Default Please help me choose a college class!!

I was signed up to go back to college in Jan but all that stuff happened at the end of the year so I was too sick to do it. Im going to sign up to attend Summer classes. I want to take 2 classes and am stuck with what to take. I want something somewhat easy. Im not great at essays so dont want to take English. Im thinking a History class but dont know which one? I think the other one will be Math because my husband is a math genius and can help me.

I love early history (like really early back to Egyptian times, etc) Anyone have advice on what a good fun history class would be?

    Heres my choices:

    Western Civilization
    History of the United States
    American Military History
    Women in American History
    Word History Since 1650

So, uhm, yea. Those are my choices and the only one Im thinking maybe is Womens History.

What class would I need to take to learn about earlier (WAY earlier) history? Is it not a history class and I need to look at something else?

    Thanks

Edit: I just looked into Anthropology and theres a class called "Magic, Witchcraft, Ritual, Myth and Religion" <--- that seems kinda cool and fun. Any ideas what would be involved in this. I dont even know what anthropology is... Is Humanities what I want? I DONT KNOW...argh....

I guess its not so much history I like but I love learning about other people, early civilizations, etc. US history would bore me to death...

That anthropology class sounds like fun. I'm taking a cultural anthropology class and I think it's really interesting. I wish I could have taken a myth and religion class instead!

I'd opt for D), all of the above, but I'm all un-decide-y.

If I had to put them in order of interest, I'd put the ones that go farther back at the top of the list. And it sounds like you would, too... Maybe that will help you decide.

I've learned that the most interesting thing to study is people, so anthropology is one of the areas of science I get the most fascination from. That's all anthropology is, the study of people and cultures.

Just so you know... You will probably have some essays for History. Some of my History classes in college were all essays, they were the only grades, it just depends on the teacher.

yeah if I had to choose from this list I would pick the anthropology class. It's probably a world religion type class with an emphasis on ancient indigenous peoples.

eta: agree with the above, you should probably take eng101 this summer too since you said you wanted to take 2 classes. You're not going to be able to get around writing whether it's a paper or an essay exam so you might as well knock it out over the summer.

also, don't forget to use to check out the professor.

I suggest look for an "ancient cities" type class... Or perhaps something on greek or roman history.

Audrey, the two you were interested in sound great. History is more a study of human progression--this happened and then that happened--so that can be interesting if it is a period of history you are interested in...truth is, I find all history interesting. Anthropology is more about the interaction of people within certain societies--more a study of how people live than the facts of what they do. Mythology, which I think is your biggest interest, is defined by Joseph Campbell, one of our greatest in this field, as "the human song"--as a scholar he searches for what is consistently human in seemingly unrelated societies. As he would say it, mythology puts you into accord with certain inevitable things in your own life: you find yourself identifying with someone who lived hundreds of years ago, realizing that in many ways that might have been you. My subject is writing, so I'm just a layman here and someone on SW will surely know much more about me than these fields. I've always found them pretty closely related, and sometimes they seem to borrow heavily from each other.

I guess the biggest advice I would have, though, is to ask around and find out who is the most interesting teacher--usually a good teacher, no matter what the subject, will fire your imagination and help you grow and open up new doors. I would go for the teacher rather than the specific course.

Good luck! I envy you for your ability with math. Can't do it to save my life.

Thats a good idea. Ill definately check out that website.

Im not too good at math BUT I like that theres only ONE RIGHT ANSWER whereas essays are all about perception and interpretation. And since my husband is good with math he can really help me when I get stuck.

OK, Im think that Anthropology and Math.

Ill probably take English during the fall semester. I think I will need a less rushed class for that since summer classes are shorter.

Oh yeah ratemyprofessor is awesome! If I have flexibility in choosing a class I try to pick the ones with good reviews. :-)

I adored western civ, and that's going oretty far back. My other favorite class was american history, but I had a great prof, who wasn't all america is perfect, and I learned so much.

my woman's history class was my LEAST FAVORITE EVER!!!!! Like, below math even, and I HATE math.

good luck! Oh, and I'd honestly pick a better professor as like, the top criteria. a teacher makes the class.

    I would pick Western Civ.

Someone already mentioned it, but if you're looking for something easy, checking your teachers ratings would probably help you more than the title of the class. I've had teachers take a class that I thought would be easy and enjoyable and just RUIN it.

I don't know if your school has it, but I use pickaprof.com religiously. It costs like five dollars, but I would seriously pay $50 cause it's worth it.

Everything above is right on the mark. It seems that at every college and university I;ve attended, the history department attracts only two types of instructors: droning, boring, read the book and listen to me lecture word for word from the book types, and exciting, motivating, interesting types. The trick is to find the latter and avoid the former.

If it is a research university, those who are famous for their research are not necessarily the best teachers, either.

And watch out for the profs who wrote the $90 textbook and require that you buy it.

Audrey, can you see what textbooks that are going to be used for the classes. I would recommend you go to the college's bookstore, find the Text section for the classes that interest you and browse what texts they use to teach those classes. When you find the textbooks you like, go to those classes.

The other thing I would do is see if there any web site / forums for your school where they rate / collect feedback on the Professors teaching the various classes you are interested in. In my opinion, the Professor teaching the course is as important as the topic / text.

Thats another great idea. Maybe Ill go tomorrow and see which book is used in that class and browse through it to see if it interests me.

See, this is why I post on SW. So many things I never would have thought of on my own! Im very excited to finally be going back to college.

Western Civ and World History (I think mine was since 1580) were the two most difficult classes I've taken and I'm a history major. Lots and lots of writing.

Anthropology classes (unless you group linguistics courses under that) were some of the easiest.

It all definitely depends on the professor. In junior college I built my classes schedules around the professors I wanted to take and not the courses (as long as they fit my transfer requirements). Now that I've transfered it is a little more difficult to do that since my selections for classes are limited.

i would go for the magic etc class if i were you, but other than that, i say US history. the rest are classes i personally would never consider taking. i took us history from 1865 to the present my freshman year and i enjoyed it.

but, like everyone said.. man does the teacher make a difference. i had some SHITTY teachers. the teacher for that class was cool, but when i took (and dropped) US history up to 1865, it was so boring and horrible because of the teacher. assignments can vary so much based on that, too. 1865+ we had 3 tests and a paper. prior to 1865 the guy had a few writing assignments and tests.
