Default Should you take your cat to the vet

I thought this might be a useful resource in all those "my cat is hacking up his intestines; should I take him to the vet" situations that seem to come up around here:

    http://www.justforcatsvet.com/site/v...ERYCATOWNE.pml

(By the way, the answer is always "YES".)
"He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

Any responsible pet owner knows the answer is always YES

This is where it pays to build a relationship up with your vet. Why? Thanks to Bibs and now my dedication in re Puddy, I've proved beyond a doubt how much of a responsible owner I am in re what-ever cat(s) are in my life... and thus he has given me his personal mobile number for whenever Puddy has an emergency (since he is diabetic).

Saves my flatmate (and thus me) the expense of the emergency animal clinic.

Anyway, yeah, you buy a kitten, cat, puppy or dog... if something is wrong, take it to the vet. Do not post here about it as we will ALWAYS tell you to take it to the vet.

BTW, a good vet will allow you to "pay off" any costs incurred if so needed.

...However, point 1 is not always true: pissing everywhere is not always a urinary tract issue. Do take the cat in the first time there's a problem, but if the vet gives him/her a clean bill of health you are likely looking at a dominance issue with the other cats in the house, etc.

The rest of this is spot on.

I hate when people ask those questions. I took my bird for an emergency checkup at 4am just because she ran into something and her nostril had some blood in it. I would've cried myself to death if it had turned out she had damaged her brain or was bleeding internally and I just thought she had a bloody nose. She did though... and the $300 to make sure she wasn't was worth the money. I have never been so relieved.

Yeah but a looooot of people don't take their cat to the vet at ALL if it's peeing everywhere. And then their pet dies and suddenly it was 'Oh well she was only peeing all over the place and it pissed me off!!!' Yeah.. I'd kinda piss myself too if I was dying.

    I agree.

My puppy started to throw up and have the runs. We thought he just ate somethign bad or just had an upset tummy.

However...he didn't have all of his shots yet, and those are also signs of parvo, which is very deadly and fast moving. The only possible chance at possibly getting the dog to live through it is with fast medical attention.

So I went to the emergency vet at 1 am paid out the ass for it....only to discover he was just fine. Just a tummy ache.

But it was totally worth every penny, just to be on the safe side...because what if it was parvo? I want to know I did everythign I possibly could to help save him.

always better to be safe than sorry. overly cautious never hurt anything.....

Yeah. There are ways to tell with peeing whether it's behavioral -- really subtle things you can predict -- but it requires knowing your cat(s) very well.

(One of the more obvious ones: you are petting cat B. Cat A walks in, sniffs around, is ignored, and proceeds to stand on one of your belongings, directly in your line of view, and urinate. Mine does this only when things are crazy stressful and he hasn't been hugged enough. We make sure to hug him a lot!)

One of our cats got lethargic last year and wasn't eating all his food. We took him in and found out he has the beginnings of kidney failure, which is really common in older cats. They can survive for years, though, if it's caught early and they get proper treatment -- IV hydration once a week, food with less protein in it. He seems a lot happier now that he's getting IV hydration -- he's more active, eats more food and purrs more.

lol, you just reminded me of the time I accidentially locked my cat in the closet overnight.
( I kept his food in there and didn't realize he walked in as I was getting his dinner ready.)
The next morning I open the closet door again to feed him breakfast and he runs out!
I felt so terrible and awful, my poor cat.

So I give him love, pet him, make it all better, then get ready for work.

I put on my shoe...and it was mushy and warm.....

he pooped right in my shoe!

yeah..that'll teach me to check the closet before I shut the door.....

Yeah my cats are neurotic. If the litter boxes arent SPARKLING clean(and I cant scoop 24/7 sorry),anything changes their routine like company or I go out of town, etc...they pee all over the bathroom floor. Yep....about an INCH away from the litter box. Drives us crazy. Took hundreds of dollars in tests to find out that they are just vindictive little brats.

We did have the tests done though..cant be too careful.

What about a cat with one weepy eye who is otherwise healthy? I'm not made of money and I don't want to take him to the vet if there's nothing the vet can do about plain old springtime allergies. But this one eye has been wet and weepy for about a week now. It's clear, doesn't look like an infection, and the cat is otherwise perfectly fine. Is that a vet-worthy issue?

Yek...has it happened before? If hes still eating and going to the bathroom ok then clean it with a warm washcloth and keep an eye on it(no pun intended!). If he isnt better at all in a few days then call the vet. Its prob just allergies since he's in a new environment with new allergens.

Haven't noticed it before, but we did just move to Oregon and it's definitely springtime out there, daffodils and crocuses blooming and everything. I'm sure it's allergies, although it's funny that it's only his left eye weeping. His right eye is fine. Other than that he's been totally normal (well, normal for him). It's really weeping profusely though, I have to wipe it twice a day. He doesn't struggle either, he stands still and lets me clean it so I guess it bothers him. But I don't think there's anything the vet could do about it anyway so I might as well just save my money, right?

Yek, I took one of younger cats to the vet for a similar issue last year. It was seasonal allergies. The vet offered meds but said they really weren't necessary, there was no infection and it should clear up within a couple of days. It's happened a couple of times since then, and I just wipe it with a warm cloth for him. It's always the same eye, too.

We're having a pee issue with old man diabeetus cat right now. His hips aren't the best anymore and he sometimes has a hard time getting his back legs into the litter box when he pees. We've started putting those puppy housebreaking pads under the front of the litterbox for when he has an accident. I think we might have to get a new litter box that has some sort of ramp into it for him. We've been doing weekly glucose curve tests to try to get the levels stabilized and I hope we figure it out soon.

I dont think you need the vet just yet.If it gets worse or doesnt start to improve by the end of the week then think about calling. But there wont be much they can do for allergies anyway, esp because of his age. Just like us...you kind of have to deal for while until they go away. He'll get used to the new state and new allergens soon.

It is extremely common BTW to only see it in one eye.

One of our Portlander cats has allergies. The vet said give him half of a Chlortrimeton every 12 hours. That's chlorpheniramine maleate, no additives (make sure about the no additives, NSAIDs are bad for cats, and I don't think the long-acting ones would be the same on kitty physiology.) The pills are 4mg, yellow, scored in the middle for easy breaking.

Well, um, I don't know what to say.

    Oh! You mean him.
