How to SERIOUSLY mess with a telemarketer

First of all I want to say hello to all members (Old & New)! It's been a while since I've logged on. Now that I've FINALLY got a new laptop and have internet access I'll be able to catch up on alot of things. Including the happenings and going on's with S.W.

    With that said....

I was surfing you tube and came across this and I just had to share it. If it has already been posted, my apologies to all.

    Welcome back!

I've heard that particular bit before, and it is funny every time. I get phone solicitors all the time. Usually I just hang up before they can even get 5 words out, but occasionally I mess with them.

Just yesterday I got a call from a credit card company and I acted like they were calling me to book some party strippers. That was funny when the lady on the other end of the phone got all offended that I was offering her a two girl dildo show for $600.

Promote yourself and earn more money! This is a business that is owned by strippers for strippers. Let's make that money!

That's awesome! I would so love to do that. I just got a new number which apparently was never added to the 'do not call' list and telemarketers have been driving me batshit crazy these past few days.

If you really want to piss them off... say "What? I can't hear you" over and over. Or variations like "Sorry, please say it again" and "One more time please" ... guaranteed to make them insane.

I havn't listened to it, but I have a gripe for all who think its so cool to mess with telemarketers:

    1. They tend to be unskilled people on the other line that need a job and are trying to make a living.

    2. If your phone is listed, google up "Do Not Call List" and get on the national list.

    3. If a telemarketer still calls you, their company will be fined for calling. Telemarketers are required to keep their leads updated this way.

    4. If they still call and you havn't gotten on the DNC Registry, simply ask them to take you off their list, they are legally obligated to do so.

    5. If you've completed all above steps and they are still harrassing you, then go ahead and fuck with them.

I don't know if this is happening in the US as well but most of the time when we get telemarketer calls it's a computer recording. So basically, you can't even tell them to fuck off because all you get is a computer. I wish they'd instigate a DNC list in Canada.

every time the guy calls to try and sell the sunday paper my SO tells him that he cant read.

They are always like "omg, i am so sorry." One time some guy said back to him that he sounds like a fairly intelligent person and literate! Witty!

Personally I feel that the do-not-call list was implemented backwards, and that the law should have been that telemarketers may not call unless people first give their permission.

See I accept advertising on free (over the air) television and radio because the premise is that the entertainment is free, paid for via advertising. I knew that before I bought a TV or Radio. In the good old days we used rabbit ears, or antennas, but we also had the option to buy cable service, the notion being basic service provides better reception, nothing more, for a nominal fee. Anything else I pay for is my choice, and consists of some combination of entertainment (a benefit to me) and advertising (a benefit to the advertisers). I also accept advertising in other venues where I get some benefit in exchange, but...

My phone service cost me a monthly fee, and I don't pay that fee with the intent that 3rd party companies advertise to me. In fact the phone company does not advertise to me. They take my money, provide me a service, and we are even. But the telemarketers are other companies, using the service that me and my phone company have made a deal about, without asking me if it's okay.

The thing is, the telemarketers aren't giving me any benefit. TV and Radio are a simple exchange of a benefit to me (entertainment to me) in exchange for a benefit to the advertisers. But the advertisers using my phone, the one I paid for, give me nothing but advertising. I didn't opt in like I did when I chose to watch TV and listen to the Radio. In fact, I think they should pay me a reasonable fee for using my phone line, the one I'm pay for, say 20 cents a minute, rather then making me foot the bill for providing a means to reach me with their products messages.

By the way, the situation is analogous to SPAM, where we pay for our email, and the bandwidth, and other companies who never asked us first, use it without asking permission, and let others foot the majority of the bill.

So yea, it is their job, and I feel some pity for the people doing it, but I think telemarketing companies need to strongly hear the message, whether we opt out or not, we who pay for our phones almost universally HATE them calling us. Since they don't give a damn that it invades our privacy, and since they put the burden on us to opt out, I only partially feel for them .

I just wait until I know for sure it's a telemarketer, where either they start their spiel or the computerized message kicks in. If it's a computerized message, I just hang up. If it's a person, I say, "Thank you, I'm not interested," and hang up. I rarely get calls back, at least.
