    Default ntsc/pal help please!!

so i just bought these dvd's that came from aus. they are supposedly able to play on ALL PAL, and I know of people here in the US that can play them on their dvd players...but my computer will only play the first in the series, not the other 2 (says there is no disk in the drive) and 3 of my other dvd players won't play them at all! The other dvd players are totally different brands and range in age from about 3 yrs to 1 month old

Is there any way to turn these pal disks into ntsc? is there some sort of converter that can take them and make a copy into ntsc???

    HELP!

A computer should play anything with the right program. VLC player I think is the most common. The first guess is your dvds are physically damaged. Do they have a lot of scratches on them?

My under $40 dvd player plays any region and ntsc and pal. (I think a code had to be entered to play any region)

Yes there are programs that copies dvds and converts pal to ntsc. Nero and dvdshrink include the options.

Or you could enter the code into your DVD player that makes it multi-region.

Tell me the make and model of your DVD player and I'll tell you how.

I have never tried myself, but it looks like Nero Recode has the ability to convert PAL to NTSC, however Nero refuses to copy copy protected disks, so it may not allow you to recode one either (of course this assumes you find a DVD drive that will read the disk to begin with so that it can be converted).

That's not a PAL/NTSC issue, it's a DVD regional issue. For some reason most DVD's are set to a particular region so you have to have either a DVD player from that region or a multiregional one.

PAL/NTSC are for broadcast and video, not DVD.

    ^^^

I'm not sure that is the case. PAL and NTSC are different formats, and so require different encodings to DVD. It is possible to perform real-time conversions so a player can take a disk in either format, and output it to PAL or NTSC, but this is not something all players support. Here is a FAQ with some important points -

    http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html#1.19

(the gist of this is that PAL players generally can convert to NTSC, but NTSC players rarely support converting PAL disks to NTSC output)

Video on a DVD is stored in digital format, but it's formatted for one of two mutually incompatible television systems: 525/60 (NTSC) or 625/50 (PAL/SECAM). Therefore, there are two kinds of DVDs: "NTSC DVDs" and "PAL DVDs." Some players only play NTSC discs, others play PAL and NTSC discs. Discs are also coded for different regions of the world (see 1.10). NTSC is the TV format used in Canada, Japan, Mexico, Philippines, Taiwan, United States, and other countries. PAL is the TV format used in most of Europe, most of Africa, China, India, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, North Korea, and other countries. (See the chart at www.remoteviewing.com for a complete list.)

Almost all DVD players sold in PAL countries play both kinds of discs. These multi-standard players partially convert NTSC to a 60-Hz PAL (4.43 NTSC) signal. The player uses the PAL 4.43-MHz color subcarrier encoding format but keeps the 525/60 NTSC scanning rate. Most modern PAL TVs can handle this "pseudo-PAL" signal. A few multi-standard PAL players output true 3.58 NTSC from NTSC discs, which requires an NTSC TV or a multi-standard TV. Some players have a switch to choose 60-Hz PAL or true NTSC output when playing NTSC discs. There are a few standards-converting PAL players that convert from an NTSC disc to standard PAL output for older PAL TVs. Proper "on the fly" standards conversion requires expensive hardware to handle scaling, temporal conversion, and object motion analysis. Because the quality of conversion in DVD players is poor, using 60-Hz PAL output with a compatible TV provides a better picture than converting from NTSC to PAL. (Sound is not affected by video conversion.)

Most NTSC players can't play PAL discs, and most NTSC TVs don't work with PAL video. A very small number of NTSC players (such as Apex and SMC) can convert PAL to NTSC. External converter boxes are also available, such as the Emerson EVC1595 ($350). High-quality converters are available from companies such as TenLab and Snell and Wilcox.

Hehe, it's okay. This is not something most of us run into. For various reasons, I've had some exposure to the PAL vs NTSC format differences in my previous job and to a lesser degree, my current job.

Not sure if your article is old or if the video quality was poor and I didn't notice but many DVD players say they can play PAL for US NTSC TV's.

Plays PAL discs on any NTSC TV

Yea, region free, converting players are becoming more available.

    There are two issues.

The legal one, which is mentioned here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_region_code

And that PAL <-> NTSC are different formats, and require conversion of the frame rate and video resolution, which is becoming increasingly inexpensive to build into the player (although I don't know if the quality is very good in all of these players).
