    Default dental work nightmare

ok so i went to the dentist today. totally inspired by audreyleigh's post. thinking didnt want to wait any longer since i have already waited so long as it is.

well to put it short he said i will probably need over 30,000 in work done.

First off let me say me and my father have the worse teeth and the dentist said that me being born in india meant i didnt get the floride the first 4 years i was there.
I need i think he said like at least 8 or more extractions 2 which are in the front.
surgery for my underbite. (not doing this at all)
will need crowns for other teeth depending on if he can save them if not
i am looking at several implants.

yes i never smile because my teeth are horrible and it saddens me because that was something i loved to do and always got complimented on. Havent smiled for with teeth showing for over 5 years. yah i know shame on me i should of went sooner but i cant go into reasons of why i procrastinated.

well i am debating going to costa rica or some other place that people i know have gotten implant work done.

you know the worse part is my uncle is a dentist but i cant go to him because i hate his wife. I know self preservation first but dam she is a bitch.

so applied for credit care and got denied. i told the dentist i will pay as i go cause it will only get worse.

any suggestions recommendations are welcomed i am from the new england area so if you happen to know trust worthy dentist or cosmetic surgeons let me know.

If I had to pay that much money on dental work, personally i'd get it done in another country. Maybe look into that? It def. beats 30 Gs.

I feel your pain...but if you are near a medical school for dentistry, you can get work done there for cheaper than what he is saying. It will be done by students in thier final years of dentistry school but they are qualified in what they do. I had my braces...which cost only 2000 and I didnt have to pay to go back for the usual upkeep that most people do. So the 2000 covered, bands popping, brackets breaking and things like that. Also, they have payment plans as well which Im sure are more affordable.

Unless your uncle's wife is evil (molested your kids or something)c go to your uncle. Dental work is expensive, and if you have a dentist in the family, swallow your pride, put your differences aside, and get it taken care of.

Lots of people got to Mexico for dental work, but you aren't really close enough to do that.

i think maybe you should go for another consultation with a different dentist too, just to make sure all of the work is totally necessary. also, remember things like crowns and veneers aren't indestructable and you may need to keep even more money aside for damage/redo.

i understand your pain though. i am spending equivalent of $10,000 on my teeth and it could have been double if i did ALL the work my dentist suggested.
i figure it will be worth it.
if my uncle was a dentist though.... i am jealous. maybe just have a chat with him about it?

I think you should get another opinion. Be sure to go to a dentist that has his/her own office instead of one of those dental clinic places. Do the treatments that preserve your teeth first, then worry about the cosmetic stuff.

I've had a few crowns and they cost about $1200 each. Does he have to crown all of your teeth?

If you really can't afford it, try to find some dental schools. You can get treatment there and save a lot of money.

I just had my first evar root canal today. If you can get dental insurance of any kind, even the cheapest/shadiest will help you at least a bit.

I have fairly decent insurance. My RC would have cost me $750, but with the insurance, it ran me $150 plus another $15 for antibiotics to heal.

Trust me, it's not fun, but it was less traumatic than I thought. Going the dental school route helps. I did that last year for a cleaning because they were experimenting w. iv's to put people out. Not only was it free, but I got a gift certificate to a posh store and got some awesome boots just for participating.

But seriously, a dental school is not a bad idea if you can't get insurance.

I know dental work is costly but I wouldn't go to Costa Rica or do anything trying to find a cheaper way.

UM this estimate was probably padded out. I have managed to age out some of the warnings I was given as a teen about my freakish teeth (my molars are just fine despite warnings of early decay due to crowding, Thankyouverymuch.)

& I was pleasantly surprised by my last check-up- there was less wrong with my teeth than I expected.

Get 2, 3, 4 opinions..........Keep in mind the markups on dental work in the U.S..HUGE

I was going to suggest trying dental schools as well, as Corey and NickT did.

What a drag, though, in general - good luck with that!!!

Definitely get a second opinion. Dentists are like mechanics; a lot of them will try to pad the bill if they can get away with it, by telling you that you need unnecessary work. Go to a dental school. They'll be much cheaper AND they'll be honest with you.

I know how you feel though, bad teeth can make you feel so hideous even when the rest of you is beautiful. I also inherited my father's dental nightmares and I'm in and out of the dentist's chair so much I can sleep in it, but fixing and bleaching my teeth was the best thing I ever did. So don't worry, it's all worth it in the end!

In some cities there are also aid programs for people who have dental emergencies (the catch is a long waiting list and you can't choose your dentist.) Contact the local community hospital or human services agency.

