    Default Flat Irons: Which One?

I'm going to do it. At 31 years old and having been back dancing for about 2 months after about a 4 year break, I'm going to buy a flat iron and try out a straight style.

A lot of the girls at my club keep asking why I don't try to straighten my hair in order to try something different. It is currently in its natural state - dark brown, curly, just about down to my butt, and very thick.

The only experience I've had with straightening was back in 1994 for my high school prom. It was done at a salon with a hair dryer and brush(es). The stylist took about 45 minutes to do it and I could smell my hair burning. That right there didn't sit well with me. I liked how it looked, but then a few hours later it was curling again. It's taken me this long to try it again.

Last weekend one of the girls showed me how quick it was to get a small bit of my hair straight with her straightening iron. I asked how much it had cost her and she said $40. I stopped into a salon store in the mall recently and asked the lady about straightening irons. She suggested something with ceramic plates, and a high-quality for my thick hair. The irons she showed me were $89.95 plus tax, more than double the $40 I was expecting. I stopped into bed bath & Beyond today and found some irons there as well. I think every single one I saw boasted ceramic plates. Some were $40 and others were $69.

Should I go with a professional quality one? Does it matter? What price range should I go with? Any particular brands or models anyone can recommend to me would be great. I feel very hair-stupid right now..

Some of the top ones that we like are CHI, Sedu, GHD...maybe Solia too I'm not sure. Personally, I my CHI. Search Body Business for the brands I mentioned and you'll get all sorts of info! has good prices and pretty extensive reviews too you should check that out as well. We on SW tend to like the pricier irons.

I've said it in a bunch of threads, but what the hell?

Ceramic plates are good- they heat evenly and tend to glide more effortlessly through the hair.

If you have coarse, very thick, or frizzy/poufy hair you may want to spend a little extra for toumaline plates... they emit negative ions which cause the outter cuticle of the hair to constrict resulting in smoother, glossier looking hair. If you have fine hair skip the tourmaline, it'll make you look limp.

Look for temprature controls which actually display the exact temp of the iron, either with a dial or a digital read out (preferred). You want to use your iron at the hottest setting it takes to straighten your hair in one fluid, slow moving pass. Going higher and you're just causing unessacary damage to the health of your hair and the the flat iron. Going higher than 392 degrees on color treated hair will result in faster fading and dull looking color.

I prefer plates with rounded edges so I can create curls and waves with my flat iron. They also tend to crease the hair a little less if you take bigger sections.

In my expierience, a good flat iron will set you back at least $100. I use the Ergo Prosleeker Tourmaline in the salon.

Thanks, LoveSexMoney and Mia for all of those details. Mia, I had read some of your responses to other threads, but wanted to be sure recommendations were based on the fact that my hair is very thick and long.

I don't want to end up buying a straightener just to be disappointed in the time it takes to get my hair straight, nor do I want to spend an arm and a leg to find that it wasn't necessary. I am looking through the reviews on folica.com and they will help guide me. The plan is to make a decision and order/buy sometime next week.

Granted, I may end up just spending the $229 on the ERGO Prosleeker 1 Tourmaline Flat Iron to be safe and not worry about not having a high-quality iron

I don't know of ANYBODY who has tried the GHD and have gone back to other brands. CHI, sedu, Tourmaline I have tried them all and they have nothing on the GHD.

The only cheaper brand that I would recommend is the MAXI GLIDE it is really impressive.

BTW I have long, thick, curly, wavy afro type hair and the GHD straightens it beautifully and it will last even in the humidity.

I have went through a couple of flat irons and my favorite one is the Solia. I like it because my hair is very course and it goes all the way to 450. Folica is a great site to start and read the reviews though!

Agreed. I choose my flat iron for a few reasons- some of them that wouldn't be a consideration for those who want it for personal use only, like weight and warranty. I'm sure you can find an iron for less than the Prosleeker that has ceramic/tourmaline & rounded plates, an accurate temp read, and gets upto 400+ degrees.

OMG why on earth would you want to spend all that money and time straightening THAT hair??? I would give my eyeteeth to have curly hair down my ass! Personally, I think you should stop listening to the dimwits at the club and keep your hair naturally curly-beautiful! When they say "something different" - it's really an oxymoron because if you straighten your hair you'll look just like everybody else

I vote NO on the flatiron for you!

The first straightener I bought was a magic ionic and it broke after only 6 weeks. Then i bought a Sedu straightener and it works pretty well. A couple of months ago, I bought Her Styler Forever after a friend recommended it and it is the best one yet. It has ceramic plates like the Sedu straightener, but it heats up even faster. I think how much money you spend also depends on your hair texture. Meaning that if you have fine hair to begin with then you probably don't need to spend like $175 on a straightener. I normally have very curly medium texture hair, which is why I bought one of the more expensive straighteners.

I second. Plus - if it is curly and down to your butt, straightening might make it too long. There is an optimal length for hair.

i just dont know anymore. for a while i prefered the sedu and i think i still like it better than my ghd. I bought my friend the ghd for xmas but she liked my sedu better and we traded.

I was going to return the ghd for another sedu but got lazy and still have the ghd. My hair just doesn't seem as healthy with the ghd as it did with the sedu.

My SO bought me the chi nano but it broke after a year and he said that did the best job. I think maybe he was right.

I bought a krembs wet to dry iron 4 years ago and that is still running strong. I also bought the T3 and hated it for my hair. Returned it the next day.

Maybe i will repurchase the chi nano or try the prosleeker?

mia, you think the prosleeker is that much better than the chi nano?

For professional use, I wouldn't consider it since it only gets up to 356 degrees- it wouldn't do a damn thing on my clients with coarse hair. For personal use I think those with fine-medium textured hair would be happy with it.

I've got the CHI, GHD, Sedu, T3 and FHI. FHI is hands down the best. It's not as widely available so it doesn't get as much press, just don't go with the cheapest model without the temp dial, it won't smooth thick hair.

FHI gets hotter than T3 and GHD straightens faster than them and I end up with smoother hair with some bounce and life. CHI and GHD tie for my 2nd choice, but they make hair much stiffer without any movement and with less shine (which may or may not be what you are looking for). My hair is curly/wavy naturally and the Sedu and T3 won't keep it straight for more than a few hours.

    Hope this Helps!

I'm gonna disagree and say that anyone who has been wearing the same style that long NEEDS to change it up!

^^ I agree. You don't want to fall into a major style rut. It gets boring. I have wavy/curly hair and I wear it curly for a while and then I straighten for a while. Every time I change I get so many compliments. Variety really is the spice of life.

Thanks for your thoughts. I do *love* my curly long hair... I don't want to cut it short.. been therem done that.. only gets poofy. It used ot be very short as a child and kids made fun of me BIG time because of it. My long hair is a symbol for myself of the changes and progress I've made mentally since those depressing days.

As for straightening, I wanted to do an iron because it's not permanent. It gives the option of straight for a night and then wash and curly again the next day if I want. Chemical straghtening was something I've thought about and that has been suggested.. but no thanks. Not for me.

My hair has had the same style for a long time now.. so straightening it would be different. As for it being too long, I tend to get very positive comments on just how long my hair is. Some guys just seem to love very long hair, which most dancers don't have.. probably in part because of its level of maintenence.

And if I try straight one night and absolutley don't like it, I can always sell my iron!!! lol
