Default Things to do after retiring from stripping?

    Here goes...I'm going to University!

Well, not right away. I have a lot of catching up to do, and I wasn't exactly a stellar student in high school back in...ahem...cough, cough. Well, a while ago.

I have to take classes at community college, and will probably just do my Freshman and Junior years there because of the cost prohibitiveness of University tuition. I don't know if I qualify for any grants or scholarships. I'm going to forgo the student loans and just pay as I go for a while.

The funny thing is that I saw two local strippers on campus when I went to register for Spring term. I was there for only 20 minutes and I spied two of the local area's finest naked ladies pumping up their brain power.

My major chose me. Economics. It is funny that a career as a stripper lead me to an interest into investing that lead me to an interest in larger economic trends that has lead me to seek a career as an economist.

I'll still keep my agency job. Any college success advice would be most appreciated!

    Jus' sharing.

I don't tell people I use to dance. People make judgements based upon what they have seen on television and heard about entertainers. It's not that they are "bad" people for making these judgements it's just that they are ignorant and don't know any better. I would just hate for the news to get to the wrong person especially someone whom I may ask to hire me.

Also, don't procrastinate. I am the world's worse about it. Get on your projects as soon as you find out about them. Don't wait till the last minute and pull "all nighters" and end up half dead the next day.

Get ahead if you can, always read ahead in your text books so you know what to expect next.

Take your vitamins and get your flu shot so you don't get sick. Viruses seem to pass around schools like wildfire. It's hard to get caught up once you get so far behind.

That's all I think of for now.. Congratulations on your decision to go back to school and good luck.

    congrats and good luck!

are you asking what kinds of work as well as college tips?

if it's work, this touches back on a subject i mentioned and i see discussed/lamented very often here. child care for strippers.

obviously, the type (odd hours, overnight, weekly schedule, etc.) of the stripper really doesn't conform to what's usually offered out there. but there's definitely a need and also an ability to pay for such services. both parties would have to understand the unofficial nature of it though.

but as a former stripper you can offer the understanding of the situation without judgement/bs for the simple but critical services being rendered.

actually, i look at it as almost a natural progression of the vocation if you take some other historical examples of roles.

as for college course taking (it's been a while for me *coughcough*), but i would ease back into it first. slowly adjust to the schedules again.

talk with former students for opinions on specific teachers/professors ahead of time. instructor expectations or even buying old notes would be invaluable. the network ability with the internet is immeasurably better than the old post and ad in the student center crap. bleh.

    good luck!

Very cool!!! I didn't do college, and I'm just terrified at the thought of going, I think that I am too old, and too lazy and I'd just fuck it all up. But how cool that you are! I will have to rethink my judgement now that the fabulous Paris is heading to school.

Good for you sweetie, I'm excited for you. And great to see your pretty face (at least in an avatar) again .

Cough. Older students tended to do well from what I saw. Some classes it's easier to just read the textbook. Other classes just listen to teacher and remember what he/she says. That's all the school advice I have. Study with other people to make it less boring? Check the textbook price online also and make sure you need textbook for class before buying.

Is this so you can get a degree and look smarter? Seriously, yay! I did my first year at the community college and it was FREE, because (at least in NJ) if you're over 24 you can get good financial aid. You may not qualify if you make too much (I will admit to some fudging), but you might get some oldster scholarships too.

Try to test out of whatever you can, or take the CLEP tests for credit if you have any particular skills already and your school allows it (languages, science, most of the Gen. Ed. subjects have a CLEP). If you can't, realize that about 1 year of your college experience will be devoted to things like Intro to Geology and Spanish 101. That's the thing that frazzled me the most when I started school 3 years back.

Vitamins, lots of water, sleep as much as you can. Sit in the front of any class you can to avoid the talkers/texters. Also to avoid the coughers and germ havers! Generally, avoid cafeteria food. And find out what sort of benefits your school offers:We have free bus/train weeks, free or mostly free healthcare (not great, but good for small things), student passes get discounts in museums and stuff. And DEFINITELY buy/sell your books on Amazon or Half.com, not the bookstore.

Community college is awesome. I'm very glad I went to one for my first two years and then transfered to a pretty good school. They usually are great about helping you transfer.

You actually are likely to qualify for scholarships. Lots of schools like to see adults returning to school because it means they have some life experience under their belt and they really want to be there. The downside is I think private schools are going to be more likely to offer these types. I know for a while Columbia was offering full rides to "untraditional" students. You might not want to transfer there but it definately pays to look around I was in the honors program and a California public community college transfer. I got both an honors scholarship and a scholarship specifically for jc transfer students. More than half my tuition is covered this way

Are you doing it for the knowledge or to get a job? If it's for the knowledge you can audit most of the classes for free, and a lot of professors are happy to explain things to you just because you're interested in learning even if you aren't paying.

You definitely have a good brain for economics!

I am the least qualified person in the world to give career advice. But best of luck to you and may it bring you wealth. :-)

Community colleges are great for all ages. I went to one when I was 14 and had a friend I always worked with in astronomy class who was 50. Many people were in their twenties and thirties.

And I'll agree, sometimes the general education classes bite. Sometimes they don't, but it's a crapshoot and you never know what you'll get (a great, inspiring teacher or a cardboard dummy) until you get there...

I tested out better than I thought I would. I'm in beginning algebra. That surprised me because I always assumed I just sucked at math. Like, in-remedial-classes-my-entire-high-school-career kind of sucked at math. I supposed working in construction got me up to speed?

