Sally Beauty Supply is selling as a kit for about $55. The website looks pretty awesome, but of course it does, it's an ad. Has anyone had any experience with this kit in the real world? Is it worth the money?

they look way wierd. And not that easy. I wouldn't pay 55$, but I'd pay 20. If you want something like that buy the little sponge curlers and sleep in them. I have a few sets, all from cvs/target, and all under 20$. I have ones that look sorta like perm curlers, but spongy and black that work so great! And twistie ones, and velcro curlers. if you want a photo and better review of each, lemmie know.
heh. I feel like I'm stalking you yek!![]()
I have sponge curlers already. Is there a substantial difference between sponge and velcro?

Hell-to-tha-no!
That is just a glorified straw set! You can do the same thing at home for under 5 bucks. All you need are straws, pins and end papers. Sponge curlers/regular curlers wont give you the same effect.
Straws? Like drinking straws? Do explain, I'm keen to hear this!

Yup yup drinking straws!!! This is how we - 'sistas"- do it.
This explains the process. http://www.blackhairmedia.com/hairhowto.htm If you want slightly larger curls, you can use thicker straws (like the micky D ones) or perming rod (you can buy those from a beauty supply store for like 2 bucks a pack)

For some reason I can't edit my above post.
Anyways the instruction below might be a little clearer
Step 1: Shampoo and condition your hair with your normal products designed for your current hair type, texture and condition.
Step 2: Apply tennis ball size of mousse, gel or setting lotion.
Step 3: Start with a complete pack of plastic drinking straws (you can buy at the grocery store). Cut the straws to match the current length of your hair. The straw should extend approximately 1-2 inches below the ends of your strands.
Step 4: Separate hair into 1/4 to 1" sections. (The smaller the section, the tighter the curl)
Step 5: Using end papers (available from any beauty supply location), fold paper over the ends of the hair before rolling with straws
Step 6: Carefully wrap individual sections of hair around the straw lengthwise to form natural spirals. Start at the ends of your hair and roll towards the scalp.
Step 7: Use bobby pins to anchor the new curl. Pin inside the base of the straw, lengthwise next to the scalp. For a tighter anchor, pin at the top and the bottom of the straw.
Step 8: Dry hair under hood dryer until 100% dry.
Step 9: Let hair completely cool before unwrapping the straws.
Step 10: Release curls by carefully unwinding the straw rollers from the hair. Go slow and unwind one rollers at a time.
Step 11: Apply a shine serum and carefully arrange new curls with fingers.
That's amazing! I'll have to try that sometime, though it'd be harder to do on myself. I don't know why that never occurred to me, especially since I've used curling rods for pincurling before and they work the same way as the straws here, you just don't slide the curl off and pin it flat. Thanks for sharing, I'm definitely going to try that soon!
I love it when black women have those gorgeous spiral curls and I've always wondered how they got them! One question though, what exactly are end papers and what do they do? How do you use them?
Oh, okay. Like just the very tips? The bottom, what - inch, half-inch? I'm guessing from the pics in the link. What exactly are they for? I had a perm when I was about ten, but that was almost twenty years ago and I've completely forgotten the process!
the website does look cool! i think I would be tempted if it were 20 or 30 dollars but 50 seems like too much....

Its a little pricey, but what a cool idea!! I use hot rollers which seems easier, but I think you would get a much better curl from the curlformers.

That sounds way too difficult to do!
Wahoo, I found pincurl clips on Amazon! I'm gonna buy them. I think pincurls would give a better curl effect, I just haven't been able to find pincurl clips and bobby pins leave those ugly dents.
Gonna try that straw trick sometime soon though. Sounds like fun!

They want $13 to ship a $6 box of pincurl clips! I'm not paying $20 for pincurl clips. I wish I could find them somewhere in Oregon! I would drive an hour for them! Sally doesn't have them and I can't find them anywhere, ARGH!!
Maybe I'll try again with bobby pins but they dent the damn curls so much. Have I mentioned I'm never going to forgive that woman for cutting off my hair? Long hair is so simple, you don't have to do anything with it and it still looks sexy. *sigh*
