Default The Give Back and Good Deeds Thread

I wanted to start a thread that is for us to talk about the little or big things we do every day to help other people. I want to hear about the little positive things we do each day that are meant to enhance or asist someone or something other than yourself. I don't think it has to be huge or monumental...just sort of nice And if you can't think of something for today, maybe make the effort tomorrow ?

Ok I will start . And this is small so no one make fun of me please. In the last day or so, I did my mom's laundry for her because I knew she was tired. I also sliced all the bell peppers for her because I know she hates doing it. I held the door open for a guy carrying a standard poodle at the animal clinic.

I'm hoping for this to be a nice thing so no flames please.

Beautiful thread. Hmm...I just finished a volunteer position coaching 3rd and 4th grade basketball because they had no coach and I didn't want the kids to lose their entire season. (especially, since it was the first time playing for about 8 of the kids) I adopted my baby (my kitten) who was violently abused for the first 4 months of her life, causing her severe nasal problems, the loss of her left eye and lack of the ability to properly vocalize. (she can only squeak like a mouse) TODAY: I shoveled the driveways of the elderly people on my block. (We just got 2 feet of snow)

Right on ! It's great that you went out in the snow and shoveled driveways. I have never shoveled a walk. There's no need here obviously. It seems like hard work.

I was late for class and it was raining, but I let someone else take a parking spot because they were waiting longer.

I held open the door for a girl with two big dogs.

To make a long story short, I was in church last Sunday and a man I barely know (he knows I am a single mom) gave me $93 out of nowhere as a random act of kindness. The sermon that day was about being compassionate towards your neighbor, and he wanted to be a good neighbor so he gave me some money. Which I felt silly about taking, as I normally don't take handouts, but I am in debt and he insisted that I should have it.

So I that day I went to Blockbuster. I saw that behind me in line was a young woman who was renting 3 DVDs. When it was my turn in line, I slipped the cashier $15 and whispered to him that I wanted to do a secret random act of kindness and surprise the girl behind me by paying for her DVD rentals. He looked at me like I was a kook, but hey someone did something nice for me, so I wanted to do something nice for someone else.

And I made sure to write that man a thank-you note too. I know that his kindness will come back to him when he least expects it.

I don't mean to sound snarky, but why don't people do nice things for people in general without needing a reason to so they can talk about it online? I mean, isn't the point of good deeds to be nice without getting something back, even if it is someone going, 'Aw, that was nice of you!'.

I mean, yeah, I donate to charity, open doors for people, help the blind cross the road, and even make sure my deaf neighbour has someone to talk to every day... but I kinda don't really talk about it unless people ask or it happens to matter. It's just nice to do nice things. Not for any reason or gratification.

I don't think 'Pay it Forward' should even have to exist. Someone has to do something nice for you before you'll do something nice for someone else? That's not charity, that's greed.

I think the point of this thread is to remind the people who read it to do small, nice things for other people. It's not about bragging so much as about accountability. Take, for example, me. I don't think I did anything nice for anyone today. Well, I took a bottle of wine over to my house. But it's only even, because she lets me smoke her weed. Now that I've read this thread, I'll probably be more conscious tomorrow of the things I could be doing for other people.

Besides...is a good deed worth less based on the emotion's of the recipient? Like, if you just give a hamburger to a homeless guy to show off, does it nourish him less? That's a threadjack, but your post was a bit of a threadjack, too.

^^^I dont think thats the point of the thread. Ive never heard the expression pay if forward before the random thread. I dont think I like it... /-: I do believe that goes around comes around but you dont do things in order to get things, its more a case of treating people like you like to be treated IMO.

I really like Sunshines story though!

I am in the process of giving away almost everything I own. Some things are quite nice and I could sell them but Im either giving it to people who I think would really appreciate it or posting it to people I think would really dig it even if I dont really know them.
Edited to add - when I was younger it was such a big deal saving to buy some of these things but Im not so poor now, I dont need the $ I could make from selling that badly, better to share it out...

Im giving away 10 hula-hoops this week too because its fun making them and its fun watchng everyone hoop! (-:

Okay, then to make it feel better for myself, I'll say somethign nice someone did for me that made me feel special because they cared.

MsQwerty gave found out I collect silver and gave me an entire box of silver she'd collected for years because she didn't need it anymore. There was a bunch of cool stuff in it. Broken chains and things. All silver. That was nice.

And MsQ, Pay it Forward is even a movie.

The point of the thread is just to talk about something nice for a change . I like hearing about random acts of kindness or volunteer projects and such. It's not a contest. It's nice . I understand that people do nice things all the time and don't expect recognition. Great. But in this thread I just want to talk about the nice things we do for each other. It makes me feel good to read the responses and if people do nice things tomorrow because of the thread then that too makes me happy

Please , if you think this is silly or whatever, then don't read the thread but I just really want to keep it positive. Pretty please ??

