Default Is this a bad club choice?

Is anyone familiar with "Anorexic Beauty" by Pulp? I'm pretty positive it's an ironic song, and it's not like I'm in anyway anorexic looking. I just find the song very sexy and fun to dance to, but i mean, the lyrics might be inappropriate. Or overly weird, I dunno. I have no filter for what's a very bad club song choice.

here's a link to the song on youtube, http://youtube.com/watch?v=liEEQgn9xl8

but DON'T watch it if you have an eating disorder, or are offended by that whole 'thinspo' thing (it's just pictures of skinny models). I like the song, not the video. I think the girl who posted it is a pro-anorexia person though. Maybe I am answering my own question? Still, is this an okay song to dance to at work? I really want to, but I don't want to get things thrown at me in the changeroom.

I don't like it either. I hate dancing to people talking whether it be the dj talking over the some or the song being talkish, its just awkward.

Fuck, guys don't listen to the lyrics. But I guess if you don't want to offend coworkers you should stay away. Sad.

"Disco 2000" is a fun Pulp song to dance to if you're looking for something more innocuous, though.

Most guys don't listen to lyrics, no. I have yet to have anyone come up to me and complain about lyrics, in 9 years of DJing, not customers, dancers, or managers.* But you never know, and the lyrics are pretty clear in parts of it. Some clubs I've worked it wouldn't matter at all, whether anyone could hear them or not. Some there might be a problem with it, I suppose.

If you do use it, be sure to cue it in at about 40 seconds.

*There was a manager who complained that I wasn't playing songs with enough lyrics in them, though. He complained about one of my best songs, GDMFSOB, which the dancers I played it for loved, and I had customers asking me to write down for them constantly. He didn't complain about the cussing at the very end, which I usually cut at anyway, he just didn't like that there weren't people singing about love and bunnies, in a fucking stripclub.

But if I'd played the music he liked--whiny slow shit that pretty much sucked monkey balls, I'd have been in trouble with the owners, so I ignored him. So he went running to the fucking owners and said I was a problem. But the club sucked to work in, so I could give a shit.

Dont like the lyrics, beat, nothin but then again im a techno girl...

If I was at work and the next song I was supposed to do a dance to I would have to wait until the song after that one. I see no way I could give even a chair dance to that.

Remember to think (when choosing music) if others will be able to work to it. Ive had to wait for the next song a few times and sometimes the whole club seems to almost shut down when certain music comes on.

Yes, certain songs can kill the mood, and even clear the tip rail even if the dancer is attractive--but especially if she is not. Much of this depends on the clientele and the previous songs, though. If you were playing stuff like this song before it, and the crowd was an eclectic sort, it might work alright.

If you had been playing sensuous techno or heavy rock or hip-hop, and the crowd was jamming on it, the song would be a bad choice, I think. I have worked with dancers who always try to pick the most eclectic, strange (even if often very cool) music ever, and they often ask for it at the worst possible time.

Like when you have the house rocking and the owner is standing right next to the booth with a bunch of his rich friends, lol!

Consider the crowd and the mood, always. You can be creative, but timing is everything.

Thanks for the input. Thanks for recommending "Disco 2000" Susan. I like that one too!

I think what you have to realize about our club is that no one tips in eastern Canada. Like, almost never, and when they do, it's more of a mini-dance. And we pretty well never do dances on the floor at this club, so no one has to dance to my music but me. People sitting and drinking have to listen to it though. Maybe if I'm bored on a quiet Tuesday I'll try it, but otherwise I'll stick to my usual. I dance to different stuff in general, but like I said, when you don't have to worry about tips or affecting other dancers, there's not much to fear when it comes to music choices. Except having dancers roll their eyes at you in the changeroom, but I hate their music too. Heh.

Well what the hell, why not? It's definitely a catchy upbeat song. Have at it, lol! I'd cue it in at 40 seconds though if you can.

    Bwahaha, just saw this.

    <--- biggest Pulp fan

I really wouldn't play Anorexic Beauty in a SC, like, ever. ETA: what's up withthat link, the song's all fucked-up like.

Most of Common People is good for club, and I've played Countdown and Death goes to the Disco without any eye-batting.

I admit to wanting to play Master of the Universe, but not gonna compromise my tips, lol.
