Is baking bread hard?
^^^Not once you get the hang of it. Dissolve sugar in warm water. Add yeast. Let proof for 10 minutes or until the surface of the water is covered in bubbly stuff. Mix in flour, salt, and oil. Knead bread. Turn into oiled bowl, cover with damp towel, let rise in warm place an hour or until doubled. Punch down. Divide into loaf pans or shapes. Cover with damp towel. Let rise 30 minutes or until doubled. Bake until loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. Let cool completely before cutting (an electric knife works great).
That's pretty much it. It takes awhile because of the rising time, but it's not difficult.

I think I'm gonna try it! I love nice fluffy bread with butter. One of my favorite meals honestly is bread and water lol.

Keep in mind that wheat / bread prices are only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Similar price increases have already hit all other grains and most other agricultural products. The higher cost of 'ingredients' has now translated into severely reduced profits for processed grain companies (breads, cereals, cookies) etc. which has forced them to pass on large price increases. Higher grain prices have also hit downstream food processors i.e. meats / poultry / eggs / milk forcing them to pass on large price increases as well. As a result, a 'second wave' of price increases is now being floated by all restaurants and by all processed food companies.
Add to those current food price increase pressures to the fact that ethanol / biofuel demands for corn / canola etc. has drawn down worldwide stockpiles of food to record low levels. Also add to those current food price increase pressures the fact that more and more productive farm acres are being devoted to crops destined for ethanol / biofuel refineries rather than grocery store shelves. And on top of all that, add in a falling US dollar ... which makes bids for grains / foods by China and other foreign countries appear even higher in terms of US dollar denominated prices. It would not surprise me at all to see a real rate of food price inflation on the order of 25% this year.
I'll share something with you. Just this afternoon I decided that the impending high cost of supermarket foods, and the possibility of outright shortages of certain foods, justified the purchase of a 'hobby' greenhouse ! I plan on trying to grow essentially all of the vegetables that I can this summer ... with enough left over to preserve / can / freeze for next winter ... and even more left over to share with neighbors and family members.
Even though I often bake my own pies and pastries from scratch, I usually don't do this for bread ... mostly because the energy cost required to bake the bread at home winds up costing far more than commercially baked bread. However, I recently purchased a new high efficiency gas stove, so the energy cost equation should have changed for the better versus my older electric stove.

Holy sh*t you really DO have it all figured out. I am very jealous.

Yep, Mel rules this stuff.
Btw, I am also going to TRY to grow veggies. Been pretty good w/flowers (from seed) in the past. I went looking for bedding plants, (damn nursery site nearby SAID they had 'em), but they didn't![]()

Time for the masses to discover that wheat is only one of a bazillion possible flour choices. Yay!
My favourites flours are (depending on product being made):
-Brown Rice
-Almond (oh yes. It's yummy)
-Millet
For heavy stuff, Buckwheat and Rye
As a filler for flavoured stuff, spelt
The BEST cake I ever had was made of 100% poppyseed flour. omggood

Poppyseed really? I've never considered that for baking....ever. Do you by chance have a good recipe for a cake using it? I'm very much intrigued and want to try it.
There really are a ton of more choices besides wheat but won't the prices soon, if not already, be rising on those?
^ I have no idea, really. I assume there's a correlation, but
I actually went to try to find the recipe for the cake after i posted...it was made by my ex's grandma in Salzburg. I was searching Austrian poppyseed chocolate cake, and found one, but it doesn't look right. So...no, I don't have a recipe, but it's Austrian (or maybe German), if that helps.![]()

That actually really helps. My family is German and my dad owns a crap load of cookbooks he bought there. If its a German recipe its bound to be in one of them. Some relative has to have heard of it. I'll ask around.

I really want my own greenhouse.

now that these new greenhouses are made out of plastic, they are MUCH more affordable than the old glass ones !!! In the smaller one or two people sizes, your talking about hundreds of dollars not thousands. Check out
In all seriousness, I looked at the amount of money I typically spent through the winter months on things like lettuce + tomatoes + squash + beans + peas etc., and it appears that I'll actually save enough money by growing my own vegetables for an extra 3 months a year to eventually offset the cost of buying the greenhouse in the first place. This is certainly not a 'stunning' return on investment, but since I love gardening anyhow it helps me to rationalize my purchase LOL !
^ooh! Oh man, do I EVER want some land! I want it like other girls want babies!
