Some Rules Kids Won’t Learn in School

Rule No. 1: Life is not fair. Get used to it. The average teen-ager uses the phrase "It's not fair" 8.6 times a day. You got it from your parents, who said it so often you decided they must be the most idealistic generation ever. When they started hearing it from their own kids, they realized Rule No. 1.

Rule No. 2: The real world won't care as much about your self-esteem as much as your school does. It'll expect you to accomplish something before you feel good about yourself. This may come as a shock. Usually, when inflated self-esteem meets reality, kids complain that it's not fair. (See Rule No. 1)

Rule No. 3: Sorry, you won't make $40,000 a year right out of high school. And you won't be a vice president or have a car phone either. You may even have to wear a uniform that doesn't have a Gap label.

Rule No. 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait 'til you get a boss. He doesn't have tenure, so he tends to be a bit edgier. When you screw up, he's not going to ask you how you feel about it.

Rule No. 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping. They called it opportunity. They weren't embarrassed making minimum wage either. They would have been embarrassed to sit around talking about Kurt Cobain all weekend.

Rule No. 6: It's not your parents' fault. If you screw up, you are responsible. This is the flip side of "It's my life," and "You're not the boss of me," and other eloquent proclamations of your generation. When you turn 18, it's on your dime. Don't whine about it, or you'll sound like a baby boomer.

Rule No. 7: Before you were born your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way paying your bills, cleaning up your room and listening to you tell them how idealistic you are. And by the way, before you save the rain forest from the blood-sucking parasites of your parents' generation, try delousing the closet in your bedroom.

Rule No. 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers. Life hasn't. In some schools, they'll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. Failing grades have been abolished and class valedictorians scrapped, lest anyone's feelings be hurt. Effort is as important as results. This, of course, bears not the slightest resemblance to anything in real life. (See Rule No. 1, Rule No. 2 and Rule No. 4.)

Rule No. 9: Life is not divided into semesters, and you don't get summers off. Not even Easter break. They expect you to show up every day. For eight hours. And you don't get a new life every 10 weeks. It just goes on and on. While we're at it, very few jobs are interested in fostering your self-expression or helping you find yourself. Fewer still lead to self-realization. (See Rule No. 1 and Rule No. 2.)

Rule No. 10: Television is not real life. Your life is not a sitcom. Your problems will not all be solved in 30 minutes, minus time for commercials. In real life, people actually have to leave the coffee shop to go to jobs. Your friends will not be as perky or pliable as Jennifer Aniston.

Rule No. 11: Be nice to nerds. You may end up working for them. We all could.

Rule No. 12: Smoking does not make you look cool. It makes you look moronic. Next time you're out cruising, watch an 11-year-old with a butt in his mouth. That's what you look like to anyone over 20. Ditto for "expressing yourself" with purple hair and/or pierced body parts.

Rule No. 13: You are not immortal. (See Rule No. 12.) If you are under the impression that living fast, dying young and leaving a beautiful corpse is romantic, you obviously haven't seen one of your peers at room temperature lately.

Rule No. 14: Enjoy this while you can. Sure parents are a pain, school's a bother, and life is depressing. But someday you'll realize how wonderful it was to be a kid. Maybe you should start now. You're welcome.

Sounds like somebody's life didn't turn out how they wanted.

I much prefer being an adult to being a kid.

My toys are bigger and more expensive and the women my age have breasts now.

I found school boring. I have way more fun at work, doing stuff I used to skip homework to do.

I guess they feel that somehow soldiers are protecting us from reading this in...German? Arabic?

Nonsense but hey, we gotta keep promoting the nationalism.

Teachers are responsible for the decline of literacy in America anyway. See "Look say reading".

Sauske, not to start a debate, but as a military child, let me share my perspective - there are many countries who would gladly walk in and take over or annihilate America were it not for the fighting men and women of our Armed Forces. Just the fact that they are there, at home or abroad, is important.

Her statement has little to do with the war and more with just our armed forces in general, and I thank God every day there are some people who see the incredible sacrifice so many make to make sure you sleep freely at night.

I thought the OP was quite cute. I'm forwarding it to my niece.

Most of those people want to annihilate us BECAUSE of our military(and related agencies).

Far from protecting us, they are a moral hazard.

If there is anything kids need to learn, it's that. Then maybe we can stop our cycle of foreign adventuring.

Overall good lessons and morals in that post. However, I have a few other lessons that I think should be included:

Rule No. 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping. They called it opportunity. They weren't embarrassed making minimum wage either. They would have been embarrassed to sit around talking about Kurt Cobain all weekend.
Although it is better to have "a" job than to bum around all day, keep in mind that in this day and age, minimum wage will NOT pay all the bills for you. Don't just settle for the burger flippin' job...always keep looking for bigger and better jobs, or at least for promotional opportunities. You don't want to stay flipping burgers all your life -- that IS below your dignity.

