    Default wig questions

Since dying my hair purple isn't very money making for me, I have some questions on wigs.
    How much was your wig?

What kind of wig is it? (ie. human hair, synthetic)

If its human hair what brand/kind is it?

Has a customer ever noticed you were wearing a wig?

I have a custom made lace scalp wig with human hair. It was pricy ($1100) and a pain in the ass to put on and remove. But once its on, it looks fabulous and no one knows its a wig at all--even in good light.

I cant believe purple hair isnt making you $$$.
One thing Ive noticed over the years - I can spot a wig a mile off but customers and maybe just men in general usually cant even spot an obvious wig.
Alternatively Ive noticed that a fair number of them will assume that hair is a wig if its just a bit unusual - dreadlocks, braids, even odd colours and so on, but I dont think anyone cares either way at the end of the day (-:

I have 2 custom made lace wigs. They are both Remy human hair and nobody knew. The straight one was $400, I got it from www.zarawigs.com and the curly one was $250, I got it from a seller on Ebay called afrotreasures.

Well, I've already picked out a wig that I like-

    http://www.cosworx.com/product.php?p...at=2450&page=1

It kinda goes with the lolita style I'm going for on stage once I start work (plus, overall length allows me to do interesting things with the style)

My only question is how to keep the damned thing on, since my hair is only about 3/4 of an inch long at the moment.

I really like a couple of the colors on the site, but instead of tampering with an already gorgeous wig (in case a different color doesn't look as cute) I'm sticking with the burgundy

lol, How do you keep it on? I've never worn a wig before, so I'm kinda clueless.

The style you've picked is just gorgeous and $40 seems pretty reasonable to me. Inside the wig there should be elastic that you pull tighter or looser to fix your head. I've worn many wigs and this is all I've ever needed. You can buy a wig cap to go underneath to keep your own hair under control but if your hair is so short you probably don't even need one.

Ugh. I suck. I paid way too much for mine, but i wanted someone local to do it for me and help me put it on for the first time.

If you want an cheaper alternative to the lace wig, you could try net weaving.

I used to wear a wig when I had short hair and the customers never noticed. Actually, a lot of the dancers were confused when I'd walk in to the club until I put my wig on and then they'd recognize me. It was about $60, synthetic. It looked pretty real because it had one of those skin toned scalps (well, skin toned if you're white anyway).

Sometimes I'd have to discreetly adjust it while dancing but I guess no one was really paying attention to my hair

My only complaint was that it got SO hot if I was working hard.

if you haven't worn wigs before, start with a (relatively inexpensive synthetic one). If you can, get one with a monofillament hairline: this allows you to part your hair anywhere and it will look like a scalp part (rather than being able to see down to the weave)-wigs are usaully given away at the hair line-style it so that the hair line is hidden (i find layered wigs are great for this)

Another couple of points i think are pretty usefull-
    - try diff styles-basic i know but so many people choose wigs that look unco on them, then blame it on the wig-ie: if your really petite-long flowing locks that are bigger than you are, are just going to look fake
    - get the wig shop to take a little of the volume out of the top (the crown of the wig)-this is where wigs often look too bulky, the wig shop or a hairdresser can sort of 'splice-cut' some of the volume out so it sits better
    - if your getting a synthetic wig-get one with some curl in it-when the fibres fray (and they will!) 'straight' hair just becomes one massive dreadlock, while if the curl matt's, you can sort of style it back adn it still looks ok.
    - don't get a wig that is a uniform shade-real hair is never one shade, make sure there are different highlights/lowlights/shading-this helps it look more natural: also, brunnte/red is ALOT less work than trying to upkeep a blonde wig (and blonde wigs have to be GREAT to not look fake)
    - i often add clip in hair extensions to 'lift' my wigs-it gives you more wear out of them, esp when the fibres have started to matt a little
    - don't wash them yourself, and DONT WASH THEM EVERYTIME YOU USE THEM!!!!!!!!!!! the less you fiddle with them (please don't brush them unless desperate-finger combing is much better for them, esp curly ones) the longer they will last! Take them to the wig shop and get them proffessionally cleaned once a month- they come back looking brand new!
    - don't be afraid to style them (ie, clip bits back etc, again, makes them look more natural)
    - please pin them! and use a wig cap or stocking- i found this out the hard way during a stage show-if you pin them, they will stay on, and you dont need to worry about them sliding anywhere (or off) !!!!!!!!

wigs can look amazing-you just need to be prepared to work a bit on them (as you would your own hair before going out on the floor). Wigs tend to look 'wiggy' when they've just sorta been slapped on and off ya go.

ooh... and u gotta learn not to flick your head around too much during dances (again, bad stage show experience, again obvious that its fake...)

I have a $35 synthetic 3/4 wig. I wear a headband to hide the seam and hold it on; in front of the headband it's my real hair, so it looks a lot more natural. It's waist-length and curly. Looked pretty at first, but it's starting to get scrotty and I CAN'T brush it. That synthetic material just breaks and tangles. I still get compliments on my "hair," and I do feel a lot more feminine with it, but the combs dig into my scalp and hurt by the end of the day and run whatever hairstyle I had with my natural hair. I don't know how much longer I'm going to keep wearing it. Glad I got it though, it was a lifesaver when I was still in shock from losing my natural hair!

Yekhefah, what brand is your 3/4 wig? Where'd you get it? How long has it lasted before starting to go south?

That's the sort of thing I'm looking to wear when I get back home, though I'm looking for more of a medium-length. I've worn elastic wigs before and they tend to shift too much when I get athletic on the stage. I'm a little nervous about it because I've never worn a wig as my "main hair" before, but I have a boy cut right now and it sure won't have grown out by June.
