    Default San Diego Peeps

I'm headed out to SD on Tuesday of next week to check out a job my friend is offering me at a new bar he's opening in the gaslight district. Of course this would involve a move from AZ and I'm just wondering how you all like the weather, lifestyle, cost of living etc. I've been to SD but am not familiar with the area....I was looking around Craigslist at apts and stuff but I don't know where anything is . Any help or thoughts would be appreciated

SD is pimp. All the benefits of SoCal with less of the problems of LA and no Housewives of Orange County.

Weather can't be beat. I can surf and snowboard in the same day during the winter(and I do once every year as a ritual).

Everybody complains about the cost of living but coming from NYC, it wasn't a shock to me. If we former poor military scrubs can scrape along, most people can. It's expensive but not the worst in the country by far. At my salary, I would live like a King in Arizona, however.

If you tell us more about what kind of neighborhoods you like I can tell you more about the offerings here.

By far my favorite place in the city is where I live, Pacific Beach. We are the "cool" part of San Diego, right on the water, not terribly expensive, traffic can be a pain in the mornings, we have the other major nightlife district, etc.

And the coolest sw people by far live here in SoCal.

These SD threads are making me wonder what kind of fabulous place I could get for half of my rent somewhere else.

There are so many areas of San Diego and they are all different in their own way. It might help to narrow it down if you tell us what you'd be looking for? Like, a surfer town, artsy town, city hubub... how far you'd be okay driving to get to the gaslamps, what you'd be willing to spend on rent... stuff like that.

The weather is beautiful. You can pretty much wear the same stuff year-round (save for the middle of winter for a month or so) plus or minus a sweater. Oh, and I'd suggest making sure the place you move to has parking... especially if you choose to move to a place like Pacific Beach or Ocean Beach. Oh, and check out Hillcrest. I really like the bars and restaurants in that area of town and it just seems like a pretty place all around (it is also known as the gay area of town, fyi). Oh, and be wary of anything too close to El Cajon Blvd... especially east of the 805. Also, I wouldn't move to City Heights. Some places are better than others around there (my bf lives there), but it's not a place that I would chose for myself.

    ^^What they said.

I live near Sh0t and I love it here. The weather is always nice (save for maybe a few rainy days in the winter) and overall the people are friendly. I can support muself and my kid by stripping 4 days a week.

I think your friend's bar is lovated in the Gaslamp district. Is that right? That is downtown.

North County is nice, but would be far from downtown. Stay away from east county (El Cajon, Santee). If I were working downtown I'd live in PB or OB, maybe even Old Town. (OT is not at the beach).

I've lived in Clairemont, which is a more reasonable area. It is close (15 min drive) to everything, and quiet.

I've lived in Point Loma (which was OK...too noisy from overhead airplanes).

And PB (my favorite so far).

I'd also like to live in North County (La Jolla or north) but the cost of rent may go up a bit.

    Hope this helps.

I am boring. I like it quiet but I would still like to be a reasonable distance from work. Say 15 minutes ? Being close to the beach would be cool but not a deciding factor. I'm going from living alone in a 3 bedroom house that I own. For rent I'd be willing to spend $1200-$1600? I'm not sure how much I might be making yet. Oh and I'm a freak about safety. I tend to attract psychos and turn normal men into them. Neat, huh ?

Oh, and you girls that dance, how's the money ? I'm told it's not as good as AZ but latey, it seems everyones earnings are down. My gf who lives in SD comes back here to work once a month. That's not a good sign.

I'm excited to check it out next week. I'll only be there for a day but it should be nice to get way.

    Thanks guys

Is it just you? Hubby, pets, kids?

As for dancing, it's gone up and down over the years, but I've always been able to pay the bills on no more than 3 days/ nights a week. I think Golden Hills and Southpark are relatively quiet and safe areas and they aren't too far from the gaslamp district. You should PM TigersMilk. She's been keeping an eye out for places because she's interested in moving to a new area. She might have some good tips or advice for you.

Point loma is also very nice and tucked away yet very close to downtown. Ask your friend if there is going to be parking available and if you have to pay how much will it be per month/week/day. Parking downtown is hell if you don't have a permit or guaranteed cheap place to park. It also can get quite expensive parking downtown.

I'd list all the places for you to look for but you'd have to give more detail as to what types of places are good for you. As in gated or not, sq footage, drive times, close to beach, etc.

The weather awesome. Its winter still and it was 72 today with a little breeze. Its pretty much nice weather all year round.

The dancing money highly depends on what club you work at. Do you prefer topless or nude?

TM- I prefer topless but money is money so I wouldn't rule out nude. And no hubby or kids , just me and my Pom.

San Diego is beautiful and the weather is great. You really do pay for it, though. The lifestyle can range from surfer beach bums/ocean beach hippie/college student to a yuppie's dream. There are a lot of bars, clubs and live music venues.

www.city-data.com is great for researching neighborhoods you want to learn more about.

This thread is making me sad. I've been running the numbers and I may not be able to afford a home here.

But if you are renting, why not?

I have lived in San Diego county my entire life. I grew up in north county, which is about 40 minutes from downtown SD, and it's a pretty chill place. Kinda far away from the cooler areas, but more affordable if you want to be near the coast. My girls live literally on the beach for about a grand for studios/1 br's. I live now in downtown SD in a studio and I pay $925 a month.

As far as clubs go, you have a lot of options available. Like others have said, it's very feasible for a dancer to support herself by dancing 3 days per week, I've been working 2 days per week for the past year.