Pay it forward was a great book...you should read it if you havent yet.Very Inspirational. Movie was ok...book was better.

I didnt do any good deeds today. Boo me. I just bought pet food, had sex on the swing(hubby wanted to before we took it down),made dinner and now I'm working

I'll try to do one tomorrow

OOO..but I DID call back someone I know and give them sassysummers webpage so they can buy a pole and tell them about my webcam site so they can try it too. Does that count as a good deed since I hate the phone?

Turned in a $50 Kroger card I found in the parking lot. Could have kept it and bought a lot of groceries, but the girl scout in me refused to let it pan out that way.

I like this thread, there's nothing wrong with it whatsoever, and a lot that's right.

We don't have to brag, we can just share stories of things we have done, in hopes that we will all be motivated to keep doing things like this. It's selfish in that it makes us feel good to do these things sometimes.

One of the most selfish nice things I ever did was in Daytona once. I was out running errands on the biggest Race Day of Race Week, trying to get done before the entire city was gridlocked with race fan traffic after the race was over. I was driving on a road far away from any residential or commercial development, where they had all these traffic markers and lane guides and detour barricades and such, ready for the oncoming hours-long traffic jam.

I was just congratulating myself on having avoided this nightmare, on my way home to relax, when I saw his old lady walking slowly on the other side of the divider, going the other way. She was wearing a sort of shift/gown thing, not attire for cruising traffic lanes in the boonies. She did not belong out there in the middle of fucking nowhere. Then as I slowed to look, I saw a hospital plastic wrist band on her wrist.

    Wrong...

So I turned around and pulled up and asked her where she was going. She was trying to get home, but couldn't really tell me where it was.

    Alzheimer's.

So I went looking for a cop, I had seen a few cars waiting to help the oncoming jam. Found one and he had me wait with her in my car while they tried to find out where the hell she belonged. Meanwhile the race let out and the roads were jammed. I think the poor lady took a poo, because it started to smell a bit. This is when I finally gave up and went and got the cops and told them I was outta there, please take the poor lady off my hands.

It did take me 2-3 hours to get home, but I was glad I did it.

Today I did a couple little selfish things, but I can't say yet what they were.

Wow that is really really nice. I have a big aversion to poo and I don't think I could have handled it if someone did one in my car. You must be a saint.

I haven't done much today yet, I've only been up an hour. So far I made my sick bf tea in bed and rubbed vapo rub on his chest to make him feel better. However when I was getting out of bed I accidentally kicked him in the balls so really I was just trying to make it up to him. Will try and do something else selfless for him later on.

Not really, that's when I decided I'd had enough of waiting with her in my car. 45 minutes or so after I picked her up and brought her to the cops was enough, already--I am not by nature patient with strangers having me siting around waiting. The smell clinched it. She must have been wearing an adult diaper though, thank god--there was no nasty mess.

Yeah, I thin the mess might have put you off good deeds for life!

I like this thread a lot. It gives me warm fuzzies and makes me want to go change the world for good. I think I liked it better before Djoser talked about poo, though.

All I usually do are small things, holding doors, telling people to have a nice day, moving shopping carts that people left sitting around where they could blow into a car, etc but I know it all has a positive effect so I feel good. I'll be extra conscious of my "leave the world a little better than you found it" today.

I understand why you are saying here. It's nice to be nice. I do nice things for people every day too without expecting anything in return. But I feel that this is not a thread about "bragging". It's a thread to inspire others to do acts of kindness for others.

Have you ever read "Embraced by the Light" by Betty J. Eadie? She explains in this story how your actions have a "ripple effect" on others. If you do an act, whether it be good or evil, it will ripple out and eventually it will "ripple back" to you. We inspire and influence others with our acts, and if we are kind to others it inspires others to be kind as well, and we all will have joy. It's a beautiful story.

Anyhow...I like hearing these stories. It's good to see love spread.

This is a really nice idea for a thread!! I don't think it's really about "bragging". I enjoyed reading all your posts so I thought I would share too.

Over the weekend I took care of my friend and her baby who both had the stomach flu REALLY bad...even if it meant that I am now sick with the stomach flu.

Along with the package I sent last week to my hubby in Iraq I sent three other packages to guys who NEVER get anything in the mail.

Last week I left a $25 tip and a nice note for a waitress even though my bill was $6. The table next to me made her cry and I could tell she was new. Wish I could have left her more...but hopeful that helped her feel a little better.

I've not been out of my home in almost a week.

But I wanted to share something nice that was done for me.

The only person IRL who knew I was pregnant came over, cooked for me, and put my laundry away, and just generally straightened up.

The girl I rent a room to did my dishes, b/c she "could tell I wasn't feeling good".

Tons of people on the internet prayed for me, shared in my joy, and then shared their sympathies. That really made me feel good.
