Default Diablo / ABC / Strippers

    http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/...4359344&page=1

Read the whole thing.... I got SO misquoted at the end saying 'diablo's win will inspire a lot of stripper who want to write but that's not a good thing as most are shit!"

Now would I say something like that?!!

Apologies if someone else posted this, had a quick look around but didn't see....

    ----------

From now on "Oscar winner" will be the adjective most used to describe "Juno" screenwriter Diablo Cody, but before Sunday's Hollywood award ceremony her name was always preceded by the words "former stripper."

    Tattoed Stars Make Their Mark

Soon after "Juno" became a critical and commercial success, the media latched on to Cody's G-string-to-riches story, highlighting her career on the pole and glossing over her career with the pen — she published her first book four years before the film came out.

Strippers are a diverse group of people who dance for a variety of reasons, although almost all of them boil down to money.

Since Cody took home the Academy Award for best original screenplay Sunday night, dancers in clubs and cabarets, bars and brothels across the country have looked to Cody, some hopefully and others less so.

Strippers, strippers will tell you, are not all boobs. They have brains too. And while some see Cody's win as a validation, others are less hopeful that the stripper stereotype will remain unshaken.

At FlashDancers in New York City, a recent conversation sparked by Cody's triumph turned into a lecture on the aspirations of exotic dancers and the power — even in a strip club's dark, booze-stained corners — of the American Dream.

"Just because a girl is a dancer does not mean she can't do anything else," said Morena, a 21-year-old Russian immigrant studying business, who delighted in watching Cody win the Oscar.

"I watched the Oscars and was excited when [Cody] won. There are many talented girls who want to do something else other than dance. I know many girls who need to dance just to afford school. I think it is good for dancers with dreams to see her win this," she said.

Cody — who's real name is Brook Busey-Hunt — isn't the first stripper to transition her skills into the broader entertainment industry. But many dancers with day jobs say that they routinely face prejudices and that Cody's success won't tear down those walls.

"Diablo's win is irrelevant," said Holly, 35, a stand-up comedian and stripper who once danced at New Jersey's Satin Dolls, the inspiration for the Bada Bing club in "The Sopranos."

    Fucking journalists.

"Many other strippers, however, know they will never see their name in Hollywood's lights and have resigned themselves to the neon glow of the strip club stage."

That's pretty condescending. That article was crap.

Can't wait to read your book, Mimi.

yes, it was a very condescending article. as if by becoming strippers we all stop being women or mothers or writers or musicians or whatever else we are, as if stripper becomes the primary part of what comprises us. written by a stupid guy, of course!

Book is so dark. Worried itll offend people. But had good feedback so far. Interested in what other dancers think of it, certainly!

Yeah, what a fucking idiot that guy is...

I was misquoted in a much less renowned newspaper once, it pissed me off, too. Then there was the time the newspaper said my brother, an expert canoeist (sp? I just woke up) who got sucked into a dam, was a novice and that's why he died. He died because he and the guy with him made the dumbest mistake of their shortened lives and made a wrong turn.

I tend to like journalists in 'real life', and they are usually nominally intelligent--but they do this so often, you have to wonder sometimes. Maybe it's the editors at work, trying to spice things up and fucking them up beyond repair?

I am so looking forward to your book!! You are an inspiration to those of us with stories to tell, and the glimmer of an idea to actually sit down and write them. Don't worry about the 'dark' bit. Many of my stories are dark as well. To brighten them would be lying, and doing poor justice to those whose lives I have seen ruined or curtailed.

You know, it's funny, I was the kind of stripper who was a talker. I was a shit hustler, I would sit and talk and listen and I loved that about the job. Not when the guys were drunk and incoherent, but I am a people person and thought stripping was so fascinating that way... everyone has a story...

looking forward to getting back to the states and dancing again after an 18 month break... been a long time.... may head out to different states too....

Fucking press. When they're good they're great, but when they're sloppy...

I was interviewed TWICE in person for a single article in Reuters and they got almost everything factually incorrect, and then it was posted in newspapers all over the world. So now it's history. It's in holy Reuters.

