to lose weight?? I hate the treadmill/elliptical machines. They unmotivate me to work out. Can't I just do free weights and ab workouts and lose the weight???

I think the key to weight loss is still cardio. If you're dancing - that might do it but you should probably throw in some extra cardiovascular work outs to aid in weight loss instead of just toning/muscle building.

Its a lot easier and faster to loose weight if you do cardio. Its also healthier for you to do cardio.

The treadmill is best for cardio. But if you find another machine or activity to get your heart rate up the same way, then it should work fine too.

well that too. But I was talking about the step machine, it should be next to the ellipticals and treadmills.

what about a spin class or a step class? or a boot camp class even? more motivation to get moving, know what I mean?

How about getting a skipping rope and skipping, that can really get your heart rate up, theres also swimming which burns lots of calories.

the best way to lose weight is to eat well, do cardio AND strength workouts. if you did 1000 crunches a day but no cardio, you'll get great abs. they'll just be hidden under a layer of fat.

If you did the type of resistance training I do, you will burn just as many calories as you do with cardio AND build lean muscle mass. Of course its also important to have a balanced diety and to stay physically active as much as you can. But I don't think you need to do an hour of treadmill a day to achieve significant results. Everything helps though!

If you add an aerobic component to your weight training (ie, keep your heart rate up, don't just sit there and push on dumbells) you will see great results.

    I'm not huge on cardio.

Do it still, but bump up the intensity. I typically og about 5 mins on a level 1.0 incline, and then I run for 10 on a 2 or 3 level incline. Or just go on the stationary bike and do a hill workout for 10 mins. Set your resistance between 7 and 12 depending on your fitness level. After that, just go work on weights.

    Work hard = faster results.

Orrr, you could do a cardio circuit! This is my fave. Do like 2 or 3 songs (assuming you bring an MP3 player or something to workout with) on 3 or 4 machines! Go hard. You should be sweating heavily. start with treadmill, then I bike, then I use the elliptical, and finally I use the stair machine. That way it's not stupid and boring like cardio usually feels.

But actually yes you can lose weight just by doing weights, depending on what you eat and on your metabolism.

lol QFT great minds think alike. And another thing: NO WALKING ON THE TREADMILL!! Unless you are old or significantly overweight, don't ever do this!! Unless you're warming up or cooling down. If you have joint probs, go use the elliptical.

oooh i forgot about this. the lady from biggest loser, jillian, has this program called the 30 day shred. ive done the workout twice and its hard for me. you do 3 minutes of strength exercises, and theyre HARD. you work your arms and legs at the same time. then 2 mins cardio, then 1 min abs. you repeat that cycle 3 times with different exercises, and it goes by fast because you dont have to do anything for more than 30 seconds (the exercises repeat in each individual cycle) and because it's broken up like that.

That's what they do at Curves Studios.

^ i dont know how well it works, but it's good for somebody who gets bored easily like me! i *hate* repetitive workouts and doing the same thing for a long period of time. and when you hate it, you dont do it.

The issue is in trying to time yourself to some arbitrary standard rather than focusing on form, strengh, stamina, and exhausting the muscle within 10-15 reps. You can to go quickly but maintain form.

I did a total body resistance workout today that kicked my ass and wasn't boring. I hurt now and am ravenously hungry. That's actually a good thing, means I burned a lot of calories. Let's see if I can remember it.

my problem is that even if its kicking my ass, i get bored VERY easily. i think thats why i do yoga, because you go through different poses and you arent just doing one pose for 20 minutes, you know? like, running.. hell no. 5 minutes and im like ok no more, that had to be long enough.

Spinning really helped me with weight loss. I think over two months of doing that and yoga every other day, with a small change in my diet, i lost about 15 pounds. I was a weirdo spinning addict for awhile :-s.
