    Default OdysseusNJ is the POTW

It runs from Sunday to Sunday so when it is your turn to be POTW you will be in the spotlight for a whole week.

Everyone can ask questions and it is up to the POTW to decide if they would like to answer them. Some questions may be too personal and that is fine - you don't have to answer everything.

This thread is not an appropriate forum to settle old scores or to flame. Do not bait the POTW with questions that bring up past transgressions. Please spin-off if you feel the need but let's keep this thread fun and supportive.

On Friday of each week I will PM the current POTW and ask them to choose the next person. The POTW can choose anyone who asked a question on their thread that week and someone, preferably, who has not been chosen in the past year. If you do not wish to be POTW you can still ask questions, just let the current POTW know that you do not want to be chosen for the next week (for instance, you will be out of town).

1 - A while; my previous haircut was a "Mr. Clean" with a blade not an electric. I'd say it probably took *at least* 18 months until it was past the awkward stage and at a length suitable for headbanging. Another year before it was shoulder length or more. This is the longest it's ever been.

2 - Hmm I don't know. I guess it would have a gym in the basement, and a garage for my cars so I never have to worry about parking again. An extra room for all my guitars and computer and technical crap so it wouldn't be messily in plain sight when company came over. Maybe an open air duplex or triplex - kitties love that sort of thing where they can run up and down stairs and hang off stuff and see all the way down. Within walking distance of some large public park land for hiking, fishing, biking, etc. Withing driving distance of some awesome hills for driving. (Preferably the PCH!) Climate like norcal, socal or the mediterranean.

Some place the kitty box would be out of sight and smell.

3 - I am a big fan of two. If I had a bigger place and fewer obligations I'd foster as well but I think two permanent ones is ideal. If I had a bigger place with a yard I'd probably get a largish dog too (Samoyed or Retriever sized)

1 Going out - Drambuie on the rocks. Malibu and diet coke is good for if you are going to have to drive after. Port after dinner if I'm in the mood.
Staying in - probably margaritas or white Russians since I make them very well. There is a california wine called "The Prisoner" that I am a big fan of.

    2. Northern California is the best season. If you delete January it kind of only has one.

    3. Certainly an optimist, although I've been called otherwise.

    1. I haven't watched that show in years. Was the professor sleeping with any of the hot women?

    2. I have extremely bad recall of my childhood. Perhaps my mom falling of the steps of the pre-k bus.

Thursday! I bought some sweet potatoes to make with it this week!

And I want you to play for me, hence why I'm asking you to bring your guitar to dinner! Duh.

I really can't make up my mind, either as authors or as kittahs.

Simone is in my lap right now. She certainly spends more time on SW with me.

I have 10. Phoenixes on each of my hips and right leg, the Norse rune Uruz on my left leg, my family motto across the top of my back, a guitar on my inner left forearm (drawn from my first real guitar, the one in my sig), the royal crest of Norway on my left forearm, my family crest on my right forearm, "existence before essence" along my right arm from shoulder to wrist, and a knife on my left ribcage (drawn from a knife given to me from my dad and to him from my maternal grandfather). The family motto and crest are Scottish.

I'm getting "amor fati" in black and red down the front of my left shin very soon. I want to get something very large on my back but I'm unsure what. I want to get more color tats, right now only the one down my right arm has any color.

Hehe that depends on how long it takes travelocity to load.

One day I will take a crazy x-country road trip again and then I will pit stop at all of the cool SW haunts.

    Worst date?

I haven't had too many bad dates. One person off the internet didn't look like their picture. That was one of a few reasons I stopped doing that internet thing.

Actually my first date with my high school GF didn't go very well. We had met once before and some friends tried to set us up, a bunch of us went to a movie or dinner or something. She was so nervous she barely said a word to me the entire time! Luckily we had met before and she was cool then, and I was saavy enough at 15 to realize she was just being shy - we went on to date for 2 1/2 years and it was awesome!

Or maybe it was just that she had great legs not that I was saavy.

    Best date?

I had a lot of good dates with said high school sweetheart. It was all so new to me. We would watch movies and eat McDonalds. Her mom took us to dinner a lot which was so great (although not really "dates" I guess) because I didn't really get along with my family. I'd stuff myself at Houlihan's (before it was a chain) and get sleepy.

I remember walking in central park with my next girlfriend when I was 18. We weren't dating yet but we couldn't stop touching and holding each other; some teacher's aide who I guess was chaperoning her elementary school class came over and scolded us for public display of affection. What a twerp, I'm sure there were kids doing way worse things than that around and we weren't even doing anything dirty. But it stands out in my memory because we were so on fire for each other that I guess it was a spectacle. We also saw Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas at the two dollar theater which was so fun. We third wheeled our mutual friend, hehehe...

Valentine's Day 07 was a good date too, which is funny b/c the lady kept insisting it wasn't a date!

    Fav movie?

Depends on my mood so it's hard to pick one. The Elephant Man probably has the best acting.

    Ahh:

When I was a kid I watched Spaceballs over and over again. Does "I, Claudius" count as a movie?

    First love?

See my first GF when I was 15 above. That was a gradual thing though. The first time I really "fell", as in rapidly and uncontrollably, was the next GF.

Well of course there's my sig. I've had her since I was 14. She's hanging on the wall and I just played her about 45 minutes ago.

Silly dream that you haven't been able to do?

