    Default Advice on foundation/powder?

So, I'm going shopping for new makeup this afternoon and would LOVE some advice from you all before I spend the money.

My dilemma is this: I have relatively clear skin, combination of dry and oily, a super pale but even skin tone, and break out maybe a few times a month (hormonal), but usually my face is pretty happy. I want to find a new powder to replace my old one (Lancome...didn't like the coverage) and possibly a good concealer or foundation for spot coverage of undereye circles, breakouts, etc.
I usually just cover any problem areas with foundation, but should I be using concealer instead? I'm such a novice at make up use and application All i do for work is cover spots with foundation and then apply pressed powder over my whole face, use a little bronzer on my cheeks, use blacktrac eyeliner & mascara for eyes, and if I remember, lipliner and gloss on the lips.
Yeah... I look like I'm 15 at work

Anyways, I've read some good things about MUFE on here, and was thinking about trying it at the Sephora store, but I'm not going to be using a foundation to cover my entire face, just the spots, so I'm not sure it's the best option?

If you want a minimal look with your foundation I'd suggest Laura Mercier products. They have the best tinted moisturizer (if your face is at all oily I'd get it in oil-free) that offers a medium coverage, which is a bit more than you'd expect from a moisturizer. I wear the porcelain color and its one of very few lines that come pale enough for me and without a lot of orange/yellow in it.

They have a few different concealers too which hold like no other and their powder (loose translucent setting powder) is my all time favorite. I like the way loose goes on versus pressed. This stuff makes my skin flawless.

MUFE doesn't make a bad product imo. I love their lift concealer for under eye circles. I think I've used just about everything buut their foundations so I'm not of much help. You shouldn't be using foundation really over your whole face since your only 20. I'd just use it where it needs help with redness/ acne and blend the living crap out of it. Its not time to start wearing a "mask" of foundation yet. I know a lot of people will suggest All Mat. I never really liked the color. They make a few great colored primers. The blue one makes the hugest difference in how bright my skin looks under foundation.

^^^ how bad is it to use foundation and full theater strength makeup for work 2-3 times a week? I like jenna jameson's type of makeup in the club which is rather heavy but looks so smooth... I don't do that yet, but I want to soon.

I use prescriptives and LOVE LOVE LOVE it. It's combined with an undertone also so you get a near perfect match. Also, you can get your powder that I like. My favorite product from them though is their loose bronzing powder. I REALLY love it...to death.

i used to work for prescriptives & i cannot stop reccommending it to everyone i know even though i don't work there anymore (&therefore technically have to!)

the flawless foundation & concealer is amazing, especially under lights onstage or for photoshoots.

Prescriptives is nice but doesn't have that stripper longevity.
Armani does and is very light with full coverage.
    Dior Forever is aptly named.

Chanel 'floated' on my face. It never really was ON my face... just kinda dusting around. I heard it's a common problem, too.

Basically I looked like a day old sugar donut in that stuff.

It was definitely the Vitalumiere I used... like... three times. Before it floated off my face like a Macy's balloon.

    Nobody has suggested Minerals yet?

The bare minerals smooth and hide blemishes so well I hit them with my brush and in 5 seconds I've got super bare looking non-pimply skin.

Well I went to the Sephora store and was disappointed... it was within a JC Penney store and was tiny I had no idea we even had one here until a girl at work told me about that one and yeah...its not a "real" Sephora. No MUFE. Actually, they only had a few brands and wanted to sell me Smashbox foundation, which I'm not really familiar with.

    A few quick things:

Lysondra, did you like the Armani or the Dior better for work?
Aubreyyy- do you use minerals for work? does it last all night?

Thanks for replying! I just got home from work and I'm exhausted!
I'll probably have more questions tomorrow

I definitely liked the Dior better for work. This shit is amazing.

Let me put it this way. I knew I was working over 12 hours last night and I didn't even bring it with me. And I had 4 45 minute shows. Straight dancing.

I went on a 'date' with a customer for $110 an hour and didn't even have to check my makeup. At 5am when I finally did, I still didn't know why I did it.

I would highly recommend Bobbi Brown. I've been using their foundation and concealer for the past four years now. Their concealer is great for covering blemishes and under eye circles.

I am a makeup junkie, and I've used Vincent Longo foundation, Bare Minerals, Prescriptives, etc. etc., all the high end stuff. Honestly, my *favorite* stuff now is a crayon type concealer by Neutrogena that you buy in the drug store, and powder foundation by Southern Magnolia Minerals, which is like Bare Minerals but better. I'd describe my skin as similar to the OP.

Many others here hate it, but I'm a massive MAC studio fix fan. My skin just loves it, I barely have to use any, it has great staying power and it lasts forever.

I dont strip anymore, so I can't attest to how Bare Minerals holds up at work, but I know that even if you HAVE to reapply it, its a whole lot easier than liquid foundation. Besides, if you rub your face on a custy accidentally they won't have goop on them from where you're sweating it off.

This is what I currently use and I'm pretty happy with it, too, but I am always interested in experimenting with new makeup...especially foundations and powders.

There is a really awesome makeup review site, www.makeupalley.com. You have to sign in, like SW, but it has an intensive product review section. Now, I won't spend money on skin care or makeup until I find the product on this site and get an idea of what the reviews are. Of course, with makeup, what works for one may not for another, but I find the site extremely helpful. I've wasted a lot of money on products that everyone seems to love (Bare Minerals makeup, for one, people rave about but I'd rather wear nothing at all than that!)

I think the best concealer I've found is Lancome's concealer in a tube. It's waterproof and a nice consistency. I don't like the foundations or powders of theirs, but buy their concealer. Makeup Forever is more like stage makeup. It's good stuff, but wonder about it for you since you're used to minimal makeup.

Ask for a sample of what you are purchasing. I've learned to do this, then if I don't like it, I can return it unused and not feel guilty. As long as you are buying something, the makeup people don't look at you like you're only trying for freebies!

For the most part, yes. Its not going to last as long as Dior Forever (which has ridiculous staying power) or other foundations meant to never wear off, but I like it better because I don't break out and it looks superbly natural. I set it with the powder but typically I will touch up my nose and chin area quickly with Bobbi Brown's foundation stick (which I love because its fast) after I've been on stage or sweating a lot. It still stays better than any non-waterproof or regular foundations.

I'm tied between Dior and LM on this for the most part. LM wins out personally for me just because the porcelain looks more natural on me than Dior's lightest 10 shade which is a little dark, so I can wear it places besides the club. LM feels better on my skin too and doesn't cause me to break out as much.

I'd suggest going to a Sephora if possible and just asking for a sample of each to try for a few days. I do this any time I try a new foundation because sometimes brands (i.e. Smashbox) don't have a light enough shade for me regardless of what the sales associate says. I like to see how it looks in different lighting too first.

I like Clinique loose powder - I mix it with Physician's Formula loose mineral powder.

Just tried it out today, and omg I'm in love. Prescriptives is going out the door. I used this for a long time, but my god bare minerals is da bomb!
