Default Advice on selling handmade cards.

So, I've been getting really good at making handmade cards, and 3 of my penpals so far have sugguested that I sell them. I have no clue how to do it, what to charge, if it would even be worth it.......

so, any advice on that type of thing is really apreciated. I'll add a picture to give you an idea of them.

I'd say they cost 20- 50 cents to make, but some of them can cost as much as 2$ if I use expensive papers or chipboard. I already have enough supplies to make hundreds I bet.

They take anywhere from 5 minutes to 30+, the average is 10 I guess. I really love making them, so if I could make even a little money doing it, that'd be too cool.

This one is about 20cents in cost I guess.

This one is more like 50cents I think.

Those are great! Have you looked into etsy.com? It's kinda like an e-bay for crafty things.

You might also just try going door-to-door to smaller (i.e. NOT chain-owned) boutiques and gift shops in your area, though this is trickier. Some may be willing to take a few cards on commission. Others may buy a few outright and see if they can sell them. Some won't be interested at all. If any shops DO say yes, leave your contact information with them so they can find you if the cards do sell. Don't count on them to call you, though. You should probably check back with them in a few weeks to see if anything has sold or if they'd like to reorder.

You can also try constructing a website -- some overhead expenses here -- and selling them directly to consumers. You would need advertising for this, or a vigorous word-of-mouth campaign.

    Good luck!!

Those are beautiful! There's a lady at my daughter's school that sells handmade cards she sells hers by the box. I think she puts 10 in a package. You should be able to get $3-$6 individually, maybe mark down the price if you package them in bulk, like 20-25 for a variety pack of 10 or something. Don't forget to write "Handmade by Lola Rose" on the back!

As far as a website goes, why not just make a myspace page?

ok, so I looked at etsy, but the issue there is that there are just so many sellers..... so it's very consumer oriented. most of the ones I see on there are just so cheap for how much they cost and the time they take.

There are a lot of cute boutiques around, so that's a good idea, but I'm afraid I'd make too mittle per card. However, it could end up working out really well too. I could sell them for 1/2 of what the boutique sells them for, right? So maybe 1.50+ per card. That would be good!

I also think maybe I should see about teaching some cardmaking classes....... the local art centers around here really have nothing like that offered. Most of the scrapbooking shops already offer cardmaking classes tho. Maybe Micheals or a craft store too.....

I really like the idea of making sets of 8 or 10, and selling them like that. I think I'll work on some of those today.....

so, if anyone is interested, I'd love to make you cards too! hehe.

I'm really excited This could work out so nice, and even if it doesn't, at least it'll be fun.

I also thought about this: A lot of bigger synogues have gift shops... maybe I could make some holiday cards to sell through there too!

Excellent idea. Boxes of invitations would be nice too.

As an aside, a couple of years ago my daughter had a rollerskate party for her birthday. We made handmade invitations with hand torn paper, used puffy paint to draw skating stick figures on the front, glued pony beads for the wheels of the skates, and made glitter streaks coming out the back of the skates to convey speed. Then we wrote all the info inside with a gold metallic paint pen. ALL THE MOMS LOVED THE INVITATIONS!!! It was so much fun