I've spent thousands on my teeth but I don't regret it- "you only get one permanent set."

thank you all so much i am looking into all the different suggestions. I made up my mind to get them fixed because i hate not smiling that much.....lol......and i have had too many people tell me they think i am stuck up because of it.

I talked to my uncle and he will help me by making sure i need the work i am going to get done. So thats a plus.

I should have said this earlier but i am also trying to work with dentist that do laser instead of drill....i hate and fear drills so much with noviccane or the gas they use. A friend of mine who is the same way had fillings done using a laser to remove the cavities. I know the fear of it all is why i let my teeth get so bad.

If your teeth are THAT bad, you should move to the nearest largest city with a dental college and low-income medical assistance and use both to fix this issue. Dental decay can cause serious health problems.

It's too bad you're scared of drills...Just buck up and handle this business. It's very very important.

First you said youre not fixing the underbite - good idea. I decided not to fix the crossbite. This surgery will not be covered by medical or dental insurance.

Dont look at the entire $30K and freak. Have then break everything down into small parts and just go - do it.

On a side note: deep cavities like you have cannot be removed with a laser... its smaller surface cavities - youre going to need root canals. If you really have this fear Id talk to the dentist about being put to sleep.

And avoid the low-income medical assistance (sorry Maxine) but thats what caused my dental nightmare. OR use that just for smaller things like small cavities and extractions. They will not cover crowns, implants, surgery, etc.

Speaking of dental nightmares (again) I realized I had an appointment with my oral surgeon this afternoon. Guess Im getting 4 more teeth pulled in the next few weeks. He wants to put me to sleep altho my other surgeon pulled 3 and left me totally awake. $1,080 for the extractions ($2,060 before insurance - $500 of that for anaesthetia)

With dental insurance theres usually a yearly maximum. Mine is $1,000 so its all being used with one dental appointment....oh wait, i'll have a couple bucks leftover. Woohoo.

Make a plan and get it done hun. It'll be hell but when its all over in a couple years youll be so grateful.

Im honestly debating on going to out of the counrty for my implants and crowns - that alone is $25,000. Veneers and extractions Im having done here in the states.

    (1) Get a second opinion -- make sure this is not just the dentist trying to extort you. This happens sometimes. It's happened to people I know.

    (2) If you need all the work: I can recommend Nanjing, China for dental tourism! I went to a dentist at the SOS clinic / former Nanjing Hilton (I don't remember what the hotel is called now) and he was great. Sharp as a tack. Explained everything as he went, and all. I thought I had cavities; turned out just to have gum problems and need a teeth cleaning. I was impressed enough that I told him if I ever need serious dental work, I'll probably fly to Nanjing to have it done. Professional modern standards, very hygienic office, and the tiniest X-ray camera in the world (literally -- it's this weird handheld thing! You hold the film in your mouth and it takes a tiny picture of just the teeth you need photographed! It's awesome.) He has pictures on his wall of clients from all over the world.

    http://www.uniondental.cn/index2.htm

The phone line supposedly to an English speaker doesn't work, but if you send something to the email address it should get there.

There's another one in Nanjing also that a Canadian company books "dental vacations" out to. Look up dental tourism and you'll find the website. They'll sell you the dental work + a relaxing tour for about a quarter the cost of what the dental work would cost in North America. I don't know the clinic they go through. Chinese *hospitals* usually suck, but I've heard lots of good reports backing up the high quality of dental care in big cities, esp. Nanjing. I think they have a highly regarded dental school there.

Edit, here's the Canadian dental tourism agency: http://www.incidentaltourist.com/

    Good luck!

Research before you talk about it.

I know several people who have successfully gone to Costa Rica and had dental work done and their teeth are phenomenal and comparable to the work done here in the states.

I don't believe in U.S. dentistry. Seriously it is SUCH a scam. I would NEVER pay 30k or 10k or honestly anything to a dentist. I had the nurse (or whatever they're called) tell me I had serious gingivitis and that I need teeth pulled (I've never had any pain or anything) and then the real dentist came in and said my teeth look fantastic, that it's really rare the see someone so old having had and needing no work done. Then the nurse told me I need extensive cleaning and I refused and she still tried to charge me for it and I refused to give them my card and walked out. It's bull shit.

Ive had similar experiences at several different places. Seriously, let your uncle see what all you really need and then I'd say go aboard and have it done. Don;t give these people the satisfaction.

Im with you. After researching many dentists overseas, I am 100% convinced that unless Im getting something minute (like a cleaning) done, I will not let another dentist in the states touch my teeth (especially on a cosmetic basis) bc they are overpriced. I understand that its about making money but when I compare US prices to prices in another countries, its a HUGE difference. Not a slight difference, not a "bit" of a difference but a marginal difference. Why? Its all about money....
