Default I need home repair help.

Whenever I flush my toilet lately it rarely takes the paper down. When I go # 2 it always takes that down, but it takes a whole nother flush to take the paper. Even when I go # 1 it doesn't usually take the paper. I already switched to 1 ply hoping that would help. What can I do? It's embarrassing when I have guests over.

Maybe raise the balloon or whatever device you have to increase the amount of the water in the tank.

Maybe that's it. I had a problem several months ago with the water from the tank part coming out of the side of the toilet top bc the little hose part came out of place. I stuck that part into that little tower thing to fix that problem. I guess it could be realted.

Here's what I do: fill a bucket w/water, pour in toliet bowl. It should make it flush. I do this regularly, it seems to keep the drain clear. I also sometimes flush toliet with nothing in it, for the same reason. I've been doing this, ever since I've had an overflowing bowl, years ago.

Your toilet should have a water level mark inside of it to show you proper water level.Depending on what kind of fill device you have (fluidmaster or Ballcock)it should be adjustable. The Ballcock has a big ball on the end of a brass rod, you can adjust by bending the brass rod slightly(upward to raise level). The fluidmaster does not have a ball at the end and is usually adjusted by raising or lowering the whole unit up or down-also can be done from the top but these are a bit tricky if you have never done. Also your flapper ball which is the thinge that lets the water into the bowl when you flush, should have just a little slack in it-about 1/2 to3/4 inch.If I lived closer I could fix it for you sorry.

Sounds like the water tank isn't filling completely. Is it a low flow toilet? You may just have to have an extra flush every now and again if it is low flow.

Otherwise check to make sure the water level is where it needs to be in the tank. If it is too low, you may need a longer overflow tube or raise the level of the float ball.

Also check to make sure that the chain (that is attached to the outside flush handle) is properly connected and has no slack in it when the flapper is closed (the "plug" that controls water flow). If the chain has slack it could be catching under the flapper, causing the water to leak out and not allowing the tank to fill completely.

Toilets are pretty simple devices. If you've checked these things and it still isn't flushing properly, it could be the drainage that is the problem. Does the water fill the bowl before going down or does it drain right away?

If it is a drainage problem, a plumber will be needed. The problem could be anywhere along the sewage line and can only be determined by snaking the pipes. This drainage problem could be as far away as your home's connection to the septic tank and/or city sewer line.

    Good luck!

Don't you just love walking into the plumbing supply and asking about their selection of Ballcocks and nipples?

They sell these snake things (it's s-shaped...bristle brush) for stuff like this. You just push it into the toilet and if there's any clogs, it'll help push it out. If it still keeps doing this after you do this (and the above suggestions) then you'll want to call a plumber as the problem is bigger than you can handle.
