    Default Moving is expensive!

I'm online getting quotes from Uhaul for my move from PA to Las Vegas. It's expensive. I knew it would be, but 2K is a bit steep considering all they are doing is letting me borrow a truck. I'm now looking into shipping by air. Although, I have a feeling it will be more expensive.

I really don't have much to ship, which is the sucky part. I have a bedroom set, tv and tv stand, a kitty tower and some clothes and beauty products. Oh! and a lamp. I would just sell my furniture and buy more in Vegas, but my cat has created scratches on every piece of furniture that I have.

I know I can't get around the prices, I have to take into consideration that I am moving clear across the country. I just needed to express myself for a moment. LOL

I think that does sound real expensive. When I moved from Maryland to Florida last October, I rented an U-Haul trailer and it was only like $250 for 6 days. 2K seems like a big step, even across country!

^^^ That's what I thought. Thanks! I'm going to look into alternate companies. There's gotta be other similar companies besided Uhaul.

That sounds like a complete rip-off!!

I don't think it should even cost that much to freaking HIRE movers to do the job for you!!!!! Hell, maybe you should look into that...

I hope you can find something more economical.

you really should consider selling your stuff or putting some of it in storage and just replacing what you need when you get out there. The prices you're talking about sound about right for that distance... maybe a tad high but it will still be in that ball park. I mean, unless you have some ultra high end stuff or family heirlooms, why lug it across the country?

Those moving truck companies charge you by the mile, plus you'll need to factor in fuel on top of what they charge.

It should NOT be that much. The only thing I can think of that might make it insane (other than them just trying to rip you off) is that you are picking up from or returning to an unpopular location. Makes a huge difference in price, so maybe poke around on their website.

Uhaul, BTW does NOT reserve a truck for you. They reserve the idea of a truck. Last time I needed one, I got it 12 hours later than I needed it and it was twice as large as needed as well. Check out Penske or Budget.

You can almost always get a better deal by calling several companies and pitching them against each other. "Oh, well Budget quoted me X amount". I've had them come down hundreds of dollars before.

I feel your pain. I had the same problem when I moved away from California. The moving truck companies charge their rates according to where you leaving from and where you are going. An ASS LOAD of people are moving away from California so it was pretty damn expensive for me...I want to say $1250. I had too much nice furniture to just sell it all so I paid the price. Good luck with your move!

It can suck, or it can be very cheap. They'll practically pay you to take a truck AWAY from Charlotte NC.

My brother recently moved from California to Texas and it was 2000 dollars with Uhaul. I don't know specifics but apparently they ended up charging him extra fees for another grand. It was ridiculous.

I think it had something to do with him moving from Newport Beach. They assumed he has thousands to blow.

I'd personally sell my stuff on criagslist. Most younger people don't care about scratches, you could always stain it again to better hide them but you could for sure get money from it instead of spending 2k, KWIM?

or have a garage/yard sale. When I moved from New England to SoCal I hired a professional moving truck to the tune of >$2000. When I came back I had a garage sale. There are some people who will lowball you for the entire lot which isn't necessarily bad because then there's nothing for you to dispose of or get rid of and you still have extra money on top of what you saved by not moving it.

If you can't find a company cheaper than UHaul... I've seen someone rent their smallest truck and then get one of their trailor hitches and attach it to the truck. I'm assuming it saved them on the per mile fee that they had to pay.

Funny. I'm getting ready to move from Vegas to Pa and have been trying to figure out how to ship everything, including my car

Try Budget or Ryder. Also, I saw an ad for one of those companies who delivers a container to your house, you fill it then they come back and pick it up to either store it or ship it to a new location. It was PODS, or somethingPODS. I can't remember. It looked really convenient.
