    Default Pizza Place Rant

Okay I am going to jump on the bandwagon of McDonalds/food service rants.

There's this one pizza place across the street from my job's office. THEY SUCK. Their food is okay in taste(although VERY unhealthy and you can tell by the taste), but definitely not great, and they screwed me over big time. The worst part is, it's the ONLY food place within reasonable walking distance from my work except for this overpriced Kosher cafe, which has very good food but is overpriced and is closed most of the time.

First of all, the employees aren't the most friendly. A while back, I placed an order as usual. My coworker and I had been ordering pick-up from them on a somewhat regular basis. You'd think they'd appreciate the business, esp since my work's town is a dying little borough town that used to be a lot more thriving than it is now. So anyway, I placed the order and the woman rudely hung up on me before I could even ask her what the subtotal was, the time it'd be ready, etc. VERY unprofessional.

So I wait 20mins(giving them more than enough time) and head down there and the idiots all look at me blankly and say "what food order?" By this time I was starving and had been looking forward to my food. And they didn't even make it! Then I explained what happened and added in a complaint that I'd been hung up on. They claimed that the woman who'd taken my order had to leave the place for a "big emergency." No apology, no coupon, no complimentary food item for my inconvenience. Being meek, I asked them what they could do for me(I wasn't ballsy enough to blatantly suggest I get free food for my trouble). The asshole middle aged guy(him and the woman are husband and wife owners of the place, I think) pawned me off to a guy that was very obviously on his break, sitting in one of the booths! The guy says, "I dunno...uh, they'll make you anything you like" so I said "how much?" and they said "the price on the menu"(i.e., full price, NO discount) as if they were doing me this HUGE favor by simply making me any food at all. I told them my order from before and they claimed they didn't have it. What?? So I said that I was not interested if they didn't have what I wanted, esp after I wasted all that time on my work break and was left with no food, so I walked out.

I went back to the office and told my coworker what happened. He lamented and thought it was retarded. He said "They shoulda given you free food at the very least!" and I thought, "Yeah, he's right. WHy the fuck was I so fuckin' meek and passive?" so I called them up to complain and say that I wouldn't be coming back at all anymore unless they tried to save my business. Who answers the phone, but the same woman that hung up on me!! So much for her "emergency"! I explain everything, she is nicer and actually apologetic, then rambles on about how she's been in business for 25 yrs and values customers, yadda yadda yadda, she wants to save my business, yadda, and she will give me something for free next time.

By this point, I was fed up with the place but I wanted to get my free food at least. So the next time I placed an order and went to pick it up, the asshole lazy middle aged man is there, and claims that he doesn't know what I'm talking about when I mention that the woman told me I would get a free sandwich for my troubles from a few days earlier. He shrugs carelessly and says "eh, she's gotta be here to do that," charges me anyway, and refuses to tell me when she works next after I ask him. Ugh. Sounds like a trick to get me to keep coming back, huh? I regret that I paid for the sandwich anyway. I shoulda just walked out!

This happens a few more times. Finally when I place an order, I get the woman on the phone again. I remind her about the free food offer, and she says that she'll handle it when I get there to pick up my food. WHen I get there, her idea of "free" is giving me a $2 discount on a $6 sandwich.

Oh yeah and throw into the mix the times that they claimed to be "out" of an item. Apparently half their menu is "no longer available," yet they'll keep printing out brand new updated menus with all the items that they supposedly "no longer have." False advertising?...definitely.

They would also charge me slightly more than what was on the menu, then claim that the takeout menu I had was outdated. Sounds like bullshit to me.

So I pretty much avoid this pizza place for the next 1-2 months. I only ordered from there on a few rare occasions because I was unable to pack my own lunch that day and I was DESPERATELY hungry(and I usually had my coworker pick up the food, since I didn't want to face them). Guess what?...they did it again once or twice more! They neglected to make my food. They claimed that they were "out" of an item yet they never bothered to tell me this when I was on the phone with them. They also hung up on me before they got my phone # or told me the cost. So you can imagine how disgusted I got when they pulled this stunt on me again, on a day that the Kosher cafe was closed + there was no way I could get food until after work.

