    Stability Ball

There's one at the gym. What the hell do I do with it? I tried sitting on it to do my crunches like K suggested, but I kept rolling off of it. I keep hearing good things about these dealies but I've got no idea what would be a good use for it. I'm trying to target my abs mostly right now, though toning my arms is always nice too ('cause I'm so gonna get 'em fixed this year, dammit)!

    Tips?

I can balance on my knees and lift ten pound weights on either side or both. But now that I'm done bragging... You could kneel on it with one foot flat on the floor and the other shin on the ball while you do handweight exercises. Also, just sitting straight up on the ball while doing various arm and shoulder exercises works your core because you have to stabilize yourself.

So it's meant to be used with hand weights, then?

Well, you can do the crunches or sit ups on it but if those are too hard you still work your core A LOT doing any exercises that require balance.

I can do things on a stability ball that should be illegal.

It was one of the few pieces of equipment to come out in the last 20 years that is actually worth having.

my favorite exercise on them is the stability ball "skier". trunk rotational exercise where you twist your knees on the ball, arms supporting body on floor. Killer shit.

    Or if you are bored:

Go to 3:40 of this video to see the exercise I'm talking about, but Jeff is doing it a bit crappily.

I spend half my day sitting on a stability ball in front of my desk, not even in a chair. It's a martial artists best friend.

I have the kind that have a bursting weight of 2000 pounds or so, so I can do a lot of my bench work resting on one. Usually unilateral kb presses.

    Piff right there.

Wow. Now I'm getting intimidated. Maybe I'm a bit too uncoordinated for this. I'm the most uncoordinated person alive, no joke - twice I've fallen off the elliptical machine and it's fairly common for me to trip and stumble on it. Yes, on an elliptical machine. I'm one of those that can't walk and chew gum at the same time, so perhaps I'd better just leave this thing alone.

Does your gym have classes? If they do, take a ball class, pay attention to what you do in it, and then just incorporate the moves into your regular workout.

If you do crunches on it...spread your legs out a bit to keep from rolling off. I dont actually sit on it, but more put it against my lower back to get serious concentration on my upper abs.

If you ever want to get your own at home I suggest checking Ross/TJ Maxx type places. I've seen the Gaiam, Everlast, and other brand names there for around $10. Also, its a great place to find yoga mats too.

I've fallen off the elliptical completely once. I'm not sure how I did it but I misstepped and fell backwards completely on my ass. I've tripped plenty of times and caught myself on the hand rail. It usually happens when I try to use the arm swingy thingies. Makes me wonder how I dance sometimes.

Anyways, I use my ball for crunches. I place it in the middle of my back to get a little more backbend before I contact up. I also do pushups on it by placing my feet on it and my hands on the ground. Sometimes I'll go from doing pushups in this position to pulling the knees up to my chest and rolling the ball forward. My favorite though is to hold the ball with my hands and lay flat on my back, bring my legs and arms up to make a "v" shape and then pass the ball off to my legs, then repeat the other way. These are the only ones that I've really stuck with doing. I actually got them out of the Body Sculpting Bible Abs edition. They have a good number of exercises complete with pictures. I wouldn't buy it though. I'd go to Borders and look at it for about 10 minutes until you got the idea of it lol.

I love my stability ball. It's great for crunches, working your ass and thighs and also good for stretches.

I do a few ab exercises on it:

    1. Crunches, the way cam said to do them.

    2. Lay on your back, hold the ball with your feet. bring your feet up in the air with the ball between your feet, grab the ball with your hands and then lower your arms down as far as you can behind your head, then raise back up and transfer the ball back to your feet.

    3. Lay on your stomach on the ball, feet and hands on the floor. Raise your arm and opposite leg, then switch, other leg other arm. really works the abs.

    4. get on the ball in the same position as above, with ball under your tummy. walk out on yoru hands until the ball is under yoru shins. So your like in a plank position. Hold that position for as long as you can. It's hard. Try to increase the time you can hold it. Then when yu can't stay like that anymore, walk your hands back in so the ball is under your tummy again and then get off it.

Your total core. Really burns the abs, but also works the chest, back, ass. You hold your whole body tight..it's like a plank.

    Good link.

Also there is likely a wall chart in the area where the gym keeps the balls that should have suggested excercises with easy to follow picture guide.

I don't really like my stability ball, but it is good for stretching (roll it under your back to stretch your middle) and I'll use it for abs when I'm at home (I hold it between my legs and lift them up). Here's a video that shows a bunch of ab stuff. http://youtube.com/watch?v=CZKS5SvIXNY

You can also use it to gently bounce on during labor! Not that that's your thing.

I don't think the words "gently" and "in labor" belong in the same sentence. If I'm ever in labor, I will be much more likely to be doing physical harm to a man than "gently" bouncing on a big rubber ball.

You should see what I did to poor K's hand during my tattoo - and that was just a tattoo and I didn't mean to hurt him. If he knocked me up and I was going through labor, he'd probably have to have the same hand amputated by the time I was done with it. It'd be like Glory and Tara.

this sounds silly, but you know those balls for kids with the handles? like a big stability ball with a handle that they bounce on? at my day job, in gym, me and one of the kids have races on those around the gym. it is SO good for your abs because you have to keep yourself balanced and be able to move forward instead of just bouncing in place.

not that i think it's likely that you have a large area to bounce around in or a child around to race so you dont look silly doing it alone, haha, but just saying..

Do they still make those? I never see them anymore! I had one when I was a kid and I loved it!
