    Smiley $1,000 Dollar Bill

I think it's time to bring back the $1,000 dollar bill. I can see how it would be useful in modern, middle class life (buying a car, furniture, electronics, designer clothing, etc.) and in the club. While I am happy with a fat stack of $20's I think inflation is to the point where a K-note would streamline strip club business dealings.

    What do you think?

    Several things

    1) I think they and $500 bills (William McKinley- aka "Willie Macs") are still in "circulation", but only amoungst the banks.

    2) I think 1K bills still a bit too much, even in SC environment. According to zbone pop poll, only 1.8% of customers spent an average of over $1K/visit, only 3.5% spent $500- 1K/visit. So, for 95-99% of patrons, such a bill would be out of reach & irrelevant to them.

    3) Your point about inflation has merit- it has doubled since 1984, and gone up 5 fold since 1971. Perhaps we should phase in the "Willie Macs"- they have as much relevance as Benjamin had in the early 70's.

I think it's a good idea to bring back the $500 bill. When drunk custies handle less bills, they may subconsciously think they aren't spending that much.

^ It will never happen. Although it would be a lot of fun if it did!

As I mentioned in the Secret Bunny Gift Exchange thread, right now 90% of all $100 bills are held by foreign individuals and institutions. The entire illegal drug trade exists because of benjis. Only 10% of them are held domestically, most circulating in the drug trade, and with the small number of the elderly who still mistrust banks.

Oh, and they are very useful for cash wire transfers and for SC visits, of course. But Minnow is right -- it's the rare customer who regularly spends more than $1K in a club, and those who do tend to rely to some degree on CCs. The thing is, though, from a practical standpoint, benjis are so much easier to handle compared to the Jackson $20s -- the latter are, obviously, five times bulkier.

The real reason the larger denominations existed in the past was the absence of credit cards, wire transfers of large sums, checks and revolving credit accounts. You needed cash to do business. There was also an active barter economy and gold was still accepted as a legitimate currency (paper and coin currency was a proxy for what the U.S. government held as gold reserves until we decided to throw that system out the window.)

Almost nobody uses large-denomination cash today. The reasons are the same -- credit cards, wire transfers, checks and the availability of revolving credit -- along with the incredibly convoluted Internal Revenue Service system which requires receipts for every single sneeze. People who have legitimate large-denomination transactions usually have a keen interest in documenting them. The opposite is true of entrepreneurs in the drug trade.

Perhaps the best thing to do is demand a lowering of the criteria for issuing AMEX Centurion cards (the black ones). That would have a more immediate effect in SCs, I think.

TOO, you bring up a very good point. I guess I'm a credit card novice. I just got my first Amex a few months ago and apparently thats not even considered a credit card (it's a charge card, go figure!).

But I have to wonder, doesn't Japan have currency that goes up to 10,000 yen? There must be some use for big bills, right?

^ Well, not exactly. ¥10,000 = $90.50 or so (fluctuates with the currency markets.) So that's closer to the total somebody might carry with them in smaller U.S. currency.

While I'd love a 1k bill, don't you all think if a guy had one at the club he'd hold it over all our heads, like Ooooh, who wants to earn this?

On the other hand, a trillion dollar bill...

I don't give a shit about all the reasons why it supposedly won't happen. I want a real live 1000 dollar bill.

Is this an official change of request?

It's legal tender and all, but they are worth more as collectibles, between $2,000 and $6,000 depending on year of issue and condition, I think.

Only one problem. Grover Cleveland? This guy was so massive that he had two celestial moons orbiting him by his second term. The East Coast Atlantic tide never went out.

The $5,000 denominations are much rarer and worth considerably more, but at least they have sufficient good taste to have James Madison on the obverse.

What can you DO with a 5k bill? If you rolled into the car/Coach/Lush store, would they take it?

ETA:obviously other than hang it on the wall or put it in the bank.

They have to take it. It's still legal currency, even though it's officially out of circulation.

But you would be crazy to do it. It's worth at least $25,000 as a collector's item. If you spend it or put it in the bank, it's only worth face-value. But you would make the car dealer/Coach store/Lush people very, very happy.

Think of what would be running through the bank manager's mind at the sight of this gorgeous girl standing there holding a 1934 mint $5,000 bill and asking to deposit it. Who are you? Do you work in the entertainment industry? Do you own a cosmetics chain? Are you married to Bono? Will you marry me?

That would be funny as hell. When I find a 5k bill, I won't deposit it then. (not that I would-I save my 2 dollar bills, too!)

Nah, I still like the monogrammed MCWM purse/wallet combo with a nice cashier's check inside.

But in a pinch, a real US$1k bill will do

    Interesting Statistic!!

Also, the guys would most likely have to break the 1000 bill into 100s to give to us anyway, unless they really really liked us!

I've lost 100 bills before and was really pissed, I wouldn't want to risk loosing 1000.

*although recently I did find a "lost" 100 bill in my wallet....seeing as I am totally a broke ass bartender until Summer, this is AWESOME!!*
