Default How do you care for clip in extensions?

I've wore clip ins on and off for a couple weeks dancing and I'm thinking its about time I washed them. I'm taking a break from dancing for a bit and I'd like to wear them out without reeking of cigarettes and body spray.

They are human hair so my stylist told me to just wash them like I would my regular hair every now and then. Do I just wash them super gently with shampoo and hang them up to dry? I usually just use Joico Kpack products. Is my regular shampoo safe or do I need something specifically for extensions?

Also, can anyone suggest a good heat protecting spray for them? I try to avoid heat styling as much as possible but I need to flat iron them a little bit to blend them with my hair. I've heard CHI are good but theres several different ones.

I'm totally hair-stupid and know nearly nothing about hair products, etc so I really appreciate any suggestions.

I wash my extensions every 3 or 4 wears with baby shampoo, its the gentlest I have found.

You really shouldn't heat style at all, or minimally. Extensions really aren't made to hol dup to it.

Heat protectant sprays really do nothing. They make the hair LOOK shiny and healthy, but the hair is just as damaged, which is especially bad for extensions.

Try ways of non-heat styling. I put sponge rollers in my damp extensions, and let them sit overnight.

To straighten, I roll in jumbo velcro rollers.

I have to heat style otherwise my extensions are pretty obvious since my hair is flaaaat. I do it as minimally as possible though, like only the very top layer of hair in most spots where my natural hair ends. I hate doing it. I should try doing your sponge roller method, it would probably help blend more with my hair. I'm so used to stick straight Morticia Addams hair that anything different looks just weird on me

I'm running out to buy baby shampoo in a bit though

^That's funny...if I wear my extensiosn straight, the extensions look extremely obvious.

The only way it looks natural is if I curl my hair, and the extensions.

    Weird lol.

When I wore clip ins i just washed them like regular hair with my regular shampoo and conditioner, and made sure I brushed them. I hung them over the shower to dry and flat ironed them all the time which didn't really do too much damage.

What?! I've never met anyone who used clip ins that didn't heat style them. I've never cared b/c its not my hair. So I leave the curling iron on them extra long so it lasts longer, who cares if I fry the fake (by fake I mean human hair thats not my own) hair? I can replace them for under a $100. I put them in a ponytail holder, wash with my reg shampoo and conditioner and lay them flat to dry on a towel.

I use kids shampoo with conditioner in one and it's worked great. I also heat-style the hell out of the extensions and I've had both sets of mine for much longer than six months. They hold up very well, IMO, and you don't have to handle them with too much care. I typically throw mine in a pile when I take them off and don't even look at them until it is time to get ready for work again.
