Default Random Racist Moment of the Day

I live in an area that is considered "ghetto"--mostly only because there are real life actual black people here. Lots of them! It's not the worst area in the world and people in real cities would probably get a kick if knew people here called it the ghetto.

I was just at the Aldi in my neigborhood and as I walked out there was a group of like 3 or 4 black guys returning a cart. They were cutting up and being silly and generally having fun.

I walked out at the same time as this well-dressed old white lady who was clutching her purse and trying to avoid eye contact with them. As we neared our cars she looked at me with that "look" that other white people give you when they're about to say something racist and said, "It's dangerous coming down here, isn't it."

I said, "They're more scared of you than you are of them."

This happens to me a lot. I look like a safe place for white people whose hate has grown so great that they have to spew it out to a fellow whitey. Why? WHY?

That's so annoying! I wish people wouldn't assume you're in their little racist clique just because you're their approximate skin color.

^^No shit! I think the next time I'll quickly adopt their conspiratorial tone, look both ways and whisper, "You know, I *am* white, but I'm not a racist so peddle that shit elsewhere."

Wow. Where you live is so nice and expensive looking, I'd have never thought anyone could call it ghetto.

It goes both ways though. I went to the mall after dark. I was by myself and walking from my car to the entrance. Two young black guys yelled at me from a bit of a distance, it was the "het what's up" type of thing. I kept on walking. Then they started yelling that I wouldn't talk to them because they were black. I turned around and yelled at them that I wouldn't talk to them because I was a single women walking in a parking lot by herself, not because they were black. I wouldn't have taked to anybody in that situation.

i love my landlords and hated my former neighbors, but...

the girl who used to live downstairs had a black bf and a lot of other black dudes who came over. these dudes were shitty, shifty guys, and she was a shitty bitch. it wasn't a race thing. but my landlords would make some obviously racist comments about her and her friends.

having quite a few black friends who weren't trash like that, i kinda took it personally.

    seriously!

i ignore pretty much all guys who pull that shit. and the only time i don't is to tell them off (in a pretty hood voice no less). it's not my fault that when i find myself in mostly black areas, there aren't any white guys around to yell at me. if anything, i think that says something about how non-racist i am to even be there.

i especially love it when they're too old for me and/or really trashy and/or PROPOSITIONING ME! really? they think their race bothers me more than the fact that they're asking me to have sex with them for money or drugs? really?

I'm in Europe. I must be hard to live in a societuy where the crimerate is 10 times higher. I would be scared to death.

Being accused being a racist ... That would be my least problem !!!

    Better safe than sorry !!!

I can't excuse that gal's comments, but other than that her fear is something a lot of us who aren't acquainted to being around groups of young black men can relate to. I think a combination of unfamiliarity and negative portrayals in the media have put that notion in a lot of people's heads.

The thing is, I only feel that irrational fear when theres a group of young black men, or just me in a large group of black people.

Change that single group of young black men to:

    1. Black women
    2. Old black men
    3. A black couple
    4. Black family going to church

...and for whatever reason that fear isn't there. You could make this same generalization in fact about Latinos and Asians as well.

Similarly, there is some fear with a similar group of young white men that have a rough, counterculture look to them.

Yeah, groups of rowdy young men frighten me regardless of race. They get that pack mentality going and they're like dogs, there's no telling what they'll do. One of them starts something and then they all start trying to impress each other, and things just escalate, and people get hurt.

Outside of work, I always walk away from and avoid groups of men. So I don't blame her, I would've acted the same way. Maybe she's had some bad experiences before, who knows.

I would agree. It's smart to avoid groups of young men drinking. There is a distinct lack of self control and a tendency to darwinism. This older lady doesn't have a healthy attititude. She is probably more likely to get her purse stolen by a white tweaker. Seen both sides of it.

Seen an old white lady definitely id a crime perp to the police as a young black man across the street. Problem was I was standing next to her at the bus stop and saw the criminal run the other way into an alley.

Saw an old white lady having a hard slow time crossing a street. A young black man came up and helped her with her packages and to avoid the traffic. No one else would help her.

LOL, this is exactly how people in my hometown (Colorado) feel about a certain neighborhood near where I grew up. I laughed at them then and i laugh at them now, especially now since I've moved to the murder capital of th country...
i used to dream militant dreams / of taking over america / to show these white folks how it should be done
i used to dream radical dreams / of blowing everyone away / with my perceptive powers of correct analysis
i even used to think / id be the one to stop the riot and negotiate the peace / then i awoke and dug
that if i dreamed natural dreams / of being a natural woman
doing what a woman does / when shes natural
    i would have a revolution

Heh. That is how some people that I know react about a certain suburb that I used to live in. It is mostly black (about 60%) but people outside of it speak of it in hushed whispers like "oh no, don't go there". This suburb is actually more affluent and has a much lower crime rate (there has only been one murder and that was over 30 years ago, it was a domestic crime with a white guy who killed his wife) than many of the near by "whiter" suburbs but people still freak out.

I used to work as a vet-tech there and one of the female vets was extremely suburban (I think she grew up in a town with absolutely no black people) and was scared like hell of any black guy, even obviously well dressed, non-threatening black guys. When it came to a point that I knew I was going to be a stripper and I had no intentions of working there any longer I calmly told her "You know, not every black man you see wants to rape you." All the other vets and vet-techs laughed their asses off.

People always say dumb shit like that, lol. What's hilarious to me is when a White guy calls me a racist because I won't stop and talk to them. Its like c'mon dude, I could care less about your race, but you're a 5' 3" aggressive little prick.

Is it racist for me to say its always the Italian dudes who do that shit?, lol

Dunno, I'm scared of a pack of men regardless of race. I don't feel anymore comfortable because we have the same skin tone at all.

Nah, I hafta contradict myself a smidge..I'm terrified of young White dudes in trench coats!

I was thinking of this thread last night. One of hubbys co-workers(we'll call him P) and his wife(we'll call her M) picked me up at the house to go to see Wicked. M made several racist comments(like when P asked what route she was taking to the theater, she said "well..I dont want to go through bad black town"). Usually I'd spout off and put someone like that in their place, but being hubbys co-worker's wife I held my tounge. Even though I know hubby would have agreed with me and supported me speaking out..I didnt want to cause tension and be the bitch-wife who tore M(know through the office as "the SWEETEST girl")a new one.

Otherwise, she was very sweet...but I couldnt get past those comments to be able to really like her. And she made a FEW of those comments....we had to drive through a ghetto-y area to get there, she was acting like swarms of rouge black people were going to storm the car at every light. WTF??? The webcam studio I work for is in that area and I drive through it all the time. Never ONCE have I had any problem. It isnt like the area is famous for gunfights or carjackings or anything. Its just a poor area.

If you feel that way,fine(well..not FINE,but whatever)...keep it to yourself. Why assume its ok to spout extremely racist comments to a virtual stranger. Was I supposed to automatically agree just because I'm white too??
