Can this be done with a curling iron?

Do I need expensive product for this? I'm still trying to find a way to make my short hair soft and feminine, and I really like this look. I think it would suit me well. Curling iron, sponge rollers, what does this?

I'd wet set with a light volumizing gel and velcro rollers, then comb out with lightly Grit Wax (or any other light hold, no shine pomade/styling creme) covered fingers when dry.

Wow i would LOVE to wear my hair like that, thou i dont think it would suit me
I would put setting lotion on damp hair and put in some medium velcro rollers, wait for it to dry and then tease the curls into place.
It would probably work well with heated rollers too
Also if you can do pin curls they would look fabulous.

Damn, I really need to find that Grit Wax! I have pomade and styling creme out the wazoo though, I'll use something I have. Bummer on the velcro rollers, I already have two curling irons (different sizes), two sets of hot rollers, and a huge bag of different-sized sponge rollers, and now I need to buy velcro ones! Fuck!

I've never used velcro rollers. Do you sleep on them? Do they snarl your hair?

I love the Fedora Lounge! I'd be posting there if they'd let me, but you have to have an ISP email account and I don't. I've been reading that site for a long time now though! It's awesome!

Maybe I'll try hot rollers first and then buy the velcro ones if that doesn't work? Looks like maybe I should use bigger ones on top above my face and then little ones everywhere else, you think?

When I had short hair, I got that look by using a jumbo curling iron (like 2inch barrel) and curling all over (it gives hair plenty of volume, and curls just the ends under).

Using a combo of wax and volumizing spray, I tousled it up. And whala! Great hair.

I got a similar effect with jumbo velcro rollers on damp (not wet, just slightly damp) hair. I would put them in, do my makeup, do a few chores, and when it was dry, shake 'em out and go.

God she's stunning. Good luck with the hair style. Are you still doing the wig for work all the time?

I don't know how long you're hair is, but I think these are cool too:

^^^ I like those too, but my hair is SHORT. I can't talk about it too much or I'll start crying again. I'm really trying to make the best of this but every time I think about how short my hair is I get teary... that evil, evil fucking woman. I will never forgive her.

I'm gonna give it a go with hot rollers here in a minute. I'll post pics if it works!

And holiday, yeah, obviously I still am since you just saw me in it today! That was a trip, it was nice to see you. The wig is starting to look ratty though and since it's synthetic curls I can't get it brushed out, and on Monday I think I'm going for a brighter red so I may just dispense with the wig altogether. That's why I need a very feminine, classic short hairstyle. I don't care if I wind up looking like Lucy Arnaz, it's better than looking like your neighbor's mom.

The good news is, my hair is longer than I thought. The bad news is, I can't get anything remotely like the curls in the pic. I guess I'm gonna have to go buy velcro rollers. Here's what a combined effort with hot rollers and a 2" curling iron got me... I think I sort of look like Mary Pickford here. It's livable, but I want sexy tousled curls. Would velcro rollers give me the Marilyn effect?

Suggestions for feminine, classic/vintage hairstyles more than welcome...

^^^ You think? I think it just looks old-ladyish. I look like my grandmother.

G-d damn that bitch to hell, the only thing I care about appearance-wise is SEXY HAIR and ever since she cut it off I haven't been able to have it. I know there is a way to make this hair sexy, there has to be. I wish I could figure out what it would be. Should I get the cut angled so it's not straight, but rather shorter in the back and longer in the front?

babe- your hair is too LONG for that first style!

but I've done it on a friend, and I did it with a 2'' iron and any type of light wax or spray gel, with some hair spray.

Yeah, it feels shorter to me than it actually is, I guess! I suppose that's a good thing. So what do I do with it now?? I really love the "sexy tousled curls" look and I can't get it!! Maybe I'll go try again with the sponge curlers... *sigh*

I wish I could find pincurl pins. It might look really good pincurled but I can't pincurl it with bobby pins because the curls get that crimp in them. Besides, it's really difficult to pincurl one's own hair, especially in the back.

I wish I could come do your hair!

I think you should try doing "shirly temple" curls, and then brush them out and scrunch them with a nice waxy/pomade type product. I did that for work when I first vut my hair, and it was the SAME length as yours is.

i wish I had a photo, but it was way sexy.

Shirley pincurled, didn't she? I've never been able to pincurl the back of my own hair, and I can't find pincurl pins anymore. It doesn't work right with bobby pins.

I have sponge rollers and tried them right after my hair was cut a few weeks ago. Got this look from it, which is a bit too "Depression-era broke housewife" for my taste.

I think an angled cut with shorter hair in back and longer in front is HOT. Looks best with very straight hair and no bangs, IMO.

Shirley Temple had ringlets - is it not possible to get those with sponge rollers? Like, wrap the hair around the roller from one end to the other in a spiral? Or will that just make a spiral curl? Or is that the same thing as ringlets? LOL

I would try sleeping in some sponge rollers and see how that goes. Or you could always try a perm...

Sponge rollers gave me the result in the post right above yours. I think I rolled them horizontally though. Tomorrow I'll roll them vertically and see how that goes. (And yes, ringlets and spirals are pretty much the same thing.)

I don't want to perm my hair because I'd like to (*sigh*) grow it out again, and I'd like it to stay strong and healthy. I just need to learn how to style it, and I've had long hair for nearly all my life so I don't really know how to make short hair look sexy. That's what I'm trying to learn. The wig I've been wearing to work is acutely uncomfortable and it's getting ratty; I'd like to come up with something sexy and alluring that doesn't involve a tangled wig and combs digging into my scalp for several hours a day.

I'll try the sponge rollers again tomorrow and if that doesn't work I'll head over to Sally Beauty for some velcro ones this weekend. I don't know if there's a significant difference between velcro and sponge rollers or not.

As for very straight hair, it doesn't suit my face or body type. I look best with big hair and curls.

I always get my hair snagged in velcro curlers. I hate those things!

You could always try e-mailing Ninas Retro Hair Salon http://www.ninasvintageandretrohair.com

They'd definately know, I went in the other day to have my mane tamed and they have pics like that around.

    Can't hurt.

Ooh, somebody there has really gotten the hang of fingerwaving! I wish I could do it. Nice rolls there, too! I wish we had a salon like that! Whenever I talk about rolls and pincurls and fingerwaves at the salon, they just stare at me like I fell out of the sky.

I'm going to try sponge rollers tonight and see how that goes, and maybe get some velcro ones if I go out shopping tomorrow. I finally found pincurl clips too, yay! So at least in a week or so I'll be able to pincurl.

I just started using velcro rollers. I have really a long, super thick, crazy mane of hair. The velcro rollers give me these huge, really soft looking curls that are SO pretty, but they get snagged in my hair so much that I hardly like them The means (snagged hair that gets frizzed out) isn't worth the end.

Yeah it's my latest discovery over here, I went into have my hair done as a 'dry run' for an event in April. I'll post some pics on here if I don't forget to take any.
She uses setting lotion ALOT !

I'm in L.A and NYC for the summer and really gonna miss that salon it's got a great atmosphere. They should totally open them over in the States.
