Default Consumer Reports: Best and Worst cars

I like to read consumer reports because 1. cars are really expensive and 2. I am a safety freak. The annual auto issue came in the mail and here are some of the highlights:

Dodge viper is the highest rated performance car of the year.
Honda accord is best overall model.

Safety: "ESC is... the greatest advance in auto safety since the safety belt."
"If all cars had ESC (electronic stability control) some 10,000 lives a year would be saved."

    Greenest car is Toyota prius.
Best upscale sedan is Infiniti G35 (as usual.)

Most costly model due to maintainance and depreciation is Mercedes SL550
There is a booger on my keyboard.
Best handling and fastest is Porcshe 911carrera S
Extended warranties are a poor value for the cost on both cars and almost every other product there is.

    Honorable goes to Nissan Atima.
Dishonorable mention goes to Kia rio due to exceptionally poor reliability and safetly.
    Highest rated manufacturer overall: Honda

If anybody wants information on a specific new or used vehicle I can post it.

Chevy Aveo has poor reliability, poor safety and lowest rated customer satisfaction.

Toyota Yaris has high reliability and highest cost efficiency.

Smartcar not reviewed in this issue.

BMW X3 got a "recommended" checkmark because reliability has improved.

BMW X5 is the safest vehicle ever tested by the Institute of Highway Safety.

    No problem!!!

VW toureg, Audi A8 and Range Rover all had the poorest reliability rating,
Toureg owners reported low satisfaction, and very costly but impressive off road. "Handling is responsive but didn't shine at the limits... The V8 is brawnier but bumps up the price considerably. Cargo area is modest. Many controls are complicated."

Audi A8 also costly but above average customer satisfaction. Stiff ride but more responsive than other luxury sedans. "The interior is very quiet, with impeccable fit and finish. The front seats are extremely comfortable and supportive, and the rear seat is expansive. Multi Media Interface driver-interaction system is somwhat easier to use than BMW's akward iDrive, but not by much."

Range rover and range rover sport were average to below average customer satisfaction, but noted for being very comfortable inside and good offroad.

Volkswagen Jetta is agile, comfortable and crash test results are impressive. The one thing about volkswagen is they always report more problems and repairs per 100 vehiclehan other luxury vehicles. VW jettas are on the list of least recommended used cars to buy.

SmartCar is a European model, so CR usually doesn't review Euro only models

I'm curious what it says about this year's Subaru Impreza?

I tend to take CR with a grain of salt though....

    Comments:

Consider American-built unless you care only about yourself and not your neighbors, and that ultimately affects your job. Quality has been improving greatly for over twenty years now. Admittedly it used to be very poor.

Toyotas vs Hondas. The cheap Hondas rust a lot faster then the cheap Toyotas. You think they know about road salt in Japan or Korea? We're experts on that in Upstate NY.

A car is OLD a lot longer than it is NEW. Snazzy doesn't look so good in the repair shop or with rust bubbes.

Consider your financial risk when buying an expensive car. Insurance will pay for crash repairs, not the difference between the retail or book values before and after. (EG - You come back to your new Lexus after your Target shopping spree to find its rear end crushed in; your insurance agent tells you next week that essentially that incident alone cost you $8000, though your car will look as good as new.' Hell! It is new!!! Well, it was new.)

For you maintenance people who hate rust, consider buying a little can of Rust Bullet instead of a little can of Duplicolor primer bottle.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

I agree. I would take a corvette over a viper any day of the week and they don't take some things into considerations. They shake like they're going to fall apart at high speeds but consumer reports probably never drives them fast enough to know.

You can check were your car was built on the msrp sticker. My last honda was built in Ohio.

And yes Cam, I ate the booger. Just kidding... I fed it to the dog. Impreza, Prius, and extended cab trucks information soon! Sorry, I have to hurry to a 5 o'clock appt.

Z4 roadster was noted for requiring the LEAST cost of maintainance and repairs of all vehicles- an average total of $900 over the first 5 years. Consumer reports recommended. They complimented the standard electronic stability control and traction control but "the Z4 is not as agile as the porsche boxster or honda S2000. Abover average reliability and satisfaction.

    Recommended compact trucks:
Honda Ridgeline 15 mpg. "Agile handling and a ride thats supple and steady."
Nissan Frontier 15 mpg. "Quick and nimble with a stiff though tolerable ride."
Toyota Tacoma17 mpg. "Fuel economy is competetive and overall handling is sound."
Ford Explorer Trac 14 mpg. "Full time four wheel drive is a plus.

    Recommended full size trucks:
Chevy Silverado 14mpg, "rode stiffly but could haul 2200 lbs."
GMC Sierra 14mpg, "New truck is more responsive and a steadier ride."
Ford F150 13 mpg, "Sound handling and fairly stiff ride. Cab is roomy with some neat optional features such as movable overhead storage bins, a spring assisted tailgate, and a power-opening center rear window panel."

i drive a toyota matrix and i luurrvvee it. i mean, sure i'd LIKE to have a snazzier more expensive car. but, i can't beat the quality for that cost.

it's roomy, it gets great gas mileage, it's pretty sturdy, i can throw my paintings in the back when i flip the seats forward, and it aint bad looking. i signed up to consumer reports before buying it and the reliability ratings were super high.

From what I've heard the Viper is great until you try to getit to turn at speed; vibration I haven't heard about yet, but that doesn't sound good. both are well above my risk-of-loss limit.

Yes, I know there is quite a crossover in where cars are built and which company owns how much of which other. Final assemly plants are not the only places that cars are built in. Also some of mine use major Japanese components. Finally a lot of the cost of owning a car is in the maintenance and fuel. We're alerady shipping jobs overseas, but let's keep some of our resources on this side of the big waters.
