint Shop Pro).

The first two of the reshoot I posted, I did some artsy fartsy stuff on them. I liked the effect. The first shot she was too close to the backdrop which is why that shadow's there. I was too lazy to edit it out.. lol

Try getting a higher watt. I use a 200. But they have lights that I am dying to get but they cost a lot!!! I am so duh right now cause I have to get the kids lunch ready but she is so adorable!!!

Once you find your ISO setting, try the lowest this way the picture will be clear.

    I'll be back

Hello darlin' I have missed ya loads. Dear Delia is growing up beautifully

Ok so I'm no expert but I do know a lil' sumthin sumthin and thought I'd offer the little knowledge that I do have.

AS HHL mentioned if you are using the flash don't forget to make sure that your ISO setting is as low as poss. Also if you have a shutter setting on the cam adjust it to a slower speed. When using flash, a slow shutter help's to reflect the true color's in the picture; whereas a faster shutter will cause the flash to over expose the pic, which will result in a washed out look.

I also agree with HHL that using the zoom function will compromise the quality of the picture, so it is always best to do this and other types of editing) with PS. However if you were to be taking closeup pic of a flower for instance the macro setting (the symbol which looks like a flower) will help to set the right focus.

I would suggest either a hologen or florescent true daylight - full spectrum light. I use one for when I am doing makeup on clients. You purchase them for really cheap. This what they look light. http://www.environmentallights.com/p..._Soft_Daylight
    http://www.bulbrite.com/catalog/inde...lection_id=102

Also Smith Victor Corp. is known famously for their pro quality lighting products for reasonable prices http://www.smithvictor.com/products/index.asp

This site has great tips. I have it bookmarked.

Do you mean foam core? If so yes they work wonderfully.

Thank you SO much for the information, I really really appreciate it. And I'll definitely fool with the settings and stuff (as soon as I find them.. lol) I really hate new things because you get so used to the way your old things are. I miss my old camera! But I couldn't "not" accept the Valentine's Day present from the Hubby. Grr.. lol

When I get back to the point I was with Photography years ago, I'll probably get a Pro camera. Right now, they're just too damn expensive for me (or I'm just too damn cheap.. Heh)

I seriously appreciate the links and tips! Please keep them coming!

    (I miss you too, girl!)

I'm not completely sure i agree with the folks who say don't zoom. When you are doing a facial portrait, if you get the camera really close to the subject, perspective will make the nose look larger than normal. It is best to be as far away from the subject and use a long lens. Then the features will be in proportion.

I think your photos are lovely, and they make me want to jump through the screen and give Delia a hug.

As far as lighting, look here: http://www.studiolighting.net/studio-lighting-setups/

Mike is she zooms in and is too far the quality of the image suffers, perhaps getting closer and using the close up function would be better. I have to go check if her camera has that option.

She does have a macro setting. Have you read the manual? I know it sucks cause they are huge and little letters but it helps

Did a shoot with both the Kids yesterday (Tuesday). Had only Natural Light (no flash), and Hunter actually participated this time which made me happy. Heh. When we get the rebate deposited into the account in May, Dan's getting me a Nikon D40.. Woot! So, I'm practicing like crazy on this Samsung. Let me know what you all think

    LOL Hiya.. Been doing good
Unfortunately no tripod yet, but I'm getting one this weekend. Out of 88 pictures I took with that shoot, only about half came out alright. Too much caffeine and picture-taking doesn't go so well together.. LOL

We managed to go outside last week with them when we thought it was actually a nice day (it looked nice from the window anyway). We got to the park and it was freezing and windy.. So we spent about 10 minutes there total. I can't wait for it to get warmer so we can do some outdoor shoots, preferably at the park (Roger Williams).

Anyway.. took a few shots there, but the Sun was all wrong. They're below..

These are ones from a nighttime shoot in the house with the Daughter last week. I just took them to mess around with different effects (Got PhotoShop CS3 and PhotoImpact X3 Upgraded from older versions). I absolutely love the first one:

Thanks everyone.. And HHL.. Of course, Hop in and share!

Jay.. I don't have the D40 yet. I'll be getting it in May when we get the Relief Rebate. Can't wait. So for now, I practice on the one that Dan got me for Valentine's Day (Samsung S730). It's not bad for a point & shoot, but I'm really looking forward to the Nikon.

I try to keep my ISO at 100, unless I don't have natural light coming in (like at nighttime). In that case, I raise it to 200-400 as needed. I don't go any higher than 400 because the quality starts stinking after that. But I believe I can go up to 1000.

    Great pics, HHL!

After speaking with the Hubby, we've decided that if I'm getting an expensive camera, it might as well be one of the best. So after researching, I've narrowed it to some choices. Which do you all think I should go with? Keep in mind that I plan to do this full-time when I blow off the rusty-ness (was into Photography years ago, but with non-digital cameras) and really get to know the new camera. So I want something that'll be the last step to a Pro camera. My choices:

I've heard a lot of people talk about Nikons and Canons, but how are the Olympus cameras? The price kind of draws me in ($649.99 at Circuit City), and the fact that it includes 2 lenses. Anyone have experience with them?