Stuff like this is why I hestitate when I read an article, unless it's a QNA article (and sometimes even then), to have an opinion based only on that article.

It's a good thing you added your comment to the article. I think if more people added comments to articles when they were misrepresented or taken out of context, some of these lazy asshole writers would tighten up.

Well, at least he quoted ME right:

"Maybe, one day I'll marry some rich man," said Chanel, a 24-year-old dancer in New York. "But for now, this is my life."

Can't wait to read your book, Mimi. Dark is good. Personally, I'd prefer a dancing memoir that acknowledges the dark side to one that gussies it all up and puts a bow on it. I thought Lily Burana glossed over WAY too much in "Strip City" and the book was kinda dull. "Candy Girl" was more upfront, and to me that made it better.

Many other strippers, however, know they will never see their name in Hollywood's lights and have resigned themselves to the neon glow of the strip club stage.

It's sort of interesting. I mean: a) perhaps the majority of strippers do not have dreams or aspirations that involve Hollywood. Some of them are interested in other alternate careers than writing or acting and fame isn't always the best measure of success (anyone want to write the journalist and call him a starfucker?). b) Like... if you're not a stripper, the book or movie deal just... drops out of the sky? MOST people won't win an Oscar. Most people won't publish a best seller. I mean, I agree that Cody's win won't effect the likelihood of most strippers winning an Oscar; I'm not sure what odds I'd place on any given, say, research assistant's or car salesperson's chance of winning an Oscar either. Like... and so? Where's the story? "Stripper Wins Oscar; Will Not Start a Cavalcade of Academy Awards for Other Strippers"? Shocking.

I was misquoted in a local rag, once. Really pissed me off. I know exactly who it was too- this douchebag who was trying to tear me away from paying customers to chat with him all night. He was pretty pissed that no one was interested in chatting ceaselessly with the cheap prick who sat right near the stage, didn't tip a dollar and acted entitled to free attention. Didn't even let on he was a journalist- not that that would have entitled him to anything anyway, or made his presence even remotely more appealing.

Nah. All strippers are frustrated actresses and models. Except the "intellectual" stripper, who is a lousy poet. And the "victim stripper" who is just a sweet girl who needs someone to marry her. Jenny obviously does not watch enough movies about strippers, and does not know what she is talking about.

It's been a long time coming, and (finally) I'm about to embark on a journey into Hollywood and am bracing myself to be known as "former exotic dancer Sunshine73".

While I started my work long before I've heard of Diablo or her work, it is encouraging and inspirational to know that if she can do it, I can too.

But I wish people would realize that while most women use dancing as a stepping stone to their goals, there is nothing wrong with being a career stripper either. As long as we're happy, who gives a shit?

I'm sorry Grace, but I find your remarks really offensive. You really pigeonhole girls. As both a victim and a lousy poet with aspirations towards hollywood, I resent the implication that one can't be all three of these. Really short sighted of you.

YAY FOR VICTIMS EVERYWHERE! BRING ON THE RICH FUCKERS!

I really do want a rich husband. My friend married a rich guy (not a stripper, though incidentally owns a great lil mynx pole in her sloane square house) and she has the best life ever. Fuck careers. I just want money and security and a fat fuck to give me cash and listen to my bad poetry and tell me I'm gonna make it one day. huh huh.

I am clearly naive in the ways of strippers and should read more male written articles to give me the real story. Thank you Grace - do you have any links? Because I can't trust your womanny, strippery opinion.

Did anyone ever watch the sopranos and wonder why all the strippers in bada bing were such fuck ups? it was the worst representation of a club I;ve ever seen. Like, only sex-trafficked illegals would get treated like that! Im thinking of the episode where that dude kills the pretty girl in the parking lot....

Yeah, I've never worked in New Jersey; but I'm pretty sure if the owner and his friends went around killing the girls in my club because he was in a bad mood... you find yourself a lot of strippers finding a new place to work. I can't imagine the earning differential would be worth that.

I'm neither a woman, nor a stripper, and I believe this qualifies me perfectly to give instruction and advice on precisely how to be a Jenny.
I think I'm correct in this, on the whole, right?

How else to perpetuate the all-important message, Sex=Death?