    Threesome.

Favorite thing to do when it's raining heavily (not cold, just rain)?

When I was a child we lived in a crappy little apartment in Brooklyn with an alley along the side of the building. When it rained heavily these huge puddles would collect in the alley and these big bubbles would form and float on the surface. I would sit at the window with a slice of pizza and just watch them form, float, collide and eventually pop when hit by a water droplet. Sometimes I would shoot them with a little plastic water gun to help out the rain. To this day that's one of the most relaxing things I've ever done. That apartment never smelled good, so I guess the combination of the dim sky, the fresh smell of the rain and the cool air really worked for me.

Nowadays I like to sit in the pizzaria down the road and read Russian literature. The pizza in the rain is probably a carry over from the puddle watching.

Best guitar player in this generation? Best ever?

    My choice is Steve Vai.

Value comparatives like "best" and "better" are misused so often with music. It's a pet peeve of mine because I've studied so much of it. 99% of the time when people talk about music they are talking about personal preference. /rant

What do you feel has a more direct impact on your bedroom skills: your intellect or your talented fingers?

Who knows? I just go with it.

Do you enjoy sweets? What is your favorite, either for special occasions or for general nomming?

I could live off of chocolate, except that I'd probably die pretty quickly.

Explain the appeal of KE to me. I still don't get it.

I first saw Killswitch Engage (that is what you meant, right?) in 2002 opening for Soilwork. They had their old singer and put on a great show. I'm glad I saw them live before I heard their album because that first album with the original singer might not have stood out for me. They've improved a lot since they got Howard Jones, who has a better clean singing voice (although I suspect he relies heavily on ProTools' Auto-Tune plugin in the studio). Their guitarwork has gotten better and they added just the right amount of pop appeal. They are also really funny guys. Their video for Holy Diver proves that! Basically they are a bunch of cool guys who create well written heavy music you can mosh too and sing along with, and who all perform very well.

Some of their stuff has really neat things in it. Take "A Bid Farewell". It starts with a sick polyrhythic intro. Go ahead. Try and figure out the time signature there. Then they throw in some really heavy straightforward riffs, bring back the melody from the intro to introduce a verse with a pretty interesting rhythm. Then they manage to put in a thrash riff prechorus that leads into a huge radio friendly chorus with big guitar harmonies. And that's all in about minute.

I don't know. Maybe they just appeal more to musicians and to kids who want to punch other kids in the face.

Spam is meant to be destroyed! I hate spam and delete it.

Once I did write back to one of the scam guys. He was trying to get me to wire some money or something. I kept giving him addresses like "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington DC" and names like "Johnny Appleseed", and wire transfer numbers that were just one digit off of what could be a real one. I had him strung a long for a long while and it was pretty funny. I should go find those emails.

I think you're just fantastic. You know, for the record.

If you were to travel back in time, what period would you like to live in for a week?

If you had to pick a porn name, what would it be?

If you were given a random small island all to yourself and could opt to put it anywhere in the world (off a coast) where would you put it?

    1) In your opinion, what is it about a guitar that always bedazzles the ladies?

    2) Good man, bad boy [my perferred M.O.], or some other combination of the two [or do you disagree that all grown males are both men and boys at the same time]?

    3) Classic question: If you where on desert island and could only have five albums to listen to, which would they be?
    Fiat justitia, pereat mundus.

BTW, while we are on the subject, is it needed to point out the obvious: That it is just possible that if you are willing to judge the worth of someone simply by what you read on a website about them it might say a whole hell of a lot more about you than it says about the person you are judging?

If you were to travel back in time, what period would you like to live in for a week?

The eighties, when my guitar skills would have been in more demand both onstage and backstage!

Hmm I guess technically I did live through the eighties but I was too young to be headbanging with my elementary school teachers or picking up the kindergarden chicks.

Hmm that's kind of a weak answer. But what else can one expect from 7:30am. Let me mull it over some more.

If you had to pick a porn name, what would it be?

My IRL last name sounds kind of porn-ish, and I don't want to go spreading that around SW unfortunately.

If you were given a random small island all to yourself and could opt to put it anywhere in the world (off a coast) where would you put it?

Probably California. It kind of gets a bad rap on SW but California rules. There are a lot of coasts I haven't visited though that I'd like to so I'm not making a very informed decision.

    Guitar rocks.

    2) Good man, bad boy [my perferred M.O.], or some other combination of the two [or do you disagree that all grown males are both men and boys at the same time]?

I'm not sure I really get the question... yep I'm certainly both a man and a boy. I'm way too responsible not to be the former and have way too much silly fun sometimes not to be the latter.

    3) Classic question: If you where on desert island and could only have five albums to listen to, which would they be?

    Certainly:
Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane
Pain of Salvation - The Perfect Element

The other three would depend on my mood, but be something like:
A collection of Bach for violin
A collection of Chopin Preludes and Noctures
Machine Head - TTAOE or The Blackening
Probably Master of Puppets which was my favorite album as a teenager
Dream Theater - Scenes from a Memory (sometimes DT is so cheesy but there's a lot of content there if you have to listen to it over and over again for years on an island!)
A Faith No More album (I have a hard time picking which)
    Opeth - Damnation
Primus - They All Can't be Zingers
    Something by SOAD maybe?

OK I'm too groggy to pick. There you have it.
