Default Tom Waits. Upcoming tour. No kidding.

First the new Eddie Izzard tour, now this?!? What's next? Maybe Leonard Cohen is coming to a little coffeehouse near me to read poetry? But yes, it's true; the one and only, the musician whose name is a complete sentence, he's going to be blessing us with his bona-fide, live, corporeal presence this summer.

The details are a little vague at this point, but who the hell cares? A the article says, "Septuplets, full solar eclipses, and Tom Waits tours: some things just don't come around too often." Other fans here, let's all keep our eyes and ears open & bump/post when there's more info.

If I weren't pregnant I'd go find a dirty dive bar with a player piano near a carnival and knock back some whiskey to celebrate.

    WHAAAAA?!?!

    There goes my life savings.

I missed seeing him a few years ago, partly because ticket prices were obscene, so I swore this time around I'd pay whatever to see him at least once. I'm a bit obsessed with him.

Now we just need an Oingo Boingo reunion and I can die happy.

    Thank you for posting this

Just thought I'd share two things I found when searching for more concrete info:

    1. A recent Tom Waits cover album was released by, of all people, Scarlett Johansen! I'm sure some of you knew that, but it's news to me. David Bowie helped out. Apparently she's also played with Jesus and Mary Chain. *boggle* I confess I am flummoxed but will strive to remain open-minded.

The tracklist of "Anywhere I Lay My Head"
    01 "Fawn" (Alice)
02 "Town With No Cheer" (Swordfish Trombones)
    03 "Falling Down" (Big Time)
04 "Anywhere I Lay My Head" (Rain Dogs)
    05 "Fannin' Street" (Orphans)
    06 "Song for Jo" (original)
    07 "Green Grass" (Real Gone)
08 "I Wish I Was in New Orleans" (Small Change)
09 "I Don't Want To Grow Up" (Bone Machine)
10 "No One Knows I'm Gone" (Alice)
11 "Who Are You?" (Bone Machine)

    2. I also found this very cool interview with the man himself. Nearly two years old, but still fascinating and chock full o' quotes. And I love that he digs Missy Elliot. He also mentions the Scarlett album, too, which was in early stages at the time. Some gems:

    Pitchfork:
Do you have a favorite sound?
Tom: Bacon. In a frying pan. If you record the sound of bacon in a frying pan and play it back it sounds like the pops and cracks on an old 33 1/3 recording. Almost exactly like that. You could substitute it for that sound.

Tom: There is no such thing as nonfiction. There is no such thing as truth. People who really know what happened aren't talking. And the people who don't have a clue, you can't shut them up.

Tom: There are only two things you can throw out the window of a moving car, legally. Do you know what they are?
    Pitchfork: Um…
Tom: Water. And feathers. Everything else you can get in trouble for.

Happily, pregnancy is a passing condition. But a great attitude like the one expressed above? That lasts a lifetime.

I saw Tom Waits in Memphis a couple years ago. He was incredible, and the show was long, but the venue was totally inappropriate. You don't listen to Tom Waits when you're crammed into a tiny seat in a huge ornate theater, you listen to Tom Waits in a laid-back bar with a beer and some fried pickles. I had to go out to the lobby and pace around after a couple of hours because I was so uncomfortable (I could still hear the music in the lobby).

I might have to get tickets to this tour though... but hopefully he's in a more comfortable venue!

^ Wow, I totally agree on the venue! (And on the fried pickles.) Big no to the ornate theater.

I hope that's not the case this time around . . . but I admit I'll have to go anyway.

Still no dates, but another article I found confirming the news (I'm nervous that I just dreamed it all, so.)

And as suggested by the above article, here's a little seasonal treat to hold you over. Who needs candy bunnies for Easter? Gimme a Chocolate Jesus. Or as he says, an "Immaculate Confection". (GOD I love that man.)

Not to be critical, but doublecheck your source and verify the year. Those look like the tour dates I encountered for his last extremely limited tour in 2006. So there's hope!

He's definitely doing both the US and Europe this time, though again there are no details yet.

Yep, August 4, 2006 was when I saw him at the Orpheum in Memphis. Those are indeed the dates for the last tour.

I was gonna make a thread about this. There's a little blurb column in the weekly rag here that mentioned a possible Tom date at the Academy of Music this summer, but nothing is confirmed yet. The Philly dates for Eddie still arent on Ticketmaster either dammit.

I saw Tom at the Beacon Theater in NYC on the Mule Variations tour. Sheer sheer bliss.

Now if you'll excuse me I must go kill some children.

Shit. As Emily Latella said: "never mind".

Poop on there being no dates within 10 hours of me. Oh well, Eddie Izzard is tomorrow night.

Oh, also, the dog food commercial thing. I'm 99% positive that was someone imitating Tom, and he sued them over it. I'll have to check but I recall hearing something about it.

Tom has sued multiple parties over flat out using his songs or hiring imitators when he declines to let them use his work. It wouldn't surprise me if he sued a dog food company.

I just did some searching around, and it seems the dog food ad is for real. It's the only one he ever actually did, sometime in the early 80's. He did sue some German car company, and also Dorito's for misappropriating his image and such. Interesting, just because he has made so many incredibly vitriolic quotes about his music in advertising. I recall one that went something like "Using my work for commercials is like sewing a cow udder to my face. Painful and humiliating."
