    Default Living in California.....

It has always been my dream to move to California. And now that I've decided to dance (which is substantially easier to land a gig than a normal 9-5) I would like to move there. Anyone here ever moved from NYC to CA? I would love any advice from anyone whose ever lived or currently lives in CA. Where is a nice, affordable area? Where are good places to dance? Etc. Thanks in advance for your help!

    Affordable? California?

I'm sorry, I can't help you. Those two don't go together. It's not an ideal place to dance either.

Actually it can be if you're is used to paying NYC prices.

Not affordable, but I love the whole area from Long Beach down to San Diego... affordable it is not, but it still feels like a little slice of paradise on earth.

Born and raised in Jamaica, Queens, NYC.

Been in San Diego about 7 years now.

So far so good, I love it here.

No idea on where to dance of course, my thighs are bit big to be a stripper

Not really. They are about equal for some cities, but an article I read not too long ago stated that LA and San Fran beat out NY for high cost of living. Don't underestimate the cost of CA.

I'm looking to pay no more than $1400/month rent. If that helps anything.

"Nice affordable area" and "good places to dance" are incompatible with California.

What is it about California that appeals to you? Because these days, the appeal is largely mythology.

I was thinking either San Diego (I have a cousin residing at the Naval Base there) or West Hollywood. Unless someone can suggest anything else.

I do NOT recommend dancing in OC/LA right now, or living here. The housing market is horrendous and the rent sucks balls. The area is beautiful and that's about it. Yek moved, Alexxa moved, I'll be moving as soon as I have my B.A. That should tell you something.

I'd try San Diego. We have many members on the board who LIKE their city who do not plan on moving soon. That should also tell you something.

Yekh can tell you that Hollywood is HORRIBLE to dance in. San Diego might be better slightly, but California as a whole hasn't really gotten rave reviews for dancing and money.

Both places will be extremely expensive. Check out craigslist for rent prices. I also want to make sure you're aware that California has a lot of little taxes here and there. Plus make sure you research car insurance and registration rates. They charged R $120 to register his $500 car.

I live in the valley. Love it. Couldn't imagine living in Hollywood, yuck. Too busy for my tastes but if you are from NYC you might like the chaos. I agree that the area from Long Beach--> San Diego is great. And for $1400 you will get a nice place in those areas.

She just answered that : West Hollywood or San Diego area.

OP: Have you even considered anything in NorCal as well? It's gorgeous, just a bit colder in the winter.

San Diego is pleasant if you like the exact same weather every day of the year (I know a lot of people do) and if you have a lot of money to live on. I've never danced in San Diego.

WeHo is lovely if you don't mind the traffic, the L.A. scene, the smog, and an exorbitant cost of living. By L.A. standards it's a pretty pleasant place to live, but it still has all the baggage that comes with life in Los Angeles. There are no good clubs in WeHo; there are two nude clubs and one bikini club, but they all really suck. You'd have to dance elsewhere in L.A., and yeah, everyone's heard all I have to say about L.A. dancing already.

LOL. I'm glad I posted here first then. California to me seems like heaven on earth. Warm weather, culture, major city; but just the allure of it all. That's mostly it.

If that's what you want, go to Austin. It's the new California.

Yeah, after living there, it's just not worth it to me. Even SoCal. Nice place to visit, but never want to live there.

I used to live in a bit east of West Hollywood for half a year. It's ok too but aint worth the price(for straight men)>

Forget dancing, the real money in San Diego for hot chicks is promo modeling.

Austin is great for Texas, I go there every so often, but as I am part fish, I need to be on the ocean.

I lived in So Cal from the time I was born until I was 22. I like to go visit my family there but I would NEVER live there again. I think it was slowly starting to kill my soul.

I love SD! I don't think it's too expensive but I've also never lived anywhere else (and I don't plan to). For $1400, you can get a very nice place (we're talking 1 bdrm, right?) I grew up in the north coastal areas of San Diego and I think they're a lot more laidback (Cardiff, Encinitas, Carlsbad). If you want to be closer to downtown, South Park is nice, OB can be nice (if you get a garage or something, it's crowded), and some areas of North Park. Oooh, Golden Hills appeals to me as well.

1 bedroom for $1400? Oh hell no. LOL, sorry. You can rent a whole house on the uber nice side of town in a gated community for that here!

I live in SD too and I love it. Yes you can find a 1 bedroom for $1,400 a month. I live at the beach and pay about $1,100 and work (strip) about 4 days a week. Craigslist or www.sdreader.com would help.
