Default whats wrong with my computer? grr

my computer is less than 2 years old.. i got in in (i think) october 06. the past few days the fan will start to get really loud. the first time, i restarted my comp and it was fine. just now, i blew in it, and it got quieter, but still louder than normal.

tell me how to fix it

Fan's do that. The bearings go bad, in part due to dirty, in part due to wear, or the grease/oil dries up or leaks out. They will tend to quiet down after they warm up and run for a while, but eventually the solution is replace the fan. The problem is... which fan? If it's a fan thermally bonded to a chipset it can be semi-difficult to replace; if it's just a case fan easy and cheap; if it's a desktop power-supply fan usually it's easiest to just replace the power-supply.

How loud is the fan getting and is it blowing air too? What kind of computer? Are those the only problems?

    Sorry for all the questions!

I usually ignore them for a while unless it gets very loud.

If the fan is spinning you are generally fine , and it will probably quiet down some as it warms up and the oil/grease in the bearings spreads. But eventually it may get noisier, slow down or stop. Depending on what fan it is, the effects of a stopped fan can be little (an increase in your computers temp) to damaging (e.g., CPU, Mobo chipset, or graphics card overheating).

Do you still have warranty on it? And you're not having any trouble turning it on and off?

I work on quite a lot of Dell computers that have had this problem and it usually has turned out to be a problem with the motherboard.

Yep, again normal for a noisy fan. But as for Best Buy helping you ... hahaha (you were kidding about that part, right? )

It's most likely the fan in the power supply. Turn the CPU around. Does the noise come out the vent on the top of the back?

Replacing the power supply is relatively cheap and easy. It has several power plugs that go to different places inside the comp, and about four screws secure it to the case. If you REALLY don't like the idea of changing it, a computer place should be able to replace it in a matter of minutes.

It could be really dusty inside causing it to warm up. Take a vacuum cleaner or napkin and get rid of the dirt and see if that helps. Or maybe put computer under the desk if it is sitting on the top.

If you really want to investigate things, turn the computer on with the case off. Turn off each fan one at a time with your finger or a computer program (I used speedfan(free)) and if you feel its worth the cost and effort spend the $10-$50 to buy and change the fan.

ok, it's the 2nd fan. it wasnt doing it but it just started again the other day. i even turned my computer off while i was at my day job, and then at work last night, and left it off, which i never do. i felt to see which fan was doing it, and it wasnt the one on top, it was the 2nd one.

eta: im assuming it is. the first one isnt blowing much air and the 2nd is blowing a lot more. so i would guess that means the 2nd one is going faster...

BAH! it's doing it worse now! it keeps starting and stopping.

my brother's coming by this afternoon because he said he can take the back off and clean it, and that vacuuming it was pointless because that won't do anything. he said if he needs to he can replace my power supply.. thank god for having a brother who knows that stuff because to me,strange noises=new computer time.

When fans go bad with noise the beariing is worn ad the fan's axis is hitting the loose bearing fast enough to make some noise. If you can get to the fans when the machine is turned off, you can see if there is side to side play/motion. If so , that is the bad fan. Do not blow of any of the fans because you can cause them to spin at excessive speed and likely damage the bearings. If the bearing is bad, and loose it will get worse, likely it will not sieze up and not turn at all. If it stops turning, your machine wil heat up. If it is not loose but still noisy, your fan bearing is bad and it may well sieze up and stop the cooling fan.

Look for a small prorgam called "motherboard monitor" that you can install to monitor your temperatures until you get it figured out and fixed.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

It's usually easy to take the case off. I meant vacuuming with the case off. Turn the computer on with the case off and see if you can pinpoint the fan to blame.

Well assuming brother is far away, how about blunt kitchen knife or a paperclip?

A few cases come out without use of a screwdriver.
