Default When custies request you to dance to a song and...

It's one of those songs you KNOW other dancers are going to get pissed off about, either because it's
    "Their" song....
It's played out/annoying/or just really bad
OR you know the customers are going to hate it, like say it's a hip hop crowd and he wants you to dance to heavy metal....or vice versa.

I know this might not be a situation that happens alot, but it has to me twice already at my new club. I was sitting with a guy and he asked me to dance to a particular song. He handed me a 10$ to do it. I really didn't want to, but he was my only chance of making money that night. It was dead and he was my only hope.
The song he wanted me to play had another girl's stage name in the title, and I wasn't sure if she maybe thought of it as "her" song....
    It's also really played out.....
Well I went against my gut and did it anyway. I totally got dirty looks and rolling eyes. I felt like everyone hated me. I confronted the girl and she was super annoyed. I told her that he payed me to and I was sorry, but she still was pissed at me.
Another night it was 100% hip hop crowd, and a custy payed me 20$ to dance to a rock song he "just had to hear". OMG was everyone ever pissed off. It totally did ruin the vibe but I am not one to turn down a 20 dollar bill, especially from a guy that had potential VIP time written all over him. He did end up taking me to VIP and spending a nice amount.
Shit. Now I am afraid people are going to start to hate me at my new club. I have been doing so well, keeping to myself and feeling really comfortable. Now, I don't want to go in to work tonight. I am a little embarassed about this shit, I know it sounds silly but I am....
I have to go in. I am just gonna keep my head down in the DR and my head up on the floor.

We don't get much choice in what we dance to, so that alleviates any ownership of certain songs to certain dancers. I prefer it to the alternative.

^Yeah, alot of clubs are different. I actually prefer that way as well. It's nice to be able to pick music but at the same time it's presented problems. Girls "claiming" songs and whatnot....
It doesn't make sense to me, because if you really like a song chances are there's going to be a bunch of other people that like it too. I can't even count how many times I have come in with a CD thinking that nobody has played this before! Then the DJ tells me he has the song in the system and girls dance to it all the time.
At my old club there were these two girls who danced to only Guns N Roses, they claimed to be the first ones to play the songs, and basically claimed the band. Come on! GNR came about in the 80's for petes sake. How can you claim a band like GNR in a SC?? I remember one time I requested "Welcome to the Jungle" and the DJ was like "Oooh, I wouldn't do that if I were you" These girls would harass anyone else who would play GNR.

Maybe you can mention that some dancers may be territorial over certain songs so if they request something, they should turn that $20 bill into twenty ones and tip you when the song comes on. That would send a signal to everyone around that you may have specifically asked for HER to play it and that you aren't doing anything to cause trouble.

I'm glad to hear that the second guy ended up getting the VIP; I'm sure that was all the 'proof' you needed. I wouldn't sweat it. Just encourage the guy to make a display of tipping you for playing HIS song (*smiles).

if you can, tell a girl before you go up what's going on so then it doesn't seem like you're making up excuses later.

and, if it feels wrong, don't do it. number one lesson for me working in a sc.

I wouldn't have said anything at all, and definitely would not have apologized. Fuck her, she doesn't own the song.

true. and normally I would agree. I guess it just depends.
I had a really good friend of mine use a song of mine that I dance to every night I work (which is about 2-3 times a week) and it's one of my favorite sets. She always gushes about how much she loves it, and then one night when we were both working (and we'd both chatted a few times) she just waltzes up and does one of the songs to the two song set. (it's not like it's in the top forty either, but it is a well known michael buble song.) I was kind of in shock because I was saving it for later on in the night.

Now-- no one OWNS a song. and you don't owe an apology at all-- but I just know that in my case, it really miffed me off that this was someone I considered a close acquaintance or even a friend.

two different situations totally, but having been on the side of having this happen, I can understand.

But since you don't know her, and don't have that sort of relationship were a heads up would be appreciated and noted, then oh well--

however, I still stand by the idea that if something doesn't feel comfortable for you aside from pissing off someone else-- if you think it's going to fuck with your stage, or your working environment, then I wouldn't do it.

Well I went in and nobody seemed to give me the evil eye
I agree with what you said Fancy on don't do it if it doesn't feel comfortable. I think I am good for now, and if the situation presents itself again I definately will know how to handle it better.
Normally I wouldn' make such a big fuss over something silly but it's just the fact it happened twice in a week and I'm new at the club.

Whatever..I hate it when girls CLAIM a song..or even worse a whole band!!! Um...unless you were IN the band..no.
Next time just have the DJ say.."this is by request for the gentleman sitting by the bar" so its clear.

the dj always says "going out by special request" which lets us know a CUSTOMER asked for it, and that generally nips any complaining in the butt. we are 100% not allowed to complain to the dj or other dancers about customer requests. they try to play what we want most of the time though, so most of us don't have a problem with occasional requests.

also: the only time i "claim a song" is if i brought it in and i know full well no one else has danced to it there before (at least in the past few years). even then i'm pretty good about letting someone "borrow" it occasionaly. the only reason i'm a little possessive over a few songs is because i've worked out a routine or because i have a strong attachment to that song/am known for dancing to it (such as portishead - glory box... i can't tell you how many girls have told me they're stealing it if i ever leave).

Amen. Fuck that middle school drama bullshit.

I've had girls "steal" sets from me and I really don't give a rat's ass. I can look sexy dancing to polka, and if the song's good enough to be copied, the guys in the club probably don't mind hearing it a couple times. Or I just choose another song out of the possible THOUSANDS of songs in the world to dance to...

I always fire out the "by request" line...usualy in hopes that the custie .will tip the girl on stage (sometimes they just come up to me and ask for a song, but I always make it match the girl). I had one girl that would always clain the newest hotteset song as "her song" and she would have a TON of them, more than I could EVER play for her in a night..... worst part is if i would play just ONE of them for another girl..all HELL would break loose....even WORSE??? I was dating her at the time ( please note the word WAS....thank you). Personaly I TRY to accomodate but if a customer wanted you to dance to a song and paied you???? Do it and blame me...Ill take the heat, lol.