I got angry and through stuttering, expressed how disgusted I was. I told the guy something along the lines of, "This is the umpteenth time you've done this! How can you call this service? You claim you are 'out' of something, yet you print it on the menu. You didn't even bother to tell me if it was out, or to even tell me how much the subtotal was. This is so unprofessional!" The guy acted ignorant like he could care less. He actually said, "Whatever, I don't have to tell you how much your food costs. You should know since you always order the same thing" even though it was only the 2nd time I'd ever ordered the fish hoagie(usually I'd get the eggplant parm or mozz sticks). I told him that since they were so flippant and uncaring about my business, that I would get my entire office to stop coming here. He didn't even care!!

It pisses me off that I didn't stand up for myself in the past, i.e. I kept going back and I paid for my sandwiches all those times when I was under the pretense it was complimentary. It also pisses me off when my new coworker calls them up and goes there religiously. I told him that their service is inadequate yet he keeps defying me and going there, which makes me look "stupid." Ugh.

This is the beauty of a capitalist economy: if the service sucks, you don't HAVE to keep going there. You can pack a lunch or go somewhere else. I feelb ad for you that they fucked you over, but don't understand why after they were blatantly rude to you, you kept going back for more and expecting a different scenario? They are assholes who don't care about your business.

Also, I don't see why you care if your new coworker goes there.... and the fact that you feel he is "defying" you by going there, well, i dont know what to say about that. That's a little bit out there. It's not your place to tell coworkers where to go or what to do.

I don't mean for this post to sound bitchy and I think your opinions are generally pretty spot on, but I just think you can't be mad when you get the same treatment somewhere over and over again and are surprised when it doesn't change...

I would do the same and tell everyone I know not to give them their business. I'm not that picky with customer service but people should at least make an effort at it. I wouldn't give that place my money if it was a hassle every time.

I understand you completely here. However, please also understand that this shitty pizza place was the only place within walking distance except for the Kosher cafe that is closed half the time, and I do not usually drive to work so most days I don't have my car to drive somewhere for lunch. Usually I DO pack my own lunch, but sometimes I am running late or whatnot.

The only reasons I kept going back there, was to get my free sandwich(which I felt justified at the very least to receive) and then on occasions where I was running too late to pack a lunch and was desperately hungry on days I had to work late. But perhaps I shoulda resisted better. I'm sooooo glad I'm not nearly as much of a pushover this year!

You raise a good point. Don't worry, I don't tell him what to do...I only warned him that the pizza place is highly incompetent. The reason it bothers me is because on my last time at the pizza place when I mildly told off the ignorant manager, I threatened to tell all my coworkers to stop coming here. So when my coworker calls them from the same damn phone number that my previous coworker and I called them from for all those months, it obviously makes me look like a liar and/or a fool that no coworker will listen to.

Don't worry, you don't sound bitchy. I actually agree with you. I was talking about this with my guy friend the other day, and he told me that I acted like a freakin' doormat by going back there after they treated me like poo the first time. He said that they probably regarded me as a doormat and would laugh at me behind my back, saying "Wow we can shit on her food and STILL make her come back and pay for it!" I agreed with him and I agree with you. I'm really angry that I gave them so many chances. I'm also angry that when the asshole middle aged guy made me pay for the sandwich I shoulda gotten for free, that I paid for it instead of saying "nevermind, I don't want it then; this is false advertising" then walking out. I really hope I'm being more assertive these days! (I'd like to hope so)

NOTE: This event happened over the course of last year, but I figured I'd write about it after seeing all the McDonalds/fast food rants, and since coincidentally I'd just happened to discuss it with my guy friend only a day prior.

BINGO! That's what I've been doing...although the only people I talk to in that town are 2 coworkers and a former coworker. I tell my new coworker about my bad experiences there in an effort to get him to not want to go there(and for the past 2 months, it's been working! HAHAHA!), because if the pizza place sees the same ol number calling them as me, they'll know that my attempts to get my coworkers to avoid the place have backfired, and they'll have even more reason to laugh at me behind my back more than they probably did in the past when I went there.

well, you shouldnt have made a promise about the entire office. if i liked a place, tbh, i wouldnt care if they gave my coworker bad service if i was getting good service. especially since you said its close to work.

How are they even still in business? They've got to just generally have shitty shitty service all around.

True perhaps I shouldn't have made that promise to them, but I was angry, hot-n-bothered, and not thinking clearly when I said that. It was a very angering experience.

