    Hair coloring dilemma!

My hair is making me so frustrated these days and so I'm hoping I can soak up some good advice from you all! My hair is naturally dark brown (think Katie Holmes) but I've been dying it blond (a la Cameron Diaz) for the past 3 or 4 years. Rather than getting a block color throughout I normally get an ass-load of highlights done in 2 or 3 similar colors...

It just drives me crazy how often I wind up needing to go back to the hairdressers! I feel like I pay $$$'s to get it done and then after about a week I have the start of my roots showing! I always see girls that seem to make it look so natural for an extended period of time and it makes me I don't know what I'm doing wrong?!

Is there anyway I can do it myself sometimes with a dye from the store? I read up on it online and got some horror stories about my hair going orange instead!!

*sigh* Whats a girl to do

I used to want highlights but I never ended up getting them because I didn't want to have to keep going to salon for touch ups. I don't think I'd be able to do them well enough on my own.

Your roots might start showing after a week, but how long does it take until they become obvious? Like, to the point where people aside from you would be able to notice them? You might be overly paranoid and go for touch-ups more often than you need to?

From what I've read on these forums, and there are so many good hair experts on here, going from dark to light, especially as light as you do, is very tricky and risky.

Your stylist probably needs to use a fine weave technique with lots of dimension. She/he also might want to stick with colors that are closer to your natural shade. Sometimes if the highlights are too chunky, the stylist is slicing instead of weaving the highlights in or using a shade that is far from your natural color it can cause your new growth to be too apparant.

If you are going to go back to orginal color I'd recommend seeing a stylist for that as well. I just don't trust box color simply because I don't know what's in it. The formula isn't specifically designed for your hair type/texture/color etc. It's designed for everyone, so you know they are going to put a substantial amount of ammonia and peroxide in it so even those with thicker/resistant hair will get a result.

He/she also might need to put some lowlights in of your natural shade as well next time.

I wouldn't advice trying to highlight it myself. You could make a huge mess for yourself and end up paying a small fortune to get it fixed as haircolorists typically charge by the hour for corrective color.

If you are tired of maintenance all together than you can go closer back to orginal shade but I would see a stylist for this as well. If you try to put a dark shade on top of blonde and don't know what you are doing you could end up with green hair. Anytime you are going three or more shades darker you have to add some of your natural pigment back in usually by using a demi-permanant first.

Do you have any pics you could post of your hair. I also have dark brown hair but would love to be a really light shade of blonde. How often are you getting your roots done?
I always thought having the dark hair underneath and blonde on top helped with roots (but it depends on your age whether you can pull it off)

This is the main reason I wish dark brunettes would stop bleaching. I think blond hair with dark roots is trashy and unattractive, so I understand your frustration when I think a lot of people would just let it go until they had a few inches of dark regrowth.

Why not just go back to brunette? It would be a lot less hassle.

Yeeeehawww! I'm the queen of trashy then. But it sure beats being half-bald from over bleaching.

I didn't mean let it grow out that long lol!

My biggest pet peeve is when girls with black, or I guess just dark hair, try to dye their hair platinum but it just looks yellow/orange. Out of all the dancers I've worked with I've only seen one who actually had platinum platinum dyed hair. Practically silver. I thought it was gorgeous. But most girls grab a bottle of peroxide and try do it at home and then they become orange.

^^^ Yup, I hate that too. Even worse when Asian and black girls do it. You're not fooling anyone, we know you're not blonde, so why fry your hair into a dull orange frizz when it would be glossy, dark, and beautiful if you just left it alone??

Don't mean to convey the impression that it's wrong to bleach one's hair, of course. I just personally find naturally dark hair much more attractive.

I dont think that girls with naturally dark hair are trying to "fool" anyone.

When I had pink hair I never expected people to believe that it was natural. I don't expect people to believe that my platinum hair is natural either. I'm neither swedish nor albino... plus my eyebrows and pubes are dark as hell (TMI, I know hehehehe)!

Some people like having red hair, some people like platinum, some (like dita von teese) would rather be brunettes than natural blondes.

The point is, that dull frizzy hair might make people happy, long contrasty roots might make people happy, and the only thing that you can really have control over is what comes out of your scalp. Getting upset or peeved about another persons hair is pointless.

Well, For my clients who are naturally dark but want to be super light, I do a crap ton of highlights then use a high lift permanent color between the foils on the outgrowth... with a high-lift, you can achieve up to 4 shades lighter and control a lot of warmth (although the effect on med-dark brown hair will never be truely ashy).

I then reschedule my clients in 4-8 weeks for just a high-lift tint application on the outgrowth- no foils at all. Basically, I only highlight them every other visit. That way the outgrowth never looks awful, there's less stress on the health of the hair, and my client's can maintain professional color without having to shell out hundreds of dollars and 2.5+ hours of thier day with every visit (single process color applications take about 40 minutes to process and start at $60).

I am white with honey colored eyes and think my dark hair is boring.
I dont think it'd look "trashy" at all as long as the stylist does a good job and you dont let your roots get really bad. My hair goes blonde pretty easy since its straight and fine to begin with

Thanks for all the great advice!!! I really like the idea of getting a high-lift color in between highlights, because getting highlights every six weeks or so drives me nuts, with the money and the time it takes! I'm going to make sure she's weaving it properly too because in the past I've had stylists that have just put in slices of color and it looked so wrong!

I'm getting tired of finding bad stylists in my tiny-ass town, but I have an appointment somewhere new for tomorrow, so fingers crossed
