    Default Good car for commuting?

The beemer has 205K miles on it and B is afraid its going to break down soon. Weve decided to buy him a commuter car. We want to pay around $5K (so hybrids are out of the picture) Were willing to pay up to $8k. We do NOT want to finance so this is our budget.

Whats a car that we can run up miles on and still get pretty good gas mileage?

I was originally thinking a Honda Civic or something like that but I know theres people on here that know more about cars than me.

    Thanks

I would go for the Honda. In my experience you can drive them way over 100+

Toyota Carollas never die. Like, ever.

I rolled mine and it was still running, upside down, with the roof caved in, the oil spilling out and the battery half-out.

As for the Saturn, eh, it's a GM. Cheap GMs with tons of chrome. Meh. If you're looking to put a lot of miles on something, I'd go foreign.

I have a Honda Civic and I commute 1.5 hours to and from work. Gets good mileage and I don't have to worry about it breaking down.

    Toyota's are nice too.

Didnt Zinaida already start her OWN thread about her turbocharging stuff. I see no reason all this is being posted in a thread about COMMUTER CARS and turbocharged corollas are NOT commuter cars...

Well I deleted for you since you asked so nicely, but since you mentioned it, yes, turbocharged Corollas CAN be used as commuters as well.

Right, Im going to turbocharge a standard for uhm, worse gas mileage? Yea, commuter... ANY car can be a commuter... maybe I should have been more specific.

on your budget, I'd look at a newer second-hand Korean car i.e. Kia or Hyundai. Hondas hold their resale value like crazy ... arguably to a degree that isn't really justified once the vehicle has 100k plus miles and seven years on it (to fall in your 8k max price range).

Ok. It's obvious you know more about cars here....just get the Honda.

^^^^ 9 years old makes me nervous as hell. The rubber used on Honda's isn't fundamentally different from the rubber used on any other type of car ... and it's used in 100 different places from the fuel system to the shock absorbers. If all of the rubber fittings start going hard and inflexible due to age, you've got a BIG problem on your hands.

Yes, but if she's looking for a Civic and has $8,000, that's what I found. They hold their value, so I think that's reasonable for that car, given the demand. Everyone wants Civics.

which is precisely why Civics that are more than 5 years old are arguably overpriced versus their actual remaining reliability and mileage.

Oh I don't disagree with you there. That's why I definitely advocate taking any potential car purchase to a reputable mechanic. Another good indication if it has problems the seller isn't telling you is if they get weird when you ask to take the car to be checked out.

That 2005 Altima for $2940 scares me. Maybe they forgot a 1 in the front of the price? Salvaged, missing the engine?

This is why I brought this up - so it would be better to get a Hyundai or Kia over a Civic?

We dont care what the car looks like or amenities on it. Its strictly for him to drive to and from work. We have the Maxima as the nicer, luxury sedan.

All I care about it - it needs to be able to get lots and lots of miles and good gas mileage...

I really would advise again a Kia. Yeah, they're cheap, but they're also very unsafe.

Hyundais are definitely getting better. I would have said Subaru because they are really great on reliability and longevity (Mine's approaching 200K and is great) but they're so rare to find for sale because they are THAT good.

As far as the Altima.... wow, I didn't catch that. Yeah, that concerns me.

I want to suggest a good review site I live by:

It's not just reviews, it's reviews by the actual owners of the car, so I like them better than say Consumer Reports.
