So THAT'S what a bunion is! You know, now that I can recognize it, I work with a girl who looks like she has that. Her bf got her "yoga toes" and she'll slip her shoes off randomly and put those on for a couple of minutes during her shift. She says they feel really good.

Not only could you be worsening, you most certainly are. I seriously think there is a market for wide toe boxed, orthopedic stripper shoes.
So do not wear heels, like ever when you are off work. Get toe separators. The evidence is sketchy, but anecdotally women seem to suffer less from block heels than skinny heels. Try to get shoes that have the lowest possible slope. Avoid pointy toes. Massage your feet when you remove your shoes. The surgery, I understand is a lot less painful now, but there is not a huge point if you are dancing - the bunions will probably just re-occur, I think, but you can consult with a doctor, since I'm not one.

I have this problem, I have fugly feet!
A lot of dancers have bunions actually and still sear sandals.
I have a collection of closed toe shoes though - they are sooooooooo comfortable ad have not worsened the problem despite being heels. I do have an alternative look though but there are quite a number of different styles out there, so there should be something for everyone. Mine are all made by Pleaser.

i had the same problem and also wear 5 inch clear heels and i do think they aggravate the problem.
poorly feet run in my family definitely not from badly fitting shoes, it's an inherited problem for me.

i hear karo do a range of wide fitting stripper shoes, which could possibly help? i have tried to find a uk based stockist that sells the wide fitting shoes but no luck so far (please speak up anyone who knows of a place to get them!)

also, i had the operation on one foot a few years ago and i was VERY painful, with a lot of down time. wasn't stripping at the time but if i was i reackon i would have probably had to take at least 2 months off. it seems to be coming back slightly, though not so painful this time and i do think it's from wearing stripper shoes. yuck. feet suck. well, mine do.

yes im developing bunions. they run in my family. it sucks. but my feet alway look cute in all shoes, open toes, anything. i just don't want them to get worse. surgery doesn't sound too fun.

I'm developing this. I bought my four-inch heels thinking they were low, but really, I should have bought a higher heel with less of a slope. This is what I am wearing and have been since the beginning of April: http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.c...2002_105910087

I was thinking of buying these because the slope doesn't look as bad so I won't have all my weight coming down on that bunion-ized joint (only happening on my right foot - I don't know why):

It's a thicker heel, and the strap has to help. My fear is that if I fall on these, then it's more likely a broken ankle, I guess, but there's that same risk with the 4 inch heels.

In the meantime, I bought some tape to give the joint some support if I need it.

I'm concerned that what could appear to be bunion pain for some folks could actually be the beginning of a stress fracture to the sesamoid bone. Chrissy68 talked about it here:

I've been dancing 7 years. I have arthritis in certain places. But the worst arthritic pain is from a break in my foot, on the sesamoid bone. I broke that because of dancing, it was a stress fracture from too much hard dancing on the balls of my feet (which is what the shoes make you do). I saw several docs and none were as helpful as my acupuncturist, who kept me in the shoes nightly. she's awesome. i take herbs to strengthen bones as well, and deal with long term joint pain.

But, it's inevitable. We will all have it from prolonged use; hell how many of us actually stretch before work? I get strange looks from others in the DR when I do, so.. you can be sure there's a VERY small % of dancers who stretch and are good to their bodies the way they should be. (granted, most are probably on this site heh)
I never considered that stretching could help an emerging bunion, but yes, if this explanation is accurate from Wikipedia:

Bunions are commonly associated with a deviated position of the big toe toward the second toe; and the deviation in the angle between the first and second metatarsal bones of the foot. The small sesamoid bones found beneath the first metatarsal (which help the flexor tendon bend the big toe downwards) may also become deviated over time as the first metatarsal bone drifts away from its normal position. Arthritis of the great toe joint, diminished and/or altered range of motion, and discomfort with pressure applied to the bump or with motion of the joint, may all accompany bunion development.
    ^Sounds like stripper shoes.

^An update: I saw my doctor about my feet to get the process started because I trust him and don't have a podiatrist yet. Bunions aren't really the problem for me after all, though they are indeed there and can throb if I don't watch the toe box and the straps that pinch circulation.

The intensity of the pain was coming from the two little bones under the ball of the foot that are inflamed and headed toward a stress fracture because of dancing in the shoes and the way I carry my weight (mechanics).

The doc said there is an ortho podiatrist in the practice who can make inserts for me for stripper shoes, though my heel will have to go down to three inches or so - or find a shoe that adopts that level of incline with a platform on them.

Check out the foot savers from www.yamunabodyrolling.com.

My feet look like the "before" picture too but they kind of always have since I was a kid. i've asked other people what they think and my conclusion is that different people have different shaped feet. It's only problematic when it hurts.

    Do you feet hurt?

^For some reason, the pics aren't loading for me.

Yes, the pain in the inflamed bones was scream-worthy for a while. I started a break from dancing to concentrate on something else for a while. That is what is letting those bones in my right foot heal.

My mechanics are not great because of surgeries and injuries that have put an undue stress on my right side. The sole of my stilettos on the right side are actually shedding lol, whereas the left sole is not. Right where the wear is the worst is where the problem bones are.

I'm hoping the inserts can solve this.

I started on that link and clicked to get info about the foot savers. There were pictures on that page, but they didn't load for me.
