Default Dumb Question About Hair and Heat

I've read a few times on different healthy hair advice websites that it is better when using a straightening iron to put it at a higher heat so you have to run it through your hair once(or less at least), instead of keeping it at a lower heat and running it through your hair over and over again. It's going to take a specific amount of heat for your hair to straighten no matter what, does it really matter if you get their slowly or immediately? Or is the act of running your hair through the iron itself repeatedly bad for it like brushing?

I'm sure the iron isn't good no matter what lol, but if one way really is even a little bit better, especially if it's the quicker method, I'd always use that method. I used my straightener for the first time in 2-3 weeks tonight, so I am making anti-heat progress.

    Congrats on the progress!

Running the hair through the iron itself is bad. If you're using a heat protectant, crank it up and run it through once.

Using a quality flat iron is good, too.

My hair straightener is a Solia and I turn it all the way up to 450. I find my hair is less damaged because it doesn't take as long to straighten it plus I stay straight for a couple of days. I think it also depends on your hair if you will cause damage with a high setting. You have to remember to coat your hair with something before you straighten and it will be good to use a leave in conditioner at least once a week.

I knew a girl who straightened her hair a few times a week and she would crank it up to the highest highest setting, but she has beautiful hair with no breakage. She also got her hair trimmed regularly though.

We were taught to use the lowest setting the hair takes. Which means you can damage your iron and hair by using higher settings than necessary. I'd find myself a decent iron and use the lowest setting possible but not so low as I am running the iron through my hair 8 times. Also try using smaller sections.

If I was going to flat iron it I wouldn't blow dry it too. Just let it air dry.

That's what I do. Although for the longest time I was frying my hair both ways about every two days.

Word. Use the hottest heat setting it takes for your hair to straighten in one, slow moving, fluid pass.

I highly reccomend getting a flat iron with a digital heat read out if you don't already have one. My flat iron goes to 410 degrees, but I rarely have to use it hotter than the mid 300's... if you color your hair, don't go hotter than 392.

Exactly my problem. If I straighten it after an airdry, it's just too flat and limp.

But if I just blowdry it without straightening afterwards, it just becomes tooooooo puffy and frizzy, especially puffy. Now I either deal with it being wimpily-straight or I just let it airdry. I'm just trying to find ways to make my airdried hair look---um...human.

If it's wavy then maybe use a diffuser on a low setting to play up a "curly" look. There are products that will help you enhance this look. Maybe even throw a couple of big velcro rollers in there for some extra movement/body.

I lost the diffuser end to my blowdryer. I need to buy a new blowdryer anyway. Maybe that Aveda stuff will do the trick; I had a great curling mousse by Nexxus called Phyto Organics I think, and it worked wonderfully the first time but since then lame results.