Also, keep in mind that while a job is important to have, school + internships is MORE important. Want to become a doctor?...McDonalds won't get you there; good grades + MCAT scores in college, however, will. So sometimes it is wiser to ditch the min wage job if it means focusing more on school or another route to a better, more desired career path. Work SMART, not hard. Working your butt off at a min wage "McJob" at the expense of grades or better opportunities is penny wise, dollar stupid. (NOTE: That's the lesson I learned in college, when I stupidly passively let a $7/hr job interfere with my classes and then I had to spend $1600 to retake a class after only earning $1000 at that wretched job all summer long)

Rule No. 11: Be nice to nerds. You may end up working for them. We all could.
VERY true. Also -- nerds are often very interesting, insightful people who are simply misunderstood and have less developed social skills.

HOWEVER -- I honestly believe that too many nerds/geeks/outcasts naively hold Rule #11 in too high regard. A lot of them take to heart what their parents always told them(very similar to Rule #11): Don't worry about not fitting in or doing things other kids your age are doing, just stay in tonight and do your homework. If you get good grades and do as you're told, you'll someday get the last laugh when you become anything you want -- a doctor, a lawyer, an astronaut, a banker! You'll be the successful one!! CAN I TELL YOU JUST HOW UNTRUE THAT IS IN TODAY'S DAY AND AGE?? Most of the "nerds" that I knew grew up to STILL have undeveloped social skills and low self-esteem. But in today's job market, employers put less emphasis on straight A's and more emphasis on someone that is well-rounded, charismatic, and sociable. Not to mention someone that has good networking, which can be somewhat hard for a lot of "nerds" if they're shy or antisocial and don't run into as many people as say, a frat house leader would. As a result, I've seen a lot of "nerds" NOT land the prestigious jobs that they were promised by their parents years ago. My infamous guy friend M--k is a GREAT example of this. He got decent grades and was a total goody two-shoes "victim of bullying" growing up, and a few years after college he was still stuck working at Acme Supermarket alongside jobsearching and living at home. He jobsearched like crazy but couldn't get hired, probably because he lacked good people skills and charisma -- the two things that MOST "nerds" lack -- along with simple lack of relevant job experience.

I am another example of someone "geeky" that was always working her butt off at McDonalds all through high school despite the teasings, did good in school, but couldn't find a job better than fast food/retail after college...HELLS WHY DO YOU THINK I EVENTUALLY TURNED "BAD GIRL" AND STARTED DANCING?? I did as my parents told me to do, but that didn't get me anywhere but (hypocritically) kicked out by those same parents when it became obvious that I couldn't pay my own rent on my McWages. And the one decent-paying job that actually hired me (i.e., dancing) relied on social skills, sex appeal, and sales skills for earning money.

    ...
Sh0t, I agree with you wholeheartedly. I enjoy the extra freedom and choices that I have as an adult. Although I (still) sometimes like toys, I prefer REAL sportscars over Matchbox sized ones. I prefer decorating my real apartment as opposed to playing house. Yeah I have a lot of bills and taxes to pay now as an adult, but as long as I can maintain my decent paying jobs(full-time office job + club cocktailing gig), that is very easily manageable.

I think the only adults that hate their lives, are the ones who:
    1. Are unhappy because they got stuck in a career or marriage that they didn't really want -- e.g., they did something to please their parents or someone else instead of themselves.
    2. They had unrealistic expectations for adulthood growing up(e.g., becomming a big-time CEO) and they became disappointed.
    3. They burned away many opportunities in their young adulthood by failing out of school, partying too much, getting into drugs, and/or earning themselves a few criminal convictions. Now that they're burnouts with nothing to show for their years spent on the planet, they look back and regret that they weren't more humble and ambitious.
    4. They were some of the few adults that were never able to find their niche in the real world. E.g., they couldn't land a job that paid above min wage(the very situation M--k and I were a few yrs ago), they got evicted/foreclosed upon and became homeless, etc.

Seriously. As a young adult, I hated my life only a few short years ago back when I was working low wage jobs and couldn't even afford an apartment or most of my bills. But I realized that my problems weren't simply "part of being an adult," they were simply "result of not having an adult job" that paid enough. Now that I have the basics, I don't find adult life to be that big of a deal at all. It's simple life skills, that's it.

So let's say we disband our military forces today. That's it. No more army, no more navy, no more armed forces of any kind.

How long do you think we'd last as a nation?

No offense Shot, but your post is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read.

And no, I'm not a Bush-loving supporter of our invasion of Iraq. It was one of the worst mistakes we've made as a nation. But the US military is bad? That's fucking retarded.

The OP rule's are obviously dated from the 90's. I doubt the war comment is talking about whats going on now.

Sounds like this person has a chip on their shoulder. I think most kids know most of these rules assuming they aren't trust fund babies, in which case the rules don't even apply. In 8th grade I was talking about how much it's gonna suck to have to work 5 days a week every bloody week...where not stupid.

I'm not trying to get defensive at a e-mail b/c I don't really care, but from a young persons view...we already know all this, no need to be condescending about it.