I'm just going part time over spring and summer, then I'll take a full class load by fall term. I'm going to do my best to balance the classes that are going to be intense with others that are not so tough. I'm sure at some point I'll end up with a course load that will challenge me to the point of tears.

Greenidlady, I'm a total procrastinator! I have an hour between classes to kick around campus. I'll likely use that time to get and stay caught up. Stripping taught me a good work ethic and how to be self motivated.

Amazingkat: It is funny that you should mention Columbia. I have looked at the school because their economics department is one of the best in the nation. I'm afraid that would be getting ahead of myself. For now I'm focused at schools in the Northwest or west coast. But...who knows?

Everyone has such great advice here. I'm pretty nervous and excited about the whole thing. I've cut way, way back on my cannabis usage and will go without entirely during the term (save it for times like spring break).

Holiday: If don't feel like you are ready to go back to school yet, then the time isn't right for you yet. And you know I've got a few years on you! Age doesn't make a difference. My stepdad got his massage therapy degree in December 2006 and he was 71! That's right 71 years old. Now he spends all day giving younger people rub downs at a health club.

I love you guys sooooooooo much! Thanks for the pearls of wisdom. I know it will come in handy. I wonder how long it will be before I post one of these ?

^^ Wooo-algebra! I'm in that too! It's be *cough*15 years since I took an algebra class! Definitely buy those books on Amazon-no need to spend $150 on some crappy hardcover.

Yeah I pretty much can't during school. Makes me too sleepy and snackish. Well, more.

In fact, I'd love to blab more about it but I need to get my ass out the door to work. I'll PM you later with some helpful info. I think the loan & grant process might be easier for you to navigate than most students are able to today.

School is one of those things like stripping: fun, challenging, social, casual dress code, not nine to five... stimulating for the young at heart...

I know a number of people who keep going back to school, just plain addicted to it. I think I'm becoming one of their number.

I know it completely depends on the school and what teachers you get but I haven't had to buy a book so far besides in math. The books I did buy (like a spanish workbook I thought I would need or a literature book I bought but just ended up looking the stories up on the net) I haven't used once...so at least I did buy them off amazon and where way cheaper than buying them from the school.

I always ask the teacher if you really need the book because I'm really strapped for cash. Usually they will tell you either "It would be really hard to pass without one" or "I really suggest getting one but if you take really good notes and study really hard you should be able to at least pull a B".

Ask if they provide PP slides that you can print off and how many test questions are going to be from the book. Obviously if they EVER mention "in you book they brought up the Iran blah blah" then you either write it down and search the net or ask someone who has the book to help you out. Also ask if they have a book on reserve in the library.

You may not care and rather just buy your books, but especially if you have a really short attention span and cant read text books without it being a real pain, you don't have too.

re: books, i don't know if this is every college, but mine had copies of every currently-being-used textbook and workbook stored in the library. for classes where you only need the book a few times, i went to the library, got the book and copied the necessary pages. (very rarely checked the books out though, because i thought someone else might need to look at it too. )

    OK. Advice....

Review your class notes on the same day as the class.
    Rewrite/add to notes as required.
Do not get behind. Only play after you've done all the work.
Try to get into your subject; something there will be interesting and very useful later.
If you do not understand something in class, ask then in class if possible or the instructor as soon as convenient.
If you do not understand something in an out-of-class assignment (homework etc), ask next time in class.
You might get ito a serious study group, but do not spend much time with classmates who are not interested in doing well in the class.

I worked hard in college, if you can tell. Had to...it was durned expensive!

With your major, you can make a hellovalot of money. It would be very good to be well-prepared.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

NOTE: anything I post here, outside of a direct quote, is my opinion only, which I am entitled to. Take it for what you estimate it is worth.

I actually went to community college for two terms in 1990. You are very wise to be socking away money while you are young and dancing. As much as I'd like to think that dancing can be a long term career, it really isn't. Make that money now! Who knows what the future holds for stripping careers?

I quit school because I went for all the wrong reasons. Mainly because everyone around me told me that I must go to school. I had no interest in education then. I HATED high school with a passion, and I still had a bad taste in my mouth three years later. I've gotten over that now.

I just never returned to school due to lack of time and/or money. It was the best decision for me to continue to put off school and to just keep working.

What is that proverb? "When the student is ready the teacher will appear" seems to speak to me, and I fully understand what it means now.

Threlayer, I actually signed up for a class called "effective learning". I'm hoping that class will offer insight to better study habits, note taking, how to read faster and better reading comprehension. I wouldn't have thought to rewrite previously written notes. That is a good way to stay better organized and eliminate paper clutter, I'm sure.

Joplin, I'm probably going to just purchase the books required for the classes. I will try Half.com and amazon.com in an attempt to get the best possible price, and then sell those books right back on those same websites when I'm finished. Have you tried the Kindle Reader? I'd love to know if students find that device useful or not. It is probably still too new of a technology to be very useful to the masses yet.

Thechaosfairy, I call my mom a hobby student because she has always been in school for her whole life. There was a couple of years there in the mid eighties that she didn't attend school but other than that, she's been in some kind of educational program or another.

RoseLeigh, I'm sure I'll be seeking help. I wouldn't have thought to post in LO about school. Art dorks? Love 'em! I used to hang out with theater students when I lived in Missoula. So much fun hanging out with artsy types! It reminds me of working in the clubs.

Still feeling nervous, but excited and hopeful too. This feeling is not unlike a new romance. For the first time in a long time, I'm not totally bored when thinking about the future.

The funny thing is, that's not why I want to study economics. I enjoy the topic and find it extremely fascinating. I read books about economics (shhhhhh, don't tell anyone) for fun.
