    Default Oily Skin-Is Simpler Better?

Zinaida's thread got me thinking....is a simple skin care regimen better?

I spent a good 20 minutes looking at the skin care section of Walgreen's yesterday. Most of the ingredients seemed to be the same....the active ingredient was no different in the stress control formula than the regular acne fighting formulas.

St. Ives had an interesting Olive wash, but it looked no different than the Walgreen's brand Oil Free face wash. I realized I'm probably being swayed by pretty packaging, so I picked up the $4.99 generic over St. Ives' $7.99 wash. I figured simpler might be better?

I am constantly struggling with my face. Most of the time it feel like an oil slick, and in the winter it's a strange mix of oily and flaking. Lately I have been super lazy and breaking out way less.

Coincidence? May I please hear opinions from other super oily/combo skinned girls?

I have the exact same kind of skin.

Once I started using only a wet washcloth, I realized that my skin was only breaking out where I was using my foundation and that I don't break out on the oiliest parts of my face. I haven't worn any foundation in over a week and my skin looks better than it has for a long long while.

Everyone's skin and heredity is different, different things work for different people but this has really been helping my situation.

Don't use anything for acne if you don't have acne (I don't even recommend it if you have acne lol). It will only make your skin produce more oil! It is not good in the long run.

Agh, I wish I could go without foundation!I always look red and uneven. Especially this week when I'm really tired; I use CG's Advanced Radiance foundation and it makes my face look brighter.

And I picked up just plain jane Oil Free wash. Hope it helps.

I agree with Zinaida on not using anything that says its for 'acne.' Everything I have ever tried that has been for acne has never worked. My skin completely changed when I went to using basic products for washing my skin: baking soda, olive oil, ACV, honey and tea tree oil. Its been great! Simple can be better!

Trust me, I do too lol. Me walking around with no foundation is not the prettiest picture! I have some scarring from breakouts (luckily it looks like windburn...) and permanent dark circles. I used to be really red in the area around my nose but that was from using all of those acne creams and drying it completely out. It's been healing pretty good.

My nose is constantly the reddest thing on my face. It doesn't help that it's big either.

We had our discussions about our noses lol! Is your nose itself red or the area around it?

It's funny, because my nose, the parts of my face on the sides of my nose, and my forehead are the oiliest parts of my face by far and yet those parts never have pimples on them now. They never were prone to breakouts, I'd have to sleep with a ton of makeup on there to get 'em to break out. But the dry/normal parts of my skin is where I'll break out. Hmmm...

Both, the nose and the area around it. This year it seems like my chin and cheeks are the worst breakout places.

Did you put a lot of harsh/anti-acne creams or use harsh cleansers on your nose particularly? That was what happened to me. When I was getting a facial the Instructrice was shocked by how much dry skin I had created around my nose from all of those drying products. My nose used to look really raw and red around the bottom, now it looks normal, I only notice redness (scarring?) when I look for it. Try to exfoliate it.

Me too, and that's where I produce hardly any oil. So I can't say that oil is the culprit anymore...

What do you call your skin? Because I have an oil factory on my face, but like I said, sometimes it's super oily AND peeling. Like how the fuck do you classify that? I always think your skin goes through cycles and isn't both extremes at once with combo skin.

    And WTF is normal skin??

Where is your skin oily? And is it constantly shiny or only at certain times of day/night?

I guess you do have the oily skin type. Not normal/combination, which is what I believe I have. If you produce oil all over your face and always look 'sweaty' or 'shiny' I'd call you: Oily. If you're peeling it may very well be because the products you were using have dried your face, or you're just combination/oily, or it's the weather. So many 'or's lol!

Do you get a lot of pimples?

I used to get more, it's gotten better with age. I think the pimples are caused by hormones, like when i have my period, and high stress, which I have right now.

I think you're right about the dryness and weather.

It's always been this way sadly with the oil.

A lot of times, hot weather and humid weather can aggrivate oily skin, over-exposure to the sun and insufficient protection against it can aggrivate oily skin too. I have never been to Arizona, I doubt it's humid but I imagine it gets hot enough. ?

What kind of cleanser is it exaclty that you're using? Is it a foaming face wash or a bar or what kind? Is it an alkaline soap or alcohol-based?

AZ is dry and hot; sweating doesn't help the oil, and the cold we do get is very drying.

The cleanser just says "Gentle Oil Free Wash". It's Walgreen's generic.

Crap I had the first one and its ingredients all figured out. I don't know about the second one, except for that it looks harsh lol! But I don't know for certian, try it for a while I guess. The first one didn't seem too bad.

It sucks because I know what I would have told you to do a few months ago from my makeup/skin care-selling days lol, but now that my alternate methods are working for me I'm so confused!!

How does it look harsh?? I almost got the first one, but didn't like the idea about leaving a 'film' on my face like it said to do.