OMG! That list is soooooooooo old! My mom had that list posted on the fridge in 1986!

Hahahahahahaha! Baby boomers are the grumpiest generation of parents ever. Sucks having your offspring be more jaded and cynical than your own generation ever was.

I remember that from the nineties! You'd think they'd update it a little. Kurt Cobain, "Friends," saving the rainforest, a CAR PHONE?! Some of you younger women may not even remember car phones! (They were about the size of a purse and they plugged into the car's lighter outlet; phone calls cost about $5 a minute.)

I think it's great but sheesh, it's aimed at the last generation of teenagers, not this one. Time for an update!

Reminds me though, man, the nineties were a fucking awesome time to be a teenager.

I think what it's trying to say is that there a lot of kids/young adults out there who think they should have just because. It's entitlement issues. On the other hand there are a lot of great kids/young adults out there that have their heads firmly on their shoulders. Sometimes you just need to wander through the different neighbors in your own town, or get one or two towns over to see who these kids are.

I was thinking the same thing when I was reading that, lol. I was like car phones? I knew then this was outdated. Then the Kurt Cobain conversations, ha.

Still giggling about saving the rainforest, I'd forgotten about that. Anyone remember Fern Gully?

If we did that, we would be far safer actually. For one, it would remove any moral imperative people have to attack us. A major boon to attacking another nation is to be addressing some alleged misconduct. If we have no military or subversive foreign agencies, nobody will have that excuse to attack us.

We lasted quite a while without a huge military and only got into trouble once we started trying to flex our muscles. Every war we've had outside of the Revolution was entirely senseless from the American point of view.

And yes, the military is an instrument for evil, even if the members of it are good people. In my military career, I never once shot at anybody that I now consider a real enemy of the American public.

Maybe take it from my Marine role model, Smedley Butler:

In his book he recounts that his whole military career, including 2 medals of honor, was spent as nothing but a thug for politically connected big business. PERIOD. Nothing has changed since good ole Smedley has died, except the propaganda is even more silly today. If I had known he had written that book in 98, my life may have been much different. Better late than never, i suppose.

You can have all the "it's retarded" reactions you like, reality is reality. Let's just pick a few examples: killing 200,000 Filipinos during our first major experiment in overseas imperialism; invaded Mexico; invading Nicaragua to force their government to raise taxes so the Nicaraguan government can pay American banks back, etc.

Even during the Civil War, Lincoln gave an army group to a railroad magnate so he could us the military to clear Indians out of the way of a rail line in construction, skipping any kind of negotiations or land purchases.

And on and on and on and on it goes. I feel quite embarrassed I fell for the propaganda myself.

One would have to really put some blinders on to think that in the net, the American military as an institution has been a force for anything other than subsidizing big business empire building. The military is actually the biggest form of corporate welfare we have.

What Bush is doing is not controversial in the history of American foreign policy. Invading weak nations and doing what we will with them is an American tradition. We started with the Indians, went to the Mexicans, then the Spanish Colonies, Indochina and Asia, then Latin America and now the middle east.

Yeah I remember this. It needs to be updated, but the sentiment remains. Not to bring up an argument from another thread...but we live in a world where kids can pull annoying pranks in school that inconveniences a bunch of people and mommy and daddy scream and yell and stomp their feet saying UNFAIR(and they were the teenagers that the list in the OP was referring to) and their precious babies didnt even have to serve a crappy measly detention. And more people then not, even on here, agreed that that was great.

You dont have to BE Paris Hilton nowadays to feel the same overinflated sense of entitlement. Parents nowadays are killing...KILLING each other over getting their 2 year olds the hottest Elmo doll for Christmas. No fucking wonder the kids grow up thinking the world should revolve around them.

ROFLMFAO! Yes, because NO ONE would want to take our resources, our wealth, or just plain convert the country to *insert religion or social system here*.

Nah, the evil dictators of the world steer far clear of invading countries that don't have an army. That wouldn't be very fair of them, after all. *snorts*

I'd like to note I'm not a Bush loving warmonger either, but it's insulting that you think the men and women who make sure that you have the freedom to spout this drivel are better off working for the post office.

Yeah...saying we would be better off without a military is pretty damn insulting to the people putting their asses on the line to protect your freedom. I am NOT by any means a Bush OR Iraq war supporter...but we do NEED a military. We'd be dead in the water without them.

We just need a leader that knows where and when to deploy them instead of using them in his own little "thats for being mean to my daddy" and "sure buddy...I"ll get you ALL the oil money you want..after all, you kept me in coke all through college" "war".

Yea, I finished highschool and I STILL don't have a carphone.

Lol, and my exbf would have done well to read number six! He used to blame all of his vices on his parents. Like, when he dropped out of Jr College he said it was because his stepdad was a jerk who made him do too many chores so now he's lazy. Like... huh? It's called "responsibility", take it. I haven't heard anyone blame their parents for their vices in a long time, thank goodness. (Short of being actually abused, of course)
