    Lightbulb Suggestions?

Hi all. I'm a currently retired dancer, but I assist at a pole dance class in my town.

The main instructor asked me tonight if I want to choreograph a routine to teach the class (YES!), but I'm stuck on song selection.

When I work, I dance to mostly harder stuff...Manson, NIN, RevCo, Jet, Rage Against the Machine...those are my typical choices. My music is not appropriate for this class.

The girls are mostly young; early 20's. I asked them what they preferred to dance to, and they all just shrugged. So, no help there.

I'm thinking that something electronic is my best bet with them (and the lyrics can't be too racy or "offensive"). They're very much beginners; medium tempo...not too fast, but not too slow either. They don't have the muscle strength/control for extremely slow and graceful dancing yet.

Any ideas? This is way out of the realm of what I would normally choose.

    Thanks!!

What about Tool? You can't go wrong with Tool... something like Sober? That would probably be more your style and is pretty well-known/accepted by most early-20's, too...

or A Perfect Circle's cover of Lennon's Imagine? I'm only suggesting something more in the vein of your 'genre' because if YOU like it and can move to it, you'll have more fun/enthusiasm/easier time conveying these stylistic points to your proteges.

    Hi, Colette.

Thanks for the suggestion. I, personally, would love dancing to Tool...these girls, though...not so much.

It's not even just them. The gym owner makes us call it "Pole Aerobics" and she has The Ten Commandments posted on the wall. I highly suspect that electric guitars offend this woman. LOL

I'll keep it in mind, though, because it is more my style and not as dark as my usual stuff.

oh. ok... have you heard Engine Room's Perfect Lie (the Nip/Tuck theme song) the gabriel/dresden mix- it's gorgous, haunting, somewhat electronic, sensual as hell, and much softer...

The Gotan Project also do a GREat version of 'whatever lola wants' (it's like techno meets a parisian cafe meets damn yankees)

Some Enigma or Delerium, maybe? It's slower, but not too slow (well some of it is a bit faster), and it has real power to it, if you pick the right songs. No electric guitars or nasty sex vocals to offend her.

Though it is considered 'fuck music' by many people, to be blunt (sorry), she might still dislike it if she's really anti-sex,lol...

There's some great techno remixes of Sarah McLaughlin's (sp? it's too late/early, I am tired from work lol) songs that are sensuous but have enough power to make them inspiring. Avoid the Tiesto remixes they will be too fast. The Delerium remix of 'Silence' or 'Fear' would be perfect, I would think.

Now everyone who knows Djoser is rolling their eyes, since I have posted about those two songs a gazillion times. Sorry, as i said I am tired from work and my imagination is shot.

Oooh, wait--'Slide In' by Goldfrapp is fucking hot. Except she might think it's about you know what...

I really appreciate the suggestions. Thanks.

It's sooooo frustrating trying to teach a pole dance class and "keep it clean". The main teacher has never danced. She's very athletic, but not graceful. So far what she has taught them is to do a dozen variations on spinning on the pole, and (for those who are strong enough) a couple upside-down tricks. I've explained to her, though, that if these ladies want to actually lose weight and get in shape they're going to have to dance. You don't drop two or three dress sizes by doing a few pole tricks one after another. It's the constant motion of dancing through songs, the full body movement...you know? So they're going to have to dance in there, but she doesn't know how to teach them to do it.

So seriously, I have to teach them to shake their asses in a "clean" way. LMFAO I think the gym owner is going to be appalled by my floor work...'cause it's dirty.

Yeah, I do some pretty intense pole tricks, but no one's going to shed any pounds that way, you gotta have an aerobic workout for that.

As far as keeping it fairly clean, I suppose you could slow down the naughty moves a bit? Naah, that won't really work either, will it. This is a serious dilemma. Can you teach the class when she's not there, lol? But no, you are the choreographer, she's the teacher?

    Thanks again for the input.

I've been downloading, and I think that I'm going to go with "Butterfly" by Crazytown. I don't know why I didn't think of that before.

Well Blue October- X-amount of Words is a cool song, I think.

Kindda goes fast and slow in intravels so they can spin on the slow stuf and take a break and then to trick on the faster parts?

I dunno if you'd like it though.

It's the gym owner who is a prude. She rarely pops into the class.

    See, here's what happened:

The gym advertised pole class and I was missing dancing...thought I could get a fix that way. So I started going, and after two weeks the teacher quit (too far of a drive). So a girl who already taught martial arts there (and who is a very good athlete and a quick learner) bought some "how-to" videos and took over.

For the first month, I was showing her how to do tricks and giving her pointers during the week...and then finally she started breaking the class up into two groups. She worked with one, and I worked with the other. So I've been co-teaching it for a little while now, and this week she asked if I would choreograph an actual routine for the girls. Hurrah! Yes yes yes!

I know that I have to keep the really hot stuff out of the class, but I do want to teach them some fun things, you know?