True, but I have a lot of friends or relatives that stopped going to certain businesses for respect of what happened to people they know. For example, my uncle has been avoiding Pitcairn Volkswagen/Audi dealership for over 20 yrs now because of the way they screwed over his brother(aka my other uncle). I've also seen people start to avoid a place because they start to think that if the place gave someone else bad service, how long will it be before THEY will get screw-up service too? For example, today I walked by one of like 5 sandwich stands in the city. I was going to get an egg-and-cheese sandwich but then I overheard a customer saying to them, "But keep in mind that this is the 5th time something like this has been messed up" so I walked on to the next sandwich stand to avoid a potential screw-up situation.

Hopefully they will go out of business soon! A new pizza place about 1-2 miles away just opened up.

Also, the town that this pizza place is located at is not nearly as prosperous and busy as it was 10+ yrs ago. This is partly due to our city's mass transit system cutbacks, which drastically reduced the times per day that the train runs through this town. There's also reduced business due to suburban sprawl and the emergence of much newer, bigger shopping centers less than a mile away.

So yeah, there's a possibility of this pizza place coming upon hard times very soon if it hasn't already. However, most of its business involves pizza delivery, and there's LOT of residential neighborhoods nearby PLUS there's a university only a mile up the road. So I doubt that the borough's decline + the opening of Tony Roni's will hurt them too drastically. But trust me I wish they would get hurt.

Oh yeah and another thing that's annoying...they require a minimum purchase of $15 in order to pay with credit card. They won't even accept credit card if the order comes to $13.55. I can understand most small mom-and-pop places requiring a minimum for using credit cards, but usually the minimum is set at $5-10...not $15. That's the #1 thing my ex-coworker used to complain about.

I honestly think they gave me worse service than average. My guy friend "Rob" claims that they probably sized me up as a pushover/doormat, due to the fact that I went back there after the first screw-up. He claims that the guys there probably laugh behind my back and think of new ways to give me bad service, just for the fun of getting away with it(makes sense, since they always appear to have a lotta spare time on their hands when I go there...i.e., the place is dead and they're slacking). Again, THANKFULLY I'm not so nice these days.

Really? Here the usual mimimum is $15 for credit card OR delivery. With SO many places here..if one makes a mistake they have ONE chance to make it up to me befoer I go somewhere else. If they are rude..they get ZERO chances

You've got to be careful when you complain about the service or food at an establishment. If you send food back or ask for some "suck-up to me" food they are likely to spit in it or something gross like that. Not worth taking that chance. Better to just move on to something else maybe?

Yeah and at my work, there's tons of other food places within a 5min drive(but only 1 other pizza place, which just opened a month ago). HOWEVER, this pizza place is usually the only place within WALKING DISTANCE, and I generally take mass transit to work because I hate driving. I don't know if they're aware that they're the only choice for me, OR if I have a lot of other options.

And in this instance, the pizza place was both mistaken AND rude. On clearly more than one occasion.

Why can't you take public transport to another restaurant then? Or catch a ride to lunch with a coworker that's driving? It doesn't seem like its worth the stress to keep going there.

In addition to above suggestion, does your office have fridge, and/or micro combo. Why not buy fave frozen pizza @ grocery store (less $$) and micro it @ work. Or, if you're not averse to eating leftovers, get a large pizza (or take advantage of 2 fer), bring it to work, and "nuke" it. Supposedly, there was a schoolteacher who brown bagged it & took public transpo. to work that later left a huge $$ gift to her college, something not to be discounted.....

IMO, you're the one doing those 's a big favor by giving them another of your money.

I haven't been there in almost 6 months now...and during the times they were screwing me over, I only went there a handful of times when I was reeeeaaaally desperate. It wasn't like I was still going in on a regular basis.

But true, I shoulda avoided them 100% with absolutely no exceptions. You guys are right.

Yes and I DO normally bring my own lunch. I'm talking about the rare few days that I would be running late, or coming to work from a friend's house(e.g., sometimes I fall asleep watching TV at M--k's place and by the time I wake up, I have just enough time to shower and head to work w/o stopping home to get something). Oh and as for the Acme Market by my work...they screwed me over too one time, so I've since avoided them...unlike the pizza place, I didn't wait for Acme to screw me 3+ times before writing them off!
